Book excerpt: Excerpt from Illinois the Story of the Prairie State And over the coal, from ten to two hundred feet deep, is the rich soil of the prairies. Treeless, level or slightly rolling, extremely fertile, the surface of Illinois has made its contribution to her greatness. Rich, varied, unusual as are nature's gifts to the state, they are equaled only by the romance of her history. No other state in the Union has such a background of color and adventure. N 0 other has given more to the story of the nation. Claimed by Spain, explored and occupied by France, held by England, conquered by the American forces, the record is full of variety and interest. And it is not a story merely - the wonderful thing is that it is all true! About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Illinois the Prairie State Classic Reprint

Download or read book Illinois the Prairie State Classic Reprint written by Carl Willard Smith and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-10-03 with total page 30 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Illinois, the "Prairie State" Several persons' identified with the mob were tried and acquitted. The owners of the warehouse were tried for inciting to riot, and also acquitted. An interesting sidelight to the affair is supplied by one historian. It was claimed that the fatal shots were fired by Dr. Jennings and his comrade, Dr. Beall. And it is said that the former was afterward cut to pieces in a barroom fight in Vicksburg, Miss., and that the latter, while attached to a scouting party of Texas rangers, was captured by the Comanche Indians and burned alive. Lovejoy's death, though nearly forgotten today, created widespread discussion. Newspapers throughout the country appeared in mourning and he was mourned in mass meetings as a martyr to his convictions on slavery and the freedom of the press. Book The Iron Road in the Prairie State

Download or read book The Iron Road in the Prairie State written by Simon Cordery and published by Indiana University Press. This book was released on 2016-01-20 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1836, Abraham Lincoln and Stephen Douglas agreed on one thing: Illinois needed railroads. Over the next fifty years, the state became the nation's railroad hub, with Chicago at its center. Speculators, greed, growth, and regulation followed as the railroad industry consumed unprecedented amounts of capital and labor. A nationwide market resulted, and the Windy City became the site of opportunities and challenges that remain to this day. In this first-of-its-kind history, full of entertaining anecdotes and colorful characters, Simon Cordery describes the explosive growth of Illinois railroads and its impact on America. Cordery shows how railroading in Illinois influenced railroad financing, the creation of a national economy, and government regulation of business. Cordery's masterful chronicle of rail development in Illinois from 1837 to 2010 reveals how the state's expanding railroads became the foundation of the nation's rail network.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Great City and State: The Story of Chicago and Illinois Many seasons passed and finally warm weather in the North stopped an advancing ice blanket. As the forward tip of the glacier gradually melted, it left the great lake that was to act as a divide for the waters of the region. NO man was here to witness the beginning of a young city. No man was here to see a river formed, the river that's shaped like a Y, but the fact remains that the receding river of ice left Nature's gift to us. It left your heritage and mine: a chain of lakes and a system of rivers affording natural transportation unrivalled in North America; a broad, fertile plain and a stretch Of virgin forest rich hinterland for the Red Man who was to come, for the white man who was to follow. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Illinois History Stories: For Use in Elementary Schools The work has been done in the midst of a multitude of other duties which forbade more than an hour or two of continuous attention. A book produced under such circumstances must Show many marks of_ haste, lack of close connection in places, unfortunate choice of phraseology and, perhaps, some mistakes in state ments of facts. The above explanation is our apology for these faults. It is hoped that the book may be useful as supple mentary reading matter in the seventh and eighth grades of the grammar schools, and helpful to those who are preparing to teach, and that it may also be an aid and incentive in the hands of the teachers of the lower grades for doing some oral teaching in the most interesting study of our own state geography and his tory. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Two Circuits: A Story of Illinois Life The next friend says, many of them are underdrawn. So to strike an average, I have left it as originally written. It is in no sense an autobiography. Names and places are mostly fictitious; yet the majority of the incidents are as I, and others saw and heard them. They did not always transpire in the order here given. I had a love for the hardy yeomanry of the ear lier days; for their honest, happy, off-hand man ners, modes of thought and speech. I was at home among them for years, enjoying their labor, humor, privations, pleasures and worship. I have aimed to make the characters original, fresh and alive with the buoyancy and vivacity of pioneer life.
