Download or read book Understanding Reading written by Frank Smith and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2004-05-20 with total page 569 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Understanding Reading revolutionized reading research and theory when the first edition appeared in 1971 and continues to be a leader in the field. In the sixth edition of this classic text, Smith's purpose remains the same: to shed light on fundamental aspects of the complex human act of reading--linguistic, physiological, psychological, and social--and on what is involved in learning to read. The text critically examines current theories, instructional practices, and controversies, covering a wide range of disciplines but always remaining accessible to students and classroom teachers. Careful attention is given to the ideological clash that continues between whole language and direct instruction and currently permeates every aspect of theory and research into reading and reading instruction. To aid readers in making up their own minds, each chapter concludes with a brief statement of "Issues." Understanding Reading: A Psycholinguistic Analysis of Reading and Learning to Read, Sixth Edition is designed to serve as a handbook for language arts teachers, a college text for basic courses on the psychology of reading, a guide to relevant research on reading, and an introduction to reading as an aspect of thinking and learning. It is matchless in integrating a wide range of topics relative to reading while, at the same time, being highly readable and user-friendly for instructors, students, and practitioners.
Download or read book Culturally Responsive Teaching written by Geneva Gay and published by Teachers College Press. This book was released on 2010 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The achievement of students of color continues to be disproportionately low at all levels of education. More than ever, Geneva Gay's foundational book on culturally responsive teaching is essential reading in addressing the needs of today's diverse student population. Combining insights from multicultural education theory and research with real-life classroom stories, Gay demonstrates that all students will perform better on multiple measures of achievement when teaching is filtered through their own cultural experiences. This bestselling text has been extensively revised to include expanded coverage of student ethnic groups: African and Latino Americans as well as Asian and Native Americans as well as new material on culturally diverse communication, addressing common myths about language diversity and the effects of "English Plus" instruction.
Download or read book Early Care and Education for Children in Poverty written by W. Steven Barnett and published by State University of New York Press. This book was released on 1998-03-19 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Barnett and Boocock present a multi-disciplinary assessment of the long-term outcomes of early care and education in the United States and abroad. Innovative new research, together with up-to-date, comprehensive reviews, provide lessons for the design of early childhood programs, policies, and research. Contributors from the fields of education, psychology, sociology, and economics address questions about the causal relationships through which early childhood programs produce their long-term effects, the characteristics of effective early childhood programs, how nations respond to the global social and economic trends that are changing the lives of children and their families everywhere, child care's effects on maternal labor force participation, the potential and perils of welfare reform, and the implications of national economic and political structures for early care and education policies. A unique feature of the book is its attention to the practical problems of conducting research to support public policy development, translating research results into public policy, and improving communication between researchers and policy makers. The research presented in this important volume clearly establishes that early care and education can permanently improve the lives of children in poverty, provides research-based recommendations for achieving that goal through public policy, and sets an agenda for future research on early care and education's long-term outcomes.

Download or read book Learning to Think Spatially written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2005-02-03 with total page 333 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Learning to Think Spatially examines how spatial thinking might be incorporated into existing standards-based instruction across the school curriculum. Spatial thinking must be recognized as a fundamental part of Kâ€"12 education and as an integrator and a facilitator for problem solving across the curriculum. With advances in computing technologies and the increasing availability of geospatial data, spatial thinking will play a significant role in the information-based economy of the twenty-first century. Using appropriately designed support systems tailored to the Kâ€"12 context, spatial thinking can be taught formally to all students. A geographic information system (GIS) offers one example of a high-technology support system that can enable students and teachers to practice and apply spatial thinking in many areas of the curriculum.

