Book Illustrations of English Literature

Download or read book Illustrations of English Literature written by Charles Ebenezer Moyse and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-01-08 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Illustrations of English Literature: First Year Course It has very often come into my mind what wise men there formerly were throughout England, belonging both to sacred and secular orders, llld how happy were the times then throughout England; and how the kings who had power over the people in those days obeyed God and his ministers; and how they preserved both their peace and their morals and their rule at home, and also enlarged their country and how they sped both in war and wisdom; and also how eager the ecclesiastical orders were both in teaching and learning, and in all the services they had to perform to God and how wisdom and learning were sought in this land from without, and how we should have to obtain them now front abroad if we had to acquire them. So com pletely had learning fallen away in England that there were very few on this side of Humber who could understand their church services in English, or indeed translate a letter from Latin into English and I think there were not many beyond Humber. So few of them were there that I cannot bethink me of a single one south of the Thames when I came to the throne. God be thanked that we have any supply of teachers now. When I remembered this, then I wondered very, very much at the good and wise men who formerly lived throughout England and had learned all books thoroughly, because they did not desire to translate any part of them into their own tongue. But then I soon answered myself and said, They did not think that men would ever be so careless in teaching, and learning so decayed; of set purpose they neglected to do so, and desired that there might be more wisdom in the land, the more languages we knew. Book The Art of Picturing in Early Modern English Literature

Download or read book The Art of Picturing in Early Modern English Literature written by Camilla Caporicci and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-11-04 with total page 251 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Written by an international group of highly regarded scholars and rooted in the field of intermedial approaches to literary studies, this volume explores the complex aesthetic process of "picturing" in early modern English literature. The essays in this volume offer a comprehensive and varied picture of the relationship between visual and verbal in the early modern period, while also contributing to the understanding of the literary context in which Shakespeare wrote. Using different methodological approaches and taking into account a great variety of texts, including Elizabethan sonnet sequences, metaphysical poetry, famous as well as anonymous plays, and court masques, the book opens new perspectives on the literary modes of "picturing" and on the relationship between this creative act and the tense artistic, religious and political background of early modern Europe. The first section explores different modes of looking at works of art and their relation with technological innovations and religious controversies, while the chapters in the second part highlight the multifaceted connections between European visual arts and English literary production. The third section explores the functions performed by portraits on the page and the stage, delving into the complex question of the relationship between visual and verbal representation. Finally, the chapters in the fourth section re-appraise early modern reflections on the relationship between word and image and on their respective power in light of early-seventeenth-century visual culture, with particular reference to the masque genre.

Book Visual Rhetoric and Early Modern English Literature

Download or read book Visual Rhetoric and Early Modern English Literature written by Katherine Acheson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-12-05 with total page 297 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Early modern printed books are copiously illustrated with charts, diagrams, and other kinds of images that represent systems of thought and ways of doing things. Visual Rhetoric and Early Modern English Literature shows how these images fostered what Elizabeth Eisenstein called brainwork related to concepts of space, truth, art, and nature, and reveals their importance to poetry by Andrew Marvell and John Milton, and Aphra Behn’s Oroonoko. The genres of illustration considered in this book include military strategy and tactics, garden design, instrumentation, Bibles, scientific schema, drawing instruction, natural history, comparative anatomy, and Aesop’s Fables. The argument produces unique insights into the ways in which visual rhetoric affected verbal expression, and the book develops novel methods of using printed images as evidence in the interpretation of the rich, strange, and beautiful literature of early modern England.

Book Serials to Graphic Novels

Download or read book Serials to Graphic Novels written by Catherine J. Golden and published by University Press of Florida. This book was released on 2018-10-01 with total page 353 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Victorian illustrated book came into being, flourished, and evolved during the long nineteenth century. While existing scholarship on Victorian illustrators largely centers on the realist artists of the "Sixties," this volume examines the entire lifetime of the Victorian illustrated book. Catherine Golden offers a new framework for viewing the arc of this vibrant genre, arguing that it arose from and continually built on the creative vision of the caricature-style illustrators of the 1830s. She surveys the fluidity of illustration styles across serial installments, British and American periodicals, adult and children’s literature, and--more recently--graphic novels. Serials to Graphic Novels examines widely recognized illustrated texts, such as The Pickwick Papers, Oliver Twist, Alice in Wonderland, Peter Rabbit, and Trilby. Golden explores factors that contributed to the early popularity of the illustrated book—the growth of commodity culture, a rise in literacy, new printing technologies—and that ultimately created a mass market for illustrated fiction. Golden identifies present-day visual adaptations of the works of Austen, Dickens, and Trollope as well as original Neo-Victorian graphic novels like The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen and Victorian-themed novels like Batman: Noël as the heirs to the Victorian illustrated book. With these adaptations and additions, the Victorian canon has been refashioned and repurposed visually for new generations of readers.

Book excerpt: Early manuscripts in the English language include religious works, plays, romances, poetry and songs, as well as charms, notebooks, science and medieval medicine. How did scribes choose to arrange the words and images on the page in each manuscript? How did they preserve, clarify and illustrate writing in English? What visual guides were given to early readers of English in how to understand or use their books?'Designing English' is an overview of eight centuries of graphic design in manuscripts and inscriptions from the Anglo-Saxon to the early Tudor periods. Working beyond the traditions established for Latin, scribes of English needed to be more inventive, so that each book was an opportunity for redesigning. 'Designing English' focuses on the craft, agency and intentions of scribes, painters and engravers in the practical processes of making pages and artefacts. It weighs up the balance of ingenuity and copying, practicality and imagination in their work. It surveys bilingual books, format, ordinatio, decoration and reading aloud, as well as inscriptions on objects, monuments and buildings. With over ninety illustrations, drawn especially from the holdings of the Bodleian Library in Old English and Middle English, 'Designing English' gives a comprehensive overview of English books and other material texts across the Middle Ages.
