Book Portraying Cicero in Literature Culture and Politics

Download or read book Portraying Cicero in Literature Culture and Politics written by Francesca Romana Berno and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2022-02-21 with total page 540 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cicero has played a pivotal role in shaping Western culture. His public persona, his self-portrait as model of Roman prose, philosopher, and statesman, has exerted a durable and profound impact on the educational system and the formation of the ruling class over the centuries. Joining up with recent studies on the reception of Cicero, this volume approaches the figure of Cicero from a ‘biographical’, more than ‘philological’, perspective and considers the multiple ways by which different ages reacted to Cicero and created their ‘Ciceros’. From Cicero’s lifetime to our times, it focuses on how the image of Cicero was revisited and reworked by intellectuals and men of culture, who eulogized his outstanding oratorical and political virtues but, not rarely, questioned the role he had in Roman politics and society. An international group of scholars elaborates on the figure of Cicero, shedding fresh light on his reception in late antiquity, Humanism and Renaissance, Enlightenment and modern centuries. Historians, literary scholars and philosophers, as well as graduate students, will certainly profit from this volume, which contributes enormously to our understanding of the influence of Cicero on Western culture over the times.

Book The Collectio Avellana and Its Revivals

Download or read book The Collectio Avellana and Its Revivals written by Rita Lizzi Testa and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2019-01-31 with total page 682 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Collectio Avellana (CA) has an extraordinary richness and variety of content. Imperial rescripts, reports of urban prefects, letters of bishops, and exchanges of letters between popes and emperors, some of which only this compilation preserves, constitute an exceptional documentary collection for researchers of various sectors of antiquity. This volume is the first publication to reconstruct the history of this compilation through the fascinating questions that it poses to the scholar. There are essays on its general structure, and on some of the most singular texts preserved therein. Other papers offer a comparison between this compilation and the other canonical collections compiled in Italy between the fourth and sixth centuries, as well as between the CA and other contemporary literary products. Adopting a new approach, some contributions also ascertain who could physically have access to the materials that were collected in the CA, and where the compiler could find them. All these fresh studies have led to new hypotheses regarding the period in which the collection, or at least some of its parts, took shape and the personality of its author.

Book Investigating Italy s Past through Historical Crime Fiction Films and TV Series

Download or read book Investigating Italy s Past through Historical Crime Fiction Films and TV Series written by Barbara Pezzotti and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-09-11 with total page 277 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the first monograph in English that comprehensively examines the ways in which Italian historical crime novels, TV series, and films have become a means to intervene in the social and political changes of the country. This study explores the ways in which fictional representations of the past mirror contemporaneous anxieties within Italian society in the work of writers such as Leonardo Sciascia, Andrea Camilleri, Carlo Lucarelli, Francesco Guccini, Loriano Macchiavelli, Marcello Fois, Maurizio De Giovanni, and Giancarlo De Cataldo; film directors such as Elio Petri, Pietro Germi, Michele Placido, and Damiano Damiani; and TV series such as the “Commissario De Luca” series, the “Commissario Nardone” series, and “Romanzo criminale–The series.” Providing the most wide-ranging examination of this sub-genre in Italy, Barbara Pezzotti places works set in the Risorgimento, WWII, and the Years of Lead in the larger social and political context of contemporary Italy.

Book The Republican Police 1943 1945

Download or read book The Republican Police 1943 1945 written by Gabriele Malavoglia and published by Soldiershop Publishing. This book was released on 2024-04-09 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Social Republic had its own Public Security structure, the Republican Police Corps, formed by a kind of dual soul: one territorial, engaged in the institutional tasks of the Police, and one more distinctly a child of the tremendous period that was being experienced, devoted mainly to the persecution of the political opponents of fascism, the partisans, and the hunting of jews. At times these two souls interpenetrated, although the division remained very sharp. Until now very little has been written about the events of the Republican Police, research has focused, for different and sometimes opposing reasons, mainly on those para-police units, often known as "gangs," devoted to the most violent and cruel activities, which operated mostly in close dependence with the Germanic commands. What has been left out, however, is the more institutional aspect of the Republican police, in whose ranks militated a great many honest and probable men, who, in many cases, also worked to save Jews or secretly militated in the Resistance. Far from having made a systematic and exhaustive study, an attempt has been made in these pages to summarize all aspects characterizing the structure of the police during the period of the Italian Social Republic.

