Book Giordano Bruno and the Geometry of Language

Download or read book Giordano Bruno and the Geometry of Language written by Arielle Saiber and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-03-02 with total page 401 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Giordano Bruno and the Geometry of Language brings to the fore a sixteenth-century philosopher's role in early modern Europe as a bridge between science and literature, or more specifically, between the spatial paradigm of geometry and that of language. Arielle Saiber examines how, to invite what Bruno believed to be an infinite universe-its qualities and vicissitudes-into the world of language, Bruno forged a system of 'figurative' vocabularies: number, form, space, and word. This verbal and symbolic system in which geometric figures are seen to underlie rhetorical figures, is what Saiber calls 'geometric rhetoric.' Through analysis of Bruno's writings, Saiber shows how Bruno's writing necessitates a crafting of space, and is, in essence, a lexicon of spatial concepts. This study constitutes an original contribution both to scholarship on Bruno and to the fields of early modern scientific and literary studies. It also addresses the broader question of what role geometry has in the formation of any language and literature of any place and time.

Book Women Philosophy and Science

Download or read book Women Philosophy and Science written by Sabrina Ebbersmeyer and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-07-08 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book sheds light on the originality and historical significance of women’s philosophical, moral, political and scientific ideas in Italy and early modern Europe. Divided into three sections, it starts by discussing the women philosophers’ engagement with the classical inheritance with regard to the works of Moderata Fonte, Tullia d'Aragona and Anne Conway. The next section examines the relationship between women philosophers and the new philosophy of nature, focusing on the connections between female thought and the new seventeenth- and eighteenth-century science, and discussing the work of Camilla Erculiani, Margherita Sarocchi, Margaret Cavendish, Mariangela Ardinghelli, Teresa Ciceri, Candida Lena Perpenti, and Alessandro Volta. The final section presents male philosophers’ perspectives on the role of women, discussing the place of women in the work of Giordano Bruno, Poulain de la Barre and the theories of Hobbes and Rawls. By exploring these women philosophers, writers and translators, the book offers a re-examination of the early modern thinking of and about women in Italy.

Book Authority Innovation and Early Modern Epistemology

Download or read book Authority Innovation and Early Modern Epistemology written by Martin McLaughlin and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-05 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Giordano Bruno (1548-1600), who died at the stake, is one of the best-known symbols of anti-establishment thought. The theme of this volume, which is offered as a collection of essays to honour the distinguished Bruno scholar Hilary Gatti, reflects her constant concern for the principles of cultural freedom and independent thinking. Several essays deal with Bruno himself, including an analysis of the Eroici furori, a study of his reception in relation to the group known as the Novatores, and discussions of several important aspects of his stay in England. The authors and texts discussed here are linked by a relentless interest in the question of authority and originality, and they range from literary figures such as Alberti (1404-72), Vasari (1511-74) and the proponents of quantitative verse in sixteenth-century England to controversial philosophers who, like Bruno, were condemned by the Church, such as Tommaso Campanella (1568-1639) and Giulio Cesare Vanini (1585-1619). Taken together, these chapters show how much that was new and revolutionary in early modern culture came from its confrontation with the past. Martin McLaughlin is Agnelli-Serena Professor of Italian at Oxford. Elisabetta Tarantino is a Teaching Fellow in the Department of Italian at the University of Warwick.

Book Tra educazione e carcere il cinema

Download or read book Tra educazione e carcere il cinema written by Annalisa Vio and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2013-06-08 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Download or read book The Art of Religion written by Maarten Delbeke and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-04-01 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bernini and Pallavicino, the artist and the Jesuit cardinal, are closely related figures at the papal courts of Urban VIII and Alexander VII, at which Bernini was the principal artist. The analysis of Pallavicino's writings offers a new perspective on Bernini's art and artistry and allow us to understand the visual arts in papal Rome as a 'making manifest' of the fundamental truths of faith. Pallavicino's views on art and its effects differ fundamentally from the perspective developed in Bernini's biographies offering a perspective on the tension between artist and patron, work and message. In Pallavicino's writings the visual arts emerge as being intrinsically bound up with the very core of religion involving questions of idolatry, mimesis and illusionism that would prove central to the aesthetic debates of the eighteenth century.

Book Essays on Giordano Bruno

Download or read book Essays on Giordano Bruno written by Hilary Gatti and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2010-10-18 with total page 377 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book gathers wide-ranging essays on the Italian Renaissance philosopher and cosmologist Giordano Bruno by one of the world's leading authorities on his work and life. Many of these essays were originally written in Italian and appear here in English for the first time. Bruno (1548-1600) is principally famous as a proponent of heliocentrism, the infinity of the universe, and the plurality of worlds. But his work spanned the sciences and humanities, sometimes touching the borders of the occult, and Hilary Gatti's essays richly reflect this diversity. The book is divided into sections that address three broad subjects: the relationship between Bruno and the new science, the history of his reception in English culture, and the principal characteristics of his natural philosophy. A final essay examines why this advocate of a "tranquil universal philosophy" ended up being burned at the stake as a heretic by the Roman Inquisition. While the essays take many different approaches, they are united by a number of assumptions: that, although well versed in magic, Bruno cannot be defined primarily as a Renaissance Magus; that his aim was to articulate a new philosophy of nature; and that his thought, while based on ancient and medieval sources, represented a radical rupture with the philosophical schools of the past, helping forge a path toward a new modernity.

Book La mia scuola in Sudafrica

Download or read book La mia scuola in Sudafrica written by Mark O'Doherty and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2012-09-22 with total page 108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dear All, All governments in the International Community have a moral and legal obligation to protect and safeguard the UN Convention on the Elimination of all Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW), and the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC). This includes the reproductive rights of women and their right of shaping their gender role in society and family relations. A very important ethical aspect concerning the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC) is that children are not asked whether they want to be born or not; they simply come into this world without being asked. Hence politicians and parents in Africa have to take extra special care that the necessary resources are available concerning children; to uphold the UNCRC. With the global population still increasing by an estimated 80 million people per year, the International Community needs to make a greater effort to implement effective family planning in the world. Especially in developing countries it is often not the woman's choice if she has children. Traditional survival patterns often dictate women to give birth to as many children as they possibly can. The global population has grown from 1 billion in 1800 to 7.8 billion in 2020. It is expected to keep growing, and estimates have put the total population at 8.6 billion by mid-2030, 9.8 billion by mid-2050 and 11.2 billion by 2100. Many nations with rapid population growth have low standards of living, whereas many nations with low rates of population growth have high standards of living. Hence it is imperative to counteract overpopulation, poverty, inequality and forced migration in the world; by implementing effective family planning. Also, a mind-set change is required concerning the ethics of political economy, population and social cohesion - especially by politicians and economists. In particular, how a reduction of population in society can be transformed into an asset - such as greater harmony and happiness in society - due to less competition for space, resources and jobs; and thereby avoiding the rat race. Furthermore, to improve family planning, a Basic Income Guarantee (BIG) must be implemented in the world, so that people can educate themselves about contraceptive methods and obtain them. As in a world where there are no guarantees and as citizens who must be under government rule, we should at least be assured that we will be able to feed, clothe and handle the simplest needs of human beings.