Download or read book A Grammar of Mavea written by Valérie Guérin and published by University of Hawaii Press. This book was released on 2011-11-30 with total page 426 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Spoken on Mavea Island by approximately 32 people, Mavea is an endangered Oceanic language of Vanuatu. This work provides grammatical descriptions of this hitherto undescribed language. Fourteen chapters, containing more than 1,400 examples, cover topics in the phonology and morphosyntax of Mavea, with an emphasis on the latter. Of particular interest are examples of individual speaker variation presented throughout the grammar; the presence of three linguo-labials (still used today by a single speaker) that were unexpectedly found before the rounded vowel /o/; and a chapter on numerals and the counting system, which have long been replaced by Bislama’s but are remembered by a handful of speakers. Most of the grammatical descriptions derive from a corpus of texts of various genres (conversations, traditional stories, personal histories, etc.) gathered during the author’s fieldwork, conducted for eleven months between 2005 and 2007.

Book excerpt: This test prep is good for kids who are on the fence and having trouble passing, or need to increase their margin. These kids will often say "I DON'T KNOW WHERE TO START" when explaining their confusion. This book address that problem with three approaches.1) In contrast with the other study guides that use random questions in their practice exams; this book collated the questions into chapters based on the logic to solve them. The 5th grade book is divided into eight chapters. They are Logic, Arithmetic, Geometry, Fractions, Reading Graphs and tables, Measurements including a ruler, basic statistics, and order of operations. This book teaches basics then goes into practice exams with word problems. Once the student is proficient with the questions organized into chapters then they are ready for random questions.2) This study guide has thousands of practice problems. I have placed over 3100 videos on YouTube showing you how to work the problems3) I reviewed several years of past exams and placed enfaces on the easiest and most common questions. Mastering these questions should yield a 75% to 80%. If a student is already achieving this percentage; the other guides or web site with random questions and covering all material might be best.A book might be better for your student than the web sites for two reasons. 1) The more common and easiest questions are using a ruler to measure. The web designers don't know the size of your computer screen and can't determine if the student has measured correctly. We can get a high percentage of these problems easily.2) When studying on a computer there are too many websites with the answers. With a book; parents can have greater assurance the work is being done. This book is developed by a trained professional out of concern. It is not the product of a large publishing house. Download or read book Information Security and Privacy in Network Environments written by and published by United States Congress. This book was released on 1994 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The use of information networks for business and government is expanding enormously. Government use of networks features prominently in plans to make government more efficient, effective, and responsive. But the transformation brought about by the networking also raises new concerns for the security and privacy of networked information. This Office of Technology Assessment (OTA) report was requested by the Senate Committee on Governmental Affairs and the House Subcommittee on Telecommunications and Finance. The report begins with background information and an overview of the current situation, a statement of the problems involved in safeguarding unclassified networked information, and a summary of policy issues and options. The major part of the report is then devoted to detailed discussions of policy issues in three areas: (1) cryptography policy, including federal information processing standards and export controls; (2) guidance on safeguarding unclassified information in federal agencies; and (3) legal issues and information security, including electronic commerce, privacy, and intellectual property. Appendices include Congressional letters of request; the Computer Security Act and related documents; evolution of the digital signature standard; and lists of workshop participants, reviews, and other contributors. An index is provided. A separately published eight-page OTA Report Summary is included. (JLB).

Download or read book Protecting Individual Privacy in the Struggle Against Terrorists written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2008-09-26 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: All U.S. agencies with counterterrorism programs that collect or "mine" personal data-such as phone records or Web sites visited-should be required to evaluate the programs' effectiveness, lawfulness, and impacts on privacy. A framework is offered that agencies can use to evaluate such information-based programs, both classified and unclassified. The book urges Congress to re-examine existing privacy law to assess how privacy can be protected in current and future programs and recommends that any individuals harmed by violations of privacy be given a meaningful form of redress. Two specific technologies are examined: data mining and behavioral surveillance. Regarding data mining, the book concludes that although these methods have been useful in the private sector for spotting consumer fraud, they are less helpful for counterterrorism because so little is known about what patterns indicate terrorist activity. Regarding behavioral surveillance in a counterterrorist context, the book concludes that although research and development on certain aspects of this topic are warranted, there is no scientific consensus on whether these techniques are ready for operational use at all in counterterrorism.
