Book excerpt: The `Missal of Robert of Jumièges' is one of the most important, and also most beautifully written and decorated, service books which have survived from the late Anglo-Saxon period. Probably written at Canterbury in the early years of the eleventh century, it eventually came into the possession of Robert, bishop of London (1044-51), who gave it to the abbey of Jumièges in France, where it remained until 1791. From a liturgical point of view, the manuscript is notable for the large number of masses commemorating not only native English, but also continental, and particularly Flemish, saints culted in late Anglo-Saxon England; the book is thus an important witness to the cultural links between England and the Continent at that time. The text, first published in 1896, has a still-valuable introduction by its editor and is accompanied by fifteen black and white plates, which give some impression of the original, lavish decoration. There are also full indexes of liturgical forms and subjects.

Download or read book Peterborough and the Soke written by Ron Baxter and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-07-03 with total page 444 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The British Archaeological Association Conference held at Peterborough in 2015 provided a welcome opportunity for a new analysis of the cathedral’s architecture, sculpture and artistic production, and a reassessment of the relationship between the former abbey, the city and its institutions, and the Soke over which it held sway. This ambitious volume casts new light on the Roman occupation of the Nene valley, and the rich Anglo-Saxon sculptural and manuscript context that preceded the construction of the present cathedral, as well as exploring the vital Romanesque tradition of the Soke and the essential contribution of the Barnack quarries. But inevitably the most exciting new disclosures concern the church: its high-quality building campaigns during the 12th to 16th centuries, its abbots’ tombs and the reconstruction of the lost 14th-century High Altar screen from descriptions and loose fragments. Peterborough has attracted the attention of antiquarian scholars since its sacking by Cromwell’s men during the Civil War, and as its secrets are gradually revealed it continues to stimulate the historical imagination.

Download or read book Fakes Forgeries and Fictions written by Tony Burke and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2017-05-31 with total page 472 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fakes, Forgeries, and Fictions examines the possible motivations behind the production of apocryphal Christian texts. Did the authors of Christian apocrypha intend to deceive others about the true origins of their writings? Did they do so in a way that is distinctly different from New Testament scriptural writings? What would phrases like "intended to deceive" or "true origins" even mean in various historical and cultural contexts? The papers in this volume, presented in September 2015 at York University in Toronto, discuss texts from as early as second-century papyrus fragments to modern apocrypha such as tales of Jesus in India in the nineteenth-century Life of Saint Issa. The highlights of the collection include a keynote address by Bart Ehrman ("Apocryphal Forgeries: The Logic of Literary Deceit") and a panel discussion on the Gospel of Jesus' Wife, reflecting on what reactions to this particular text--primarily on biblioblogs--can tell us about the creation, transmission, and reception of apocryphal Christian literature. The eye-opening papers presented at the panel caution and enlighten readers about the ethics of studying unprovenanced texts, the challenges facing female scholars both in the academy and online, and the shifting dynamics between online and traditional print scholarship.
