Book excerpt: Excerpt from Illustrated Catalogue of the Remarkable Collection of Early English and American Furniture and Rare Antique Objects in Various Metals Belonging to Mr. Clarence J. Dearden of This City: To Which Has Been Added the Property of the Estate of a Prominent New England Collector, Now Deceased, and Which Is to Be Sold by Order of Executor, the Entire Collection to Be Sold at Unrestricted Public Sale on the Dates Herein Stated In looking over the productions of the cabinet maker and the workers in metals here brought together, the thought will not escape one that though offered by a dealer the articles in the main form a specially and carefully selected collection - a collection in which taste and knowledge, rather than com mercial opportunity, have dictated the purchases, - in which, even, personal vagaries have been pleasantly indulged. It is, therefore, emphatically an interesting collection. With utility and decorative quality goes hand in hand the distinctive at tribute of the collector. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Illustrated Catalogue of Rare and Beautiful Early American and Colonial Furniture, an Extraordinary Gathering of Hooked Rugs and Other Contemporaneous Treasures Collected During Many Years by the Amateur Mrs. F. H. Davis of Flushing, L. I: To Be Sold at Unrestricted Public Sale for Account of the Owner on the Afternoons Herein Stated It has seldom fallen to my lot to pass under review such a characteristic collection of Early American furniture and domes tic objects as that belonging to Mrs. F. H. Davis, of Flushing, L. I. Since her earliest years, it seems that Mrs. Davis has col lected, and as her chief regard has always been for the old - time things of our ancestors, it has followed, as a natural consequence, that she has accumulated, in the many years lying between, an extraordinarily large number of Early American things which, thanks to her knowledge and unerring judgment, are beyond all question or cavil as to their genuineness. Colonial is what these objects are somewhat loosely termed, but this name is correctly applied only to furniture, etc., made during the first three-quar ters of the eighteenth century, either in this country or across the ocean, and Early American will be found to be a much more truthful, as well as judicious, method of naming a large portion of them. It will be noticed that a large majority of Mrs. Davis's possessions were procured in New England, a fact mainly due to the circumstances that she is a Maine woman born and bred, and that the field of her activities has lain chiefly in those North eastern States we are accustomed to know as New England. Particularly striking, for instance, will be found the gathering of early Hooked Rugs. Owing to their fascinating colors, often due to the dyeing of the yarn by the native Indians, the naivete of their design and their admirable wearing qualities, these domestic rugs have lately come into high favor. There are those still liv ing, by the way, Whose girlish energies were largely devoted to the hooking of these rugs, but all of those here offered date from the beginning of the nineteenth century. Book Illustrated Catalogue of Rare American Furniture of the 17th and 18th Centuries English Furniture of the Cromwellian William and Mary Queen Anne and Georgian Periods

Download or read book Illustrated Catalogue of Rare American Furniture of the 17th and 18th Centuries English Furniture of the Cromwellian William and Mary Queen Anne and Georgian Periods written by American Art Association and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-28 with total page 62 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Illustrated Catalogue of Rare American Furniture of the 17th and 18th Centuries, English Furniture of the Cromwellian, William and Mary, Queen Anne and Georgian Periods: Early American and English Cut Glass, Old Silver, Painted Iron Garden Furniture, an 18th Century American Black Marble Portal and Other Contemporaneous Objects Clock by Gillett of Manchester. Complementing these are two Chinese Chippendale Screens of great decorative merit, one in wall paper, the other covered with a richly toned printed Chintz. There are two interesting oak Refectory Tables, and with them several seventeenth century Chairs, Chests and smaller Tables. Although the painted Iron Garden Furniture is not very old, it is all patterned on fine eighteenth century models that are now so much in demand. A few pieces of Old Silver, two fine pairs of early Andirons, one of Boston Bell-metal, lustred Brass Lamps, a large Brass Aviary, Pewter and Forged Iron Torcheres, help to give a New England flavor to the collection. An eighteenth century American Black Marble Portal, with sculptured statuary enrichments, is most alluring in its simple lines and restraint of detail. There are among the specimens of American and English Glass most distinguished groups of Early Sandwich in quantities sufficiently large for Table Service - this, of course, is very nu usual indeed; also Bristol and Waterford Lustres, Compotiers similarly distinguished in their own way. One or two pieces of Early Bennington represent America among quite a gathering of beautiful Staffordshire Silver Resist and Lustred Pitchers, a contemporary figure of Franklin, fedg wood Candlesticks, Jardinieres and a unique Jelly Mold, painted on the inner mold so that the flowers can be seen through the jelly before it is served; the only known other in as perfect con dition as this, is on exhibition at South Kensington Museum, London. Two eighteenth century Chinese Lowestoft Cachepots, showing French influence, are more than delightful, and so are the Tea Services, one from the same source, the other from the Chamberlain - Worcester Kilns.
