Pur di conquistare l’amore della ragazza, il maestro (che nella famosa versione cinematografica ha il volto di Johnny Depp) andrà incontro ad avventure pericolose, avvincenti e, naturalmente, dense di mistero. «Lo spirito che più di tutti tormenta questa regione incantata, e sembra essere il comandante in capo di tutte le forze dell’aria, è lo spettro di un cavaliere con il capo mozzato. Si dice sia il fantasma di un soldato della cavalleria assiana, che finì decapitato da una palla di cannone in una delle tante battaglie della guerra di indipendenza, e che i contadini vedono spesso galoppare a spron battuto nel buio della notte come trasportato sulle ali del vento.» Washington Irving nacque a New York nel 1783. Avviato agli studi giuridici, si mostrò sempre insofferente alla rigidità dell’ambiente accademico preferendo, per la sua formazione, la lettura dei classici inglesi e l’amicizia di uomini di lettere e di teatro. Viaggiatore instancabile, colto e curioso, Irving visse a lungo in Spagna e in Inghilterra e proprio in Europa scrisse la sua opera più importante, The Sketch Book of Geoffrey Crayon, Gent., trasferendo i temi del folklore del vecchio continente nel nuovo mondo. L’opera lo consacrò come primo autore americano a essere annoverato tra i classici della lingua inglese. Morì il 28 novembre del 1859 nei pressi di Tarrytown, vale a dire nello stesso villaggio in cui è ambientato Il mistero di Sleepy Hollow.

They also play out gender relationships, especially when females are excluded, although most histories of the genre ignore the unusual novels that probe the gendering of school stories. When the occasional man wrote about girls schools-as Charles Lamb and H. G. Wells did-he sometimes empowered his female characters, granting them freedoms that he had experienced at school. Women who wrote about boys' schools often gave unusual emphasis to families, and at times, revealed the contradictions in the schoolyard code against telling tales or presented competing versions of masculinity, such as the Christian gentleman versus the self-made man. Sometimes these middle-class white women projected their sense of estrangement onto working class and minority women. Sometimes they wrote school stories that were in dialog with other genres, as when Mrs. Henry Wood wrote a sensation story or, like Louisa May Alcott, they domesticated the boys school story, giving prominence to a female viewpoint.
