Book Yours Is a Precious Witness

Download or read book Yours Is a Precious Witness written by Margherita Marchione and published by Paulist Press. This book was released on 2001 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mainly using untapped oral histories of Italian Jews and Catholics, this book shows that Catholics in Italy who saved Jews firmly believed they were doing so in consonance with the Pope's wishes, Readers will get to know these courageous individuals through their inspiring memoirs. Yours Is a Precious Witness strives to redraw a common picture of Pius XII. He spoke loudly -- not in words that would have resulted in Nazi retaliations, but in actions that directly saved thousands of Jews, Convents, monasteries and papal buildings in Italy became havens for refugees. Pius XXII did not bow to the Nazis and Fascists. He also did not bow to the pressure of world opinion. He took the more courageous path of direct action. His example inspired Italians to respond with countless acts of individual heroism. The little-known result is that, while 67 percent of European Jews were killed, 85 percent of Italy's Jews were saved. The people who were there -- the people who knew best -- credit Pius XII for this moral victory.

This book was released on 2016-07-01 with total page 357 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This comprehensive guide will facilitate scholarly research concerning the history of Christianity in China as well as the wider Sino-Western cultural encounter. It will assist scholars in their search for material on the anthropological, educational, medical, scientific, social, political, and religious dimensions of the missionary presence in China prior to 1950.The guide contains nearly five hundred entries identifying both Roman Catholic and Protestant missionary sending agencies and related religious congregations. Each entry includes the organization's name in English, followed by its Chinese name, country of origin, and denominational affiliation. Special attention has been paid to identifying the many small, lesser-known groups that arrived in China during the early decades of the twentieth century. In addition, a special category of the as yet little-studied indigenous communities of Chinese women has also been included. Multiple indexes enhance the guide's accessibility.

Book Sudden Death Medicine and Religion in Eighteenth Century Rome

Download or read book Sudden Death Medicine and Religion in Eighteenth Century Rome written by Maria Pia Donato and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-04-01 with total page 263 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1705-1706, during the War of the Spanish Succession and two years after a devastating earthquake, an ’epidemic’ of mysterious sudden deaths terrorized Rome. In early modern society, a sudden death was perceived as a mala mors because it threatened the victim’s salvation by hindering repentance and last confession. Special masses were celebrated to implore God’s clemency and Pope Clement XI ordered his personal physician, Giovanni Maria Lancisi, to perform a series of dissections in the university anatomical theatre in order to discover the 'true causes' of the deadly events. It was the first investigation of this kind ever to take place for a condition which was not contagious. The book that Lancisi published on this topic, De subitaneis mortibus (’On Sudden Deaths’, 1707), is one of the earliest modern scientific investigations of death; it was not only an accomplished example of mechanical philosophy as applied to the life sciences in eighteenth-century Europe, but also heralded a new pathological anatomy (traditionally associated with Giambattista Morgagni). Moreover, Lancisi’s tract and the whole affair of the sudden deaths in Rome marked a significant break in the traditional attitude towards dying, introducing a more active approach that would later develop into the practice of resuscitation medicine. Sudden Death explores how a new scientific interpretation of death and a new attitude towards dying first came into being, breaking free from the Hippocratic tradition, which regarded death as the obvious limit of physician’s capacity, and leading the way to a belief in the 'conquest of death' by medicine which remains in force to this day.

Download or read book Holy Anorexia written by Rudolph M. Bell and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2014-05-09 with total page 277 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “A brilliant, disturbing study of anorexic behavior amongst medieval Italian female saints . . . original, controversial, superbly executed.” —Kirkus Reviews Is there a resemblance between the contemporary anorexic teenager counting every calorie in her single-minded pursuit of thinness, and an ascetic medieval saint examining her every desire? Rudolph M. Bell suggests that the answer is yes. “Everyone interested in anorexia nervosa . . . should skim this book or study it. It will make you realize how dependent upon culture the definition of disease is. I will never look at an anorexic patient in the same way again.” —Howard Spiro, M.D., Gastroenterology “[This] book is a first-class social history and is well-documented both in its historical and scientific portions.” —Vern L. Bullough, American Historical Review “A significant contribution to revisionist history, which re-examines events in light of feminist thought . . . Bell is particularly skillful in describing behavior within its time and culture, which would be bizarre by today’s norms, without reducing it to the pathological.” —Mary Lassance Parthun, Toronto Globe and Mail “Bell is both enlightened and convincing. His book is impressively researched, easy to read, and utterly fascinating.” —Sheila MacLeod, New Statesman
