Some of the major political, economic and social developments which have taken place in the country especially since the seventies also constitute a significant part of the book. The book is intended for those who are going to Tanzania for the first time and for anybody else who wants to learn some basic facts about the largest country in East Africa. Readers are also going to learn quite a few things about the people of Tanzania and their tribes or ethnic groups and where these groups traditionally live. Also covered in the book are the towns and cities in all the provinces of this large country. The purpose is to provide a comprehensive picture of the country by focusing on a number of areas including a general background of Tanzania; the geography of the country; life in Tanzania today and how life was in the seventies and eighties under socialism known as ujamaa which means familyhood in Kiswahili; the country's transition from socialism to a free market economy; ethnic groups or tribes and their home districts and regions; racial minorities who constitute a significant part of Tanzania's population; the Swahili people and their culture; towns and cities; the union of Tanganyika and Zanzibar and its prospects and challenges; and life in Tanzania - in what was then Tanganyika - in the fifties just before independence. There are also chapters on Dar es Salaam, the nation's largest city and commercial centre and former capital, and on the former island nation of Zanzibar. Tanzania also is unique in one fundamental respect. It's the only union of two independent countries ever formed on the African continent. And it's the only one that exists today almost half a century after it was formed. The union between Tanganyika and Zanzibar is one of the subjects covered in the book, and readers are going to learn about one of the most important events in the history of post-colonial Africa on a continent where the quest for unity has remained an elusive dream since independence in the fifties and sixties. The book also includes a lot of information on Tanganyika just before independence and how it became one of the first countries in Africa to emerge from colonial rule. Also included is some material on one of the most interesting ethnic groups in African history and how it came into being. It's the Swahili whose language is also known as Swahili especially among many people around the world who are not native speakers of the language. Among the native speakers, the language is called Kiswahili. It's the main language spoken in Tanzania and Kenya. It's also spoken in several other countries in east-central Africa. And we are going to learn something about this language which transcends ethnicity. Kiswahili is not identified with any African tribe, making it a truly Pan-African language building bridges across ethnicity, cultures and nations especially in the eastern part of the continent. And as you learn about Tanzania, you are also going to learn a few things about an area bigger than Tanzania because of the country's connection to other parts of East Africa and beyond.

Book excerpt: Tanzania, the land and the people have been subject of a great deal of historical research, but there remains no readily accessible and concise history of the country. The aim of this volume is to fill that void. A New History of Tanzania takes its name from a lecture series introduced at the University of Dar es Salaam by Professor Isaria Kimambo in 2002. Prior to that, a book titled, A History of Tanzania, had been published in 1969 by East African Publishing House in Nairobi for the Tanzania Historical Association. That book is currently out of print and this is not a reprint. In this book, Prof. Kimambo has been joined by two other colleagues; Prof. Gregory H. Maddox of Texas Southern University, Houston (USA) and Salvatory S. Nyanto, a Tanzanian, Lecturer at the University of Dar es Salaam, and a Ph.D. candidate at the University of Iowa (USA); together they have produced an outline history of Tanzania that covers all important aspects from antiquity to the present that is different from and richer than its predecessor. Sources from the fields of archaeology, anthropology, biology, genetics and oral tradition have been used to produce this excellent book. A New History of Tanzania is a timely contribution to academic requirements for teaching and learning Tanzania’s history. It is also a possible exemplar to the writing of other countries’ histories, departing as it does, from the traditional historiography that is influenced by colonial and postcolonial apologists of nefarious external influences on Africa’s history. It will also interest other Tanzanians and visitors to Tanzania who are interested in understanding the country from when it was a territory with more than one hundred and twenty ethnic groups, to a nation with an unmistakable identity as it marches forward.

They lack adequate food, living expenses, school fees, and care since their current guardians are also in adverse economic situations. In such situations, orphans end up living a life of hopelessness and trauma, which makes them deeply remember their dead parents and the care they received from them before death. Following the vulnerable situation of most orphans, this book, through a study done in the Tanzanian context, challenges churches to extend their counseling and caring ministries to Orphans and Vulnerable Children (OVC). It purports that the use of narrative approach is the most effective way to enter into the world of vulnerable children in order to provide pastoral counseling to them. This approach helps pastoral counselors to use life stories, proverbs, biblical narratives, plays, arts, songs, riddles, poems, symbols, and images as healing and coping mechanisms for OVC. Therefore, this book is helpful not only to churches and their ministry to orphans and vulnerable children, but also to those who care for orphans in their homes. Moreover, it will be helpful to children who live in adverse conditions worldwide to find ways to cope with their situations through the stories of children used inside this book.

Mainly without any information about who these individuals were, how they died and in which manner they got dislocated, a collaboration of researchers of the University of Rwanda, the National Museums of Rwanda and the Stiftung Preußischer Kulturbesitz approached these questions. The research begins with the broader context of colonialism and its local impact to single cases of Human Remains appropriation. Using historical sources, anthropological examinations and comtemporary accounts the origin of the Human Remains were not only recontextualized but interviews conducted in the affected communities also revealed why these human remains should be returned and the variying ways of treatment they should receive thereafter.

The book probes the necessity for having two languages of instruction in the Tanzanian educational system. While Kiswahili, the native language, is predominantly understood by the majority of people, the discussion in this book indicates that most students in community secondary schools in Tanzania are incompetent in understanding, writing, listening, reading, and speaking English, a language they use in learning and doing their examinations, especially in the early stages of their secondary studies. The incompetence in the above-mentioned skills is mostly caused by their inability to cope with the abrupt transition in the languages of instruction from their pre-primary and primary school study [Kiswahili] to secondary school study [English]. Moreover, most teachers are unable to use the English language as a means to impart knowledge or facilitate learning to their students, leading them to code-switching and code-mixing. This book poses a challenge to countries whose students pass through a transition from one language of instruction to another in their educational systems, helping them to make appropriate decisions in regard to the appropriate language of teaching and learning.
