Bilingual Editon. Translated from the Italian by Luigi Bonaffini. THE BEDROOM [La camera da letto] is Bertolucci's best-known work, so popular that the poet once read it to television viewers on a seven-hour program. It is a narrative poem that traces the history of the poet's family across seven generations with directness, precision and attention to everyday details, major events and fantastic surprises. Paolo Lagazzi writes in his introduction: "THE BEDROOM is a sort of a multi-novel, or a distillation of very diverse narrative forms and intuitions: a Bildungsroman and fairytale, an epoch novel, a novel-chronicle, a dramatic novel and a picaresque novel. An experimental work in the most authentic sense of the word..." "Nothing of time's essence escapes or is neglected by the author's ravenous sensibility, no less active in recording the multiple places in which existence rests (the city and the countryside, the sea and the plane, the Po river and the Maremma) in an exuberant display of forms, lights, perspectives, tonalities."—Luigi Ferrara

  • Author : Eugenio Garin
  • Publisher : University of Chicago Press
  • Release : 1997-05-09
  • ISBN : 0226283569
  • Pages : 314 pages

Download or read book Renaissance Characters written by Eugenio Garin and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 1997-05-09 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Compared to the Middle Ages, the Renaissance is brief—little more than two centuries, extending roughly from the mid-fourteenth century to the end of the sixteenth century—and largely confined to a few Italian city states. Nevertheless, the epoch marked a great cultural shift in sensibilities, the dawn of a new age in which classical Greek and Roman values were "reborn" and human values in all fields, from the arts to civic life, were reaffirmed. With this volume, Eugenio Garin, a leading Renaissance scholar, has gathered the work of an international team of scholars into an accessible account of the people who animated this decisive moment in the genesis of the modern mind. We are offered a broad spectrum of figures, major and minor, as they lived their lives: the prince and the military commander, the cardinal and the courtier, the artist and the philosopher, the merchant and the banker, the voyager, and women of all classes. With its concentration on the concrete, the specific, even the anecdotal, the volume offers a wealth of new perspectives and ideas for study.

Download or read book Bruno Munari written by Miroslava Hajek and published by Silvana Editoriale. This book was released on 2012 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bruno Munari (1907-1998) played a pioneering role in the evolution of twentieth-century art and design, his work exerting an influence that stretched far beyond the borders of Italy. Munari described the roots of his work as his 'Futurist past', but his influences were extremely varied, also reflecting the aesthetics and sensibilities of Constructivism, Dada and Surrealism. This exhibition at the Estorick collection in London explores Munari's artistic research between 1927 and 1950, spanning the artist's Futurist phase and early investigation of the possibilities of kinetic sculpture, the immediate post-war years during which he became a leading figure of abstract painting and his subsequent experiments with projected light and installation-based work. 0Exhibition: Estorick Collection of Modern Italian Art, London, UK (19.9.-23.12.2012).

Book Dante and the Victorians

Download or read book Dante and the Victorians written by Alison Milbank and published by Manchester University Press. This book was released on 1998 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Milbank (English, U. of Cambridge) argues that an understanding of Victorianism's reception of Dante is essential for understanding its notions of history, nationalism, aesthetics, and gender as well as the often strange intersections between any two or more of them. She offers a new genealogy of literature in modern times, substituting a continuous Dantism for the conventional tale of Victorian realism and historicism challenged by modernist symbolism. She also finds Dante to be the first writer to historicize, fictionalize, and humanize the eternal realm, and therefore the route through which history, secularized fiction, and positivist humanism can be traced to a lost transcendent. Book Debussy

Download or read book Debussy written by Stefan Jarociński and published by . This book was released on 1976 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the first, Debussy's music lent itself to all kinds of convenient critical labels, of which the most fashionable has always been 'impressionist'. In this book the doyen of Polish musicologists examines Debussy's output against the twin backgrounds of his upbringing and of contemporary movements in the other arts besides music. He concludes that the 'impressionist' analogy between music and painting has been too deceptively obvious, and that the movement with which Debussy's art is most deeply impregnated is Symbolism. This he shows by a review of the general aesthetic ferments of this age, by close analysis of Debussy's music, his early works in particular, and by well-directed quotation from Debussy's own many writings on the subject. In the course of his argument he leads the reader down many unexpected bypaths in aesthetics; his book is both an original contribution to musicology and a philosophical meditation on the whole of the art of this unusually fertile and adventurous period.

Book The Serving Library Annual 2019 20

Download or read book The Serving Library Annual 2019 20 written by Francesca Bertolotti-Bailey and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 2019/20 issue of 'The Serving Library Annual' is entirely devoted to the late Italian designer, artist, inventor and polymath Bruno Munari. The core of the annual is the first English translation of 'Obvious Code', the 1971 collection of Munari's own writings, sketches and poems about his own work, published by arrangement with Corraini, who issued the book's anastatic edition in 2017. It includes iconic design objects such as the Abitacolo, ground-breaking artworks such as his 1952 series of hand-made projection slides, and little known rhymes about the art market, as well as an original piece from his "unreadable books" series. In the margins, dozens of artists, designers, writers and curators have been invited to annotate Munari's texts - with a sketch or a quotation, an in-depth analysis, a fragment of conversation, a free association - as a testament to the depth of the influence exerted on international art by an often underacknowledged pioneer, whose visual experiments were so iconic as to become a self-evident part of visual culture, an anonymous invention: an obvious code.

Book Engineer Agitator Constructor the Artist Reinvented

Download or read book Engineer Agitator Constructor the Artist Reinvented written by Jodi Hauptman and published by . This book was released on 2020-05-19 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We regarded ourselves as engineers, we maintained that we were building things ? we put our works together like fitters.? So declared the artist Hannah Höch, describing a radically new approach to artmaking in the 1920s and ?30s. Such wholesale reinvention of the role of the artist and the functions of art took place in lockstep with that era?s shifts in industry, technology, and labor, and amid the profound impact of momentous events: World War I, the Russian Revolution, the collapse of the Austro-Hungarian Empire and the rise of fascism. Highlighting figures such as Aleksandr Rodchenko, Liubov Popova, John Heartfield and Fré Cohen, and European avant-gardes of the interwar years?Dada, the Bauhaus, futurism, constructivism and de Stijl?'Engineer, Agitator, Constructor: The Artist Reinvented' demonstrates the ways in which artists reimagined their roles to create a dynamic art for a new world.0Published in conjunction with a major exhibition, 'Engineer, Agitator, Constructor' marks the transformative addition to MoMA from the Merrill C. Berman Collection, one of the great private collections of political art. Illuminating the essential role of women in avant-garde activities while mapping vital networks across Europe, this richly illustrated book presents the social engagement, fearless experimentation and utopian aspirations that defined the early 20th century, and how these strategies still reverberate today.00Exhibition: MoMA, New York, USA (10.05-12.09.2020).
