Book excerpt: In Illustrated Genera of Smut Fungi, Third Edition, the world's top authority on the topic, Dr. Kálmán Vánky, uses molecular phylogenetic analyses and extensive collecting activity to bring you a better and expanded classification of smut fungi. In this third edition, 104 recognized genera of smut fungi are identified, described and illustrated, compared to the second edition, in which 77 genera are identified. While Illustrated Genera presents many theoretical aspects in connection with smut fungi, it particularly helps readers recognize and identify in which genus it belongs. It also discusses problems with smut fungi classification, stimulating researchers to solve them. Identification is made easier in this edition through 116 black and white illustrations, amended descriptions, and a new key to the smut fungus genera, one based on host plant families. And with the help of the recently published Smut Fungi of the World, Dr. Vánky's complementary book on this important topic, the nearly 1,700 known species of smut fungi can be identified. This reference source provides stimulation and utility for all interested in mycology, phytopathology, taxonomy, and botany, including students, teachers, researchers, government- scientists, and even amateurs. Every diagnostic lab and agricultural library should have access to the new update of this classic manual. With more than 60 years of research and experience in the field of smut fungi, resulting in the description of more than 400 new species, 46 new genera, and 12 new families published in more than 225 papers and several books, Dr. Kálmán Vánky, world authority on the smut fungi, presents highly scientific work in an easily understandable form.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mycology, the study of fungi, originated as a subdiscipline of botany and was a des criptive discipline, largely neglected as an experimental science until the early years of this century. A seminal paper by Blakeslee in 1904 provided evidence for self incompatibility, termed "heterothallism", and stimulated interest in studies related to the control of sexual reproduction in fungi by mating-type specificities. Soon to follow was the demonstration that sexually reproducing fungi exhibit Mendelian inheritance and that it was possible to conduct formal genetic analysis with fungi. The names Burgetf, Kniep and Lindegren are all associated with this early period of fungal genet ics research. These studies and the discovery of penicillin by Fleming, who shared a Nobel Prize in 1945, provided further impetus for experimental research with fungi. Thus began a period of interest in mutation induction and analysis of mutants for biochemical traits. Such fundamental research, conducted largely with Neurospora crassa, led to the one gene: one enzyme hypothesis and to a second Nobel Prize for fungal research awarded to Beadle and Tatum in 1958. Fundamental research in biochemical genetics was extended to other fungi, especially to Saccharomyces cerevisiae, and by the mid-1960s fungal systems were much favored for studies in eukaryotic molecular biology and were soon able to compete with bacterial systems in the molecular arena.

Book excerpt: The variety of the mycological world is far greater than most people imagine. Some fungi kill trees and ravage crops, and pathogenic fungi can infect animals and even humans. But fungi also play crucial roles in ecosystems. They act as agents of wood decay in forests, and symbiotic relationships with mycorrhizal fungi are vital to many plants. In this Very Short Introduction Nicholas P. Money explains the essential functions performed by fungi, the importance of studying them to contain fungal diseases, and how fungi are being used in agriculture, biotechnology, and medicine. -- from cover flap.

Book European Smut Fungi

Download or read book European Smut Fungi written by Kálmán Vánky and published by . This book was released on 1994 with total page 592 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Smut fungi (Ustilaginales) are important plant parasites. This book comprises, for the first time, the knowledge about the 400 known smut fungi from Europe. For these 400 species and for further 70, still unknown smuts from Europe, detailed descriptions are given. 82 doubtful or excluded taxa are also presented. The descriptions are completed by 220 drawings of diseased plants and by more than 770 microphotographs of the spores seen in LM, SEM or TEM. Keys to genera and species, a host plant/smut fungus index, together with the descriptions and illustrations, make an easy identification of these plant parasites possible. For economically important smut diseases short control measures are also given. This book will prove an invaluable reference source and standard work for all mycologists, phytopathologists and botanists who intend to identify smut fungi and work with them.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The pace of research on fungi has been accelerating over the past decade. As a result, molecular, biochemical and cell biological studies have opened up new areas of investigation for many of the most important fungal pathogens of crop plants. Similarly, these approaches have provided new information on fungal pathogens of animals and insects, and on fungal endophytes. The collection of chapters in this book provides an excellent update on recent progress for many of the important plant pathogenic fungi that either cause significant economic problems or that serve as useful experimental organisms for gaining general insights. The inclusion of chapters on other fungi will allow readers to make comparisons and draw parallels between a variety of pathogens. In this regard, this book provides a unique perspective that will be valuable to a wide range of readers from senior undergraduates to senior investigators.

Book Fungal Families of the World

Download or read book Fungal Families of the World written by P. F. Cannon and published by CABI. This book was released on 2007-01-01 with total page 474 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Dictionary of the Fungi has been published continuously by CABI from it's outset in 1943 to the latest (tenth) edition in 2008. The primary feature of the Dictionary is an authoritative consensus classification of the fungi, that has been widely accepted as an enabling and informing framework for research into pure and applied mycology. Fungal Families of the World has been conceived as an illustrative and more approachable companion to the Dictionary. Second it provides further substantial information on the 536 currently accepted families of Fungi, with more detailed descriptions and notes on ecology, economic uses, and the like. Third (and perhaps most importantly), it depicts the extraordinary range of morphological structures found in fungi, celebrating myco-diversity and perhaps stimulating interest in mycology by those individuals outside the inner circle of fungal systematists. The taxonomic framework for Fungal Families of the World is based upon that of the ninth edition of Dictionary but has been substantially updated to confirm with the findings of two major US-led research projects on fungal systematics, popularly referred to as Deep Hydra and AFTOL (Assembling the Fungal Tree of Life). The book contains images for over 400 families of the Fung, representing substantially wider fungal diversity than has been achieved before in a single publication. Where practical illustration of both macroscopic and microscopic features have been included. Fungal Families of the World will be of great value to students and researchers in biology, ecology and conservation, to mycologists, agriculturalists and foresters and serves as an informative companion to the Dictionary of the Fungi.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fungal world embodies diversified groups which colonize, multiply and survive in nature on many macro- and micro-ecological niches and substrates. Fungi are eukaryotic, achlorophyllous, filamentous or unicellular living organisms which are ubiquitous and cosmopolitan in distribution. Of the estimated 1.5 million fungal species, more than 98,000 fungal species have been described. Approximately 28,000 fungal species are reported from India. The fungi play an important role in biodegradation, recycling of organic matter, pharmaceutical industries, agriculture, medicine, industry, bioremediation, waste management and other activities. In India hardly we have database but for few a books on Indian fungi, compiled from time to time by some mycologists. The present book includes 16 chapters contributed by eminent mycologists. Chapters include data on diversity, taxonomy, ecology and application of Helicosporous fungi, genus Spegazzinia, Rusts and Smuts, Chaetomiaceae, Macrophomina, Rhizoctonia, Russula, wild edible fungi, poisonous mushrooms, insect fungi and other related aspects. This book will be very useful and a valuable addition to the existing literature on the same subject.
