Book Flora of Alaska and Neighboring Territories

Download or read book Flora of Alaska and Neighboring Territories written by Eric Hultén and published by Stanford University Press. This book was released on 1968 with total page 1050 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monumental work by the world's preeminent authority on Arctic floras--the first comprehensive, up-to-date botanic manual for this region--is the product of the author's more than forty years of study of circumpolar floras. The book describes and illustrates all flowering plants and vascular cryptograms known to occur in Alaska, the Yukon, the Mackenzie District, and the eastern extremity of Siberia. Some 1,974 taxa, belonging to 1,559 species, occur in this region; all are described. For 1,735 of these, the book provides detailed description, nomenclature, plant drawing, and range maps. In each case, one map gives distribution in the Alaskan region; a second, on circumpolar projection, gives worldwide range. This volume is the first major flora to assemble such comprehensive range data and to provide such maps. An analytic key to all species described is provided for each genus, and there is an artificial key to families. An Introduction describes the past and present climatic, geologic, and ecologic character of the regions covered, the history of botanical collection in these regions, and the book's treatment of botanical and taxonomic details; and lists the plants of neighboring regions likely to occur. Glossary, plant authors' list, bibliography, and indexes are provided. The superb drawings were prepared by Dagny Tande-Lid, and eight pages of illustration in color are included.

Book Plant Life of Kentucky

    Book Details:
  • Author : Ronald Jones
  • Publisher : University Press of Kentucky
  • Release : 2005-03-25
  • ISBN : 0813171946
  • Pages : 854 pages

Download or read book Plant Life of Kentucky written by Ronald Jones and published by University Press of Kentucky. This book was released on 2005-03-25 with total page 854 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Plant Life of Kentucky is the first comprehensive guide to all the ferns, flowering herbs, and woody plants of the state. This long-awaited work provides identification keys for Kentucky’s 2,600 native and naturalized vascular plants, with notes on wildlife/human uses, poisonous plants, and medicinal herbs. The common name, flowering period, habitat, distribution, rarity, and wetland status are given for each species, and about 80 percent are illustrated with line drawings. The inclusion of 250 additional species from outside the state (these species are “to be expected” in Kentucky) broadens the regional coverage, and most plants occurring from northern Alabama to southern Ohio to the Mississippi River (an area of wide similarity in flora) are examined, including nearly all the plants of western and central Tennessee. The author also describes prehistoric and historical changes in the flora, natural regions and plant communities, significant botanists, current threats to plant life, and a plan for future studies. Plant Life of Kentucky is intended as a research tool for professionals in biology and related fields, and as a resource for students, amateur naturalists, and others interested in understanding and preserving our rich botanical heritage.

Book Flora of the Pacific Northwest

Download or read book Flora of the Pacific Northwest written by C. Leo Hitchcock and published by University of Washington Press. This book was released on 2018-09-17 with total page 928 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Flora of the Pacific Northwest, first published in 1973, became an instant classic for its innovative style of providing species descriptions in the identification keys, and for its comprehensive illustrations of nearly all treated taxa (species, subspecies, and varieties). Students rely on it as an essential primer, while veteran botanists and natural resource managers use it as the definitive reference for the regions flora. This completely revised and updated edition captures the advances in vascular plant systematics over the decades since publication of the first edition. These advances, together with significant changes in plant nomenclature, the description of taxa new to science from the region, and the recent documentation of new native and nonnative species in the Pacific Northwest required a thorough revision of this authoritative work. Flora of the Pacific Northwest covers all of Washington, the northern half of Oregon, Idaho north of the Snake River Plain, the mountainous portion of western Montana, and the southern portion of British Columbia. It accounts for the wild-growing native and introduced vascular plants falling within those boundaries and includes: Treatment of 5,545 taxa (more than 1,000 taxa added from the first edition) Illustrations for 4,716 taxa (1,382 more than the first edition) Nomenclature changes for more than 40 percent of the taxa included in the first edition These enhancements make this new edition the most comprehensive reference on Pacific Northwest vascular plants for professional and amateur botanists, ecologists, rare plant biologists, plant taxonomy instructors, land managers, nursery professionals, and gardeners.

