Book Illinois Baptist Bulletin Vol 40

Download or read book Illinois Baptist Bulletin Vol 40 written by Illinois Baptist State Convention and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-21 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Illinois Baptist Bulletin, Vol. 40: Normal Illinois, May 1919 The State Convention has for its mission: helping all the churches in Illinois it possibly can, in revival work, in locating pastors, helping to pay the salary, etc. It is back of much of the Educational work in the state, co-operates with and helps the charitable institutions, and stands back of the work of supporting Foreign, Home and Women's Missions in the State. It does all in its power to aid the B. Y. P. U. and Sunday School work in the State. Why should not every pastor and every member loyally support the State Convention? They almost all intend to do this, but many become careless about doing it. From now until October 1st we shall have much to say and write about State Convention Finances. Shurtleff College The Illinois Baptist State Convention is now and has been for about eight years, back of Shurtleff College in its moral influence. The Convention is not responsible for any of the finances, but encourages and helps every onward movement. It was three members of the State Convention Board that found and nominated Prof. Geo. M. Potter as President of the institution. Since that time very rapid progress has been made at Alton. The real estate held by the college in St. Louis was not only a source of no income, but a very heavy expense to the college. In 1912 this investment had increased in various ways to $56,261.13. The trustees would have sold the lots for from $20,000 to $30,000 but could not find a buyer. After Potter was elected President, the Executive Committee expended $10,000 in improving the property by paved streets, sidewalks and other things. Finally the amount invested was $72,000. Now the college has sold lots in this St. Louis property amounting to $79,815.00 and the college still owns two lots valued at about $12,000. This nearly $80,000 is now invested in Illinois farm mortgages. In the summer of 1914 the trustees purchased, according to the earnest wish of President Potter, the Leavett home and grounds. This gave the college possession of a ten-roomed home and almost an acre of ground adjoining the college grounds. President Potter's far-sightedness and good judgment led the trustees in 1916 to purchase the entire Justis Bulkley property which was sold for $8,700. This property is across the corner from the campus and consists of two large dwellings and four cottages, with some ideal vacant ground for college purposes. This Bulkley property purchased added six acres to the college property. The Mrs. Eunice Evans bequest added $11,000 to the college two years ago and the Mrs. Mary Flagg Estate added $12,732.80 to the college a few weeks ago. The income of the institution has increased from $20,000 to $30,000. The enrollment of actual college students is the largest in the history of the college. Dr. Myron W. Haynes is now raising $500,000 endowment for the institution. He began January 1st and has now secured about $100,000 and has not yet finished three Associations. Let everybody say a good word for Shurtleff this year. Let every one who can, give something to help Shurtleff now. The Baptists of Illinois have not been asked for any large thing for college work for the past forty or more years. During that time their wealth has increased greatly. Now is the time to give liberally to Shurtleff College. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Find more at www.forgottenbooks.com

Book Illinois Baptist Bulletin 1915 Vol 7 Classic Reprint

Download or read book Illinois Baptist Bulletin 1915 Vol 7 Classic Reprint written by Illinois Baptist State Convention and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-05 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Illinois Baptist Bulletin, 1915, Vol. 7 There is one exception to these percentages; in adjusting the budget for the Home Mission Society and the State Convention, the following rates were agreed upon. In the Chicago Association where the Home Mission Society is doing a large work, the rate is 18 per cent for Home Missions and 11 per cent for State Convention, and in the Ottawa, Bloomfield, Rock Island, Peoria, Quincy and Alton Associations where the State Convention is doing a larger work, the rate for State Convention is 16 per cent, and for Home Missions, 13 per cent. In all the other associations it is 141/2 per cent for Home Missions and 141/2 per cent for State Missions. The apportionments will be worked out for each church on a three fold basis: 1. The church will fall into a high or low missionary group according to its gifts to missions last year. 2. The membership of the church is taken into consideration. 3. The amount the church paid for current expenses last year will be considered. These amounts which are apportioned among the churches are just about what was raised last year, besides the large amount that was given on the deficit of the societies. It has also been a hard year financially, with two severe drouths in the central and southern portions of the state. Also the churches are getting better educated in giving each year. We believe the churches can easily go beyond this apportionment this year. This apportionment for the State Convention is for the year ending October 1, 1916; that which was sent out one year ago was for the year ending this coming October, but the entire sum for the State Convention for the state is the same, $19,000, for each year, and there will be but very little variation in the amount apportioned to the churches for State Convention for the two years. Personals Rev. R. H. Claxon of Taylorville was elected at the semi-annual meeting of the State Board a member of the Board to fill the place of Rev. J. F. Mills, who has removed from Decatur. The Chillicothe, Steuben and Sparland churches will send their pastor, Rev. J. H. Bagwill, to the Northern Baptist Convention at Los Angeles. Rev. Benjamin Otto, D.D., of Peoria will attend the Northern Convention. The Taylorville Church will send its pastor, Rev. R. H. Claxon, to the Convention in Los Angeles. Deaths Prof. Chas. R. Henderson, D.D., for many years professor in the University of Chicago, died Monday morning, March 29th. Failing health caused him to go South where a stroke of paralysis caused his sudden death. The body was brought to Chicago where funeral services were conducted in Mandel Hall at the University. Dr. Henderson was one of the great, good men of his generation. He was regarded as an authority on social science in America and Europe. He has spoken several times at our State Conventions. He has always been a loyal supporter of our State Convention. His life was possibly shortened by his intense work in the interest of humanity and especially in the interest of the poor and unfortunate.
