Prisse d'Avennes' monumental work, first published in Paris over a ten-year period between 1868 and 1878, includes the only surviving record of many lost artifacts. ''None of Prisse's contemporaries had the skill or endurance to bring such an endeavor to such a brilliant end. He was far ahead of his time in his awareness of the vulnerability of the monuments and the need to protect them and to record them. His were the first reliable drawings of Egyptian architecture and ornaments and the first plans and sections of constructions newly excavated. He returned to Paris [in 1860] with a rich harvest of 300 drawings, 400 meters of squeezes, and 150 photographs.'' - Maarten J. Raven, Curator of the Egyptian Department, the Rijksmuseum van Oudheden, Leiden. Now reissued in a handy new hardbound reference format.

Book excerpt: The Art in Ancient Egypt in two volumes is a study of Egyptian arts and of their connection with the national religion and civilization written by French archeologists and historians Georges Perrot and Charles Chipiez. The aim of the work was to trace the course of the great evolution which culminated in the age of Pericles and came to an end in that of Marcus Aurelius. That evolution forms a complete entirety – an unbroken chain of cause and effect uniting the two eras. Using carefully selected examples authors prove that the art of the Egyptians went through the same process of development as those of other nationalities, earlier and later ones, and that the unique quality of the sculptures and paintings of the Nile Valley was a persistent affinity to simplification, which comes in part from the habit created by writing the hieroglyphic and in part from the materials used.

Book excerpt: The enduring popularity and fascination with the art of Egypt is at the heart of this volume. This completely new survey sets out to shatter any conventional beliefs that Egyptian art is obsessed with funerary themes and full of static renderings of the human form. The authors present this art, which has a 7,000 year history, as a product of a civilization wholly different from our own. One hundred of the most significant pieces from the Brooklyn Museum of Art are chronologically organized, revealing how Egyptian 'art' developed and progressed.

These ancient artists took their inspiration from the Nile valley and its people, the awesome majesty of the pharaohs, and the mysterious world of the gods. Much of the material that has survived was intended to serve a deceased man or woman in the afterlife. This volume includes some of the more famous images: the gold mask of Tutankhamun, the haunting face of the enigmatic pharaoh Akhenaten, and the striking tomb painting of the beautiful Nefertari, wife of Ramesses II; the magical burial rites illustrated in the papyri known as the Books of the Dead and the tomb paintings that reflect the expectations for the afterlife; and finally statues of Osiris and the other deities that controlled every aspect of life--and rebirth. --back cover.