Book Flora of Malaysia Illustrated

Download or read book Flora of Malaysia Illustrated written by David Thomas Jones and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 1993 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Flora of Malaysia Illustrated is a delightful portfolio of plant portraits selected from among the many thousands of species, both wild forest dwellers and cultivated garden ornamentals, that live in Peninsular Malaysia and the states of Sabah and Sarawak in northern Borneo. The 58 species of native and introduced vascular plants were chosen for their innate beauty in form, texture, and color, and for their diversity in growth habit and habitat. The book begins with some background information about the entire Malaysian flora, with special reference to its diversity and richness and the factors which underlie this. The descriptions and illustrations which follow are grouped under 15 sections, each prefaced by a brief introduction and illustrated by 3-5 watercolors of representative species. The plant descriptions provide information of general interest about the plant's nativity and distribution in Malaysia, appearance and growth habit, traditional uses, botanical and vernacular names, and classification. The book concludes with a select bibliography and an index to scientific and common names. The author, David T. Jones, and the illustrator, Penny German, have combined their talents to produce a book which is not only scientifically informative but also aesthetically pleasing, and which will appeal to students and amateur and professional botanists as well as those with a keen interest in art and natural history.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the latest volume in a major series that describes selections of the rare books, manuscripts, and other works of art held at Oak Spring Garden Library, a collection formed by Rachel Lambert Mellon. The 111 items chosen for this volume on floral illustration since the later Middle Ages include Books of Hours, still-life and vanitas paintings, botanical prints, and books of instruction of every kind, from planting a garden to making flowers using colored papers or wax. Lucia Tongiorgi Tomasi groups the works into chapters on such topics as florilegia, women artists, tulipomania, Dutch and Flemish painting, and exotic flowers from distant lands, providing an introduction to each chapter that gives the contextual background necessary for a real understanding and appreciation of floral illustration past and present. The sheer beauty as well as extraordinary skills encountered, for example, in manuscript florilegia by Jacob Marrel and Maria Sibylla Merian, in hand-colored books by Jacques Le Moyne de Morgues and G.B. Ferrari, and in flower studies painted by John Constable, Margaret Mee, and others, are testament to the high status accorded floral illustration over the centuries. This handsome, richly illustrated volume will attract all those with an interest in rare books and the history of art as well as horticulturalists, botanists, and garden historians.

Book Flora of North America Volume 1 Introduction

Download or read book Flora of North America Volume 1 Introduction written by Flora of North America Editorial Committee and published by . This book was released on 1993 with total page 408 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To be published in 14 volumes over the next 12 years, this long-awaited synoptic compendium represents the first and only comprehensive taxonomic guide to the extraordinary diversity of plant life blanketing our continent north of Mexico--including Greenland and the St. Pierre and Miquelon islands. The collaborative effort of more than 30 major U.S. and Canadian botanical institutions, it revises and synthesizes literally thousands of floristic monographs and regional floras published over the last three centuries. But more than that, it distills the original herbarium, laboratory, and field work of hundreds of contributors--all of them leading botanists and taxonomic authorities who have joined forces to develop this century's premier tool for identifying, understanding, and conserving North America's priceless floristic heritage. Concise, easy to use, and beautifully bound and illustrated, Flora of North America is an indispensable working resource for botanists, conservationists, ecologists, agronomists, foresters, range and land managers, horticulturists,--anyone with a serious interest in the distribution, habitat, morphology, and survival of the wide-ranging plant life around us. Each of its taxonomic volumes brings together the full spectrum of critical botanical data, from basic descriptions to chromosome numbers. The entries also correct erroneous information, qualify misapplied variant names, and note known hybridizations. Findings derived from recent experimental work and from numerical taxonomy are incorporated, and to assure accuracy, these data have been extensively reviewed and tested by cooperating taxonomic specialists. Volume 1 consists of a series of introductory essays by nearly two dozen noted botanical authorities. Among the topics covered are the transformation of North American plant life since the end of the Mesozoic era some 70 million years ago; the influence of geographic, climatic, and soil factors; the impact of human cultivation; great naturalists and their contributions to botany and floristics since the age of Columbus; and approaches to plant classification, with particular attention to the evolutionarily unique pteridophytes and gymnosperms that are covered in Volume 2.
