Book Italo Calvino s Architecture of Lightness

Download or read book Italo Calvino s Architecture of Lightness written by Letizia Modena and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2011-05-09 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study recovers Italo Calvino's central place in a lost history of interdisciplinary thought, politics, and literary philosophy in the 1960s. Drawing on his letters, essays, critical reviews, and fiction, as well as a wide range of works--primarily urban planning and design theory and history--circulating among his primary interlocutors, this book takes as its point of departure a sweeping reinterpretation of Invisible Cities. Passages from Calvino's most famous novel routinely appear as aphorisms in calendars, posters, and the popular literature of inspiration and self-help, reducing the novel to vague abstractions and totalizing wisdom about thinking outside the box. The shadow of postmodern studies has had a similarly diminishing effect on this text, rendering up an accomplished but ultimately apolitical novelistic experimentation in endless deconstructive deferrals, the shiny surfaces of play, and the ultimately rigged game of self-referentiality. In contrast, this study draws on an archive of untranslated Italian- and French-language materials on urban planning, architecture, and utopian architecture to argue that Calvino's novel in fact introduces readers to the material history of urban renewal in Italy, France, and the U.S. in the 1960s, as well as the multidisciplinary core of cultural life in that decade: the complex and continuous interplay among novelists and architects, scientists and artists, literary historians and visual studies scholars. His last love poem for the dying city was in fact profoundly engaged, deeply committed to the ethical dimensions of both architecture and lived experience in the spaces of modernity as well as the resistant practices of reading and utopian imagining that his urban studies in turn inspired.

This book was released on 2016-10-31 with total page 429 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the 17th and 18th century musicians' mobilities and migrations are essential for the European music history and the cultural exchange of music. Book Tonal Space in the Music of Antonio Vivaldi

Download or read book Tonal Space in the Music of Antonio Vivaldi written by Bella Brover-Lubovsky and published by Indiana University Press. This book was released on 2008-06-25 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tonal Space in the Music of Antonio Vivaldi incorporates an analytical study of Vivaldi's style into a more general exploration of harmonic and tonal organization in the music of the late Italian Baroque. The harmonic and tonal language of Vivaldi and his contemporaries, full of curious links between traditional modal thinking and what would later be considered common-practice major-minor tonality, directly reflects the historical circumstances of the shifting attitude toward the conceptualization of tonal space so crucial to Western art music. Vivaldi is examined in a completely new context, allowing both his prosaic and idiosyncratic sides to emerge clearly. This book contributes to a better understanding of Vivaldi's individual style, while illuminating wider processes of stylistic development and the diffusion of artistic ideas in the 18th century.

Book The Triumphs of the Defeated

Download or read book The Triumphs of the Defeated written by Peter Davidson and published by Harrassowitz. This book was released on 2007 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The subject of this monograph is early modern European festival culture. The eleven contributions describe aspects of festivities or ceremonies organized by individuals or groups whose power base was threatened or non-existent: refugees, confessional groups, minorities and women. A central question is the complexity of the term "defeated". The contributions investigate the cultural strategies which minorities exploited in order to underpin their claims to legitimacy and retain their identity in the face of a hostile or indifferent environment.