Book Contemporary Suicide Terrorism Origins Trends and Ways of Tackling It

Download or read book Contemporary Suicide Terrorism Origins Trends and Ways of Tackling It written by T. Dronzina and published by IOS Press. This book was released on 2012-11-12 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Suicide terrorism represents a tangible challenge to national, regional and global security. This much is not in question; but opinions differ, conceptually and normatively, as to its root causes, factors and motives. This book presents the research papers delivered at the conference ‛Contemporary Suicide Terrorism: Origins, Trends and Ways of Tackling it’ held in Astana, Kazakhstan, in September 2010. The conference was funded by the NATO Science for Peace and Security Programme, and provided a forum for dialogue and discussion between scholars and security practitioners from Azerbaijan, Armenia, Bulgaria, Spain, Italy, Israel, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Morocco, Romania and Russia. The focus of the conference was on methodological and theoretical approaches to suicide terrorism researches. Topics addressed include: the effectiveness of suicide terrorism; the roots of suicide terrorism and its religious legitimation; the impact of new technologies on the radicalization process; terrorism and the drug trade; female suicide bombers; and migration, radicalization and disorder in the EU. Examples are drawn from experiences in the Maghreb, the West Bank and Gaza Strip in Israel, Dagestan, Romania, Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan. The book conveys the spirit of tolerance, exchange of ideas, dialogue and convergence that dominated the conference. It offers a contribution to better understanding between societies and the fostering of a culture of peace and non-violence.

Book Living Like Nomads

    Book Details:
  • Author : Fausto Butta
  • Publisher : Cambridge Scholars Publishing
  • Release : 2015-09-04
  • ISBN : 1443881597
  • Pages : 299 pages

Download or read book Living Like Nomads written by Fausto Butta and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2015-09-04 with total page 299 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite the vast amount of research on Italian anarchism conducted over the last forty years, little is known about the history of Milanese anarchists. Living Like Nomads: The Milanese Anarchist Movement Before Fascism illuminates anarchist ideas, practices and militants in Milan during the two decades before the rise of fascism. It tells the fascinating stories of some Italian anarchists at the beginning of the twentieth century, and sheds light on their lifestyle, political campaigns and ideological debates. Living Like Nomads examines anarchist thought, particularly the relationship between theories of individualism and communist anarchism. It engages with masters of this school of philosophy such as Bakunin, Malatesta, Stirner and Kropotkin. By detailing the lives of unknown anarchists, it reveals the pivotal role played by anarchists – and anarchism – within the eclectic Italian Left. Milanese anarchists produced exciting initiatives and captivating ideological debates. While they did not cause a revolution in Milan, their importance cannot be overlooked. Anarchists in Milan gave birth to the first non-denominational modern school, campaigned against militarism, engaged with the labour movement, and published extensively. No other anarchist movement has published as much as Milanese anarchists did. While such anarchists did not prevent the rise of fascism in Italy, they were the first instance of anti-fascist resistance when they stood up against the violence of Mussolini’s black shirts after the First World War. Given anarchism’s principles of individual freedom, social justice and equality, this insightful study of the troubled history of anarchist movements contributes to a greater understanding of the modern Left.

Book Internal exile in Fascist Italy

Download or read book Internal exile in Fascist Italy written by Piero Garofalo and published by Manchester University Press. This book was released on 2019-05-13 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study offers a clear, concise introduction to the Fascist-era practice, know as confino, of exiling antifascist dissidents to parts of Italy far from the dissidents’ homes, often on islands or in tiny inland villages. The book is organised in two sections. Part one provides a case study of the political colony on the island of Lipari and a historical overview of internal exile. Part two focuses on representations of confinement in literature and film. It examines the varieties of self-expression (e.g. memoirs, letters and literature) used by prisoners to describe their experiences, investigates how filmmakers interpret these events, places and people, and explores how film portrays the repression of homosexuality. A timely examination of the birthplace of European federalism, the book also contributes to our understanding of the legacy of confinement from both national and European perspectives.
