Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For those who ruled medieval society, the family was the crucial social unit, made up of those from whom property and authority were inherited and those to whom it passed. One's kin could be one's closest political and military allies or one's fiercest enemies. While the general term used to describe family members was consanguinei mei, "those of my blood," not all of those relations-parents, siblings, children, distant cousins, maternal relatives, paternal ancestors, and so on-counted as true family in any given time, place, or circumstance. In the early and high Middle Ages, the "family" was a very different group than it is in modern society, and the ways in which medieval men and women conceptualized and structured the family unit changed markedly over time. Focusing on the Frankish realm between the eighth and twelfth centuries, Constance Brittain Bouchard outlines the operative definitions of "family" in this period when there existed various and flexible ways by which individuals were or were not incorporated into the family group. Even in medieval patriarchal society, women of the aristocracy, who were considered outsiders by their husbands and their husbands' siblings and elders, were never completely marginalized and paradoxically represented the very essence of "family" to their male children. Bouchard also engages in the ongoing scholarly debate about the nobility around the year 1000, arguing that there was no clear point of transition from amorphous family units to agnatically structured kindred. Instead, she points out that great noble families always privileged the male line of descent, even if most did not establish father-son inheritance until the eleventh or twelfth century. Those of My Blood clarifies the complex meanings of medieval family structure and family consciousness and shows the many ways in which negotiations of power within the noble family can help explain early medieval politics.

Book The Seigneurial Transformation

Download or read book The Seigneurial Transformation written by Alessio Fiore and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2020-03-05 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In The Seigneurial Transformation, Alessio Fiore discusses the transformation of the fabric of power in the kingdom of Italy in the period between the late eleventh century and the early twelfth century. The study analyses the major socio-political change of this period, the crisis of royal and public structures, and the development of seigneurial powers, using as a starting point the structures of power over men and land, and the discourses about the exercise of local power. This period was marked by a rapid reshaping of the structures of local power; while the outbreak of civil wars in the 1080s did not imply a clear-cut rupture with the past, it led to a staggering acceleration of pre-existing dynamics, with a reconfiguration of the matrix of power, in turn expressed in a transformation both of the instruments of local political communications and of the practices of power.

Book Framing the Early Middle Ages

Download or read book Framing the Early Middle Ages written by Chris Wickham and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2006-11-30 with total page 1019 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Roman empire tends to be seen as a whole whereas the early middle ages tends to be seen as a collection of regional histories, roughly corresponding to the land-areas of modern nation states. As a result, early medieval history is much more fragmented, and there have been few convincing syntheses of socio-economic change in the post-Roman world since the 1930s. In recent decades, the rise of early medieval archaeology has also transformed our source-base, but this has not been adequately integrated into analyses of documentary history in almost any country. In Framing the Early Middle Ages Chris Wickham combines documentary and archaeological evidence to create a comparative history of the period 400-800. His analysis embraces each of the regions of the late Roman and immediately post-Roman world, from Denmark to Egypt. The book concentrates on classic socio-economic themes, state finance, the wealth and identity of the aristocracy, estate management, peasant society, rural settlement, cities, and exchange. These give only a partial picture of the period, but they frame and explain other developments. Earlier syntheses have taken the development of a single region as 'typical', with divergent developments presented as exceptions. This book takes all different developments as typical, and aims to construct a synthesis based on a better understanding of difference and the reasons for it.

Book Villa to Village

    Book Details:
  • Author : Riccardo Francovich
  • Publisher : Bristol Classical Press
  • Release : 2003-09-25
  • ISBN :
  • Pages : 136 pages

Download or read book Villa to Village written by Riccardo Francovich and published by Bristol Classical Press. This book was released on 2003-09-25 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Villa to Village challenges the historical view that hilltop villages in Italy were first founded in the tenth century. Drawing upon recent excavations, the authors show that the makings of the medieval village lie in the demise of the Roman villa in late antiquity. The book describes the lively debate between archaeologists and historians on this issue. It also examines the evidence for the first manorial villages of the Carolingian era and describes how these were transformed into the familiar feudal villages that are characteristic of much of Italy. Useful maps, plans and reconstructions illustrate this useful text.

Book Coin Hoards

Download or read book Coin Hoards written by Ute Wartenberg and published by Spink Books. This book was released on 2002 with total page 394 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This, the ninth volume of Coin Hoards, is again dedicated solely to hoards of Greek coins. It includes hoards from all areas around the Mediterranean from the sixth century BC to the second century AD. Coin Hoards IX, together with the previous volumes in the series, thus forms an essential supplement to the Inventory of Greek Coin Hoards, published in 1973 by Thompson, Morkholm and Kraay. Since the last volume, published eight years ago, the number of Greek coin hoards has increased considerably. Not only does this volume list new hoards, but it also updates and often amends information on hoards already published. Overall, the inventory for this volume consists of 744 entries, with detailed references to find-spot (if known), content, approximate burial date and bibliography. In addition to the inventory, Coin Hoards IX also contains the detailed publication of a number of significant hoards. An important aspect of this volume is the inclusion of 66 plates of photographs illustrating a large proportion of those coins described. This volume will be in indispensable tool for all future research in the field.

Book The Archaeology of Iberia

Download or read book The Archaeology of Iberia written by Margarita Diaz-Andreu and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-12-02 with total page 334 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For many archaeologists, Iberia is the last great unknown region in Europe. Although it occupies a crucial position between South-Western Europe and North Africa, academic attention has traditionally been focused on areas like Greece or Italy. However Iberia has an equally rich cultural heritage and archaeological tradition. This ground-breaking volume presents a sample of the ways in which archaeologists have applied theoretical frameworks to the interpretation of archaeological evidence, offering new insights into the archaeology of both Iberia and Europe from prehistoric time through to the tenth century. The contributors to this book are leading archaeologists drawn from both countries. They offer innovative and challenging models for the Paleolithic, Neolithic, Copper Age, Bronze Age, Iron Age, Roman, Early Medieval and Islamic periods. A diverse range of subjects are covered including urban transformation, the Iron Age peoples of Spain, observations on historiography and the origins of the Arab domains of Al-Andalus. It is essential reading for advanced undergraduates and those researching the archaeology of the Iberian Peninsula.
