Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Medieval Sovereignty examines the idea of sovereignty in the Middle Ages and asks if it can be considered a fundamental element of medieval constitutional order. Francesco Maiolo analyzes the writings of Marsilius of Padua (1275/80-1342/43) and Bartolous of Saxoferrato (1314-57) and assesses their relative contributions as early proponents of popular sovereignty. Both are credited with having provided the legal justification for medieval popular government. Maiolo's cogent reconsideration of this primacy is an important addition to current medieval studies.

Book The Problem of Sovereignty in the Later Middle Ages

Download or read book The Problem of Sovereignty in the Later Middle Ages written by Michael Wilks and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2008-07-31 with total page 640 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sovereignty has always been an important concept in political thought, and at no time in European history was it more important than during the perplexed conditions of the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries. Universal government was a fading dream, giving way to the new conception of the national state and the whole basis of political thought was being reorientated by the influx of Aristotelian ideas. Dr Wilks's book is an attempt to clarify the more important problems in the political outlook of the period. He shows that at this time the theologians and literary writers, especially Augustinus Triumphus of Ancona, had built up a complete theory of sovereignty in favour of the papal monarchy, based on a neo-Platonic, Augustinian view of the church as a universal and totalitarian state.

Book The King s Two Bodies

    Book Details:
  • Author : Ernst Kantorowicz
  • Publisher : Princeton University Press
  • Release : 2016-05-10
  • ISBN : 1400880785
  • Pages : 633 pages

Download or read book The King s Two Bodies written by Ernst Kantorowicz and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2016-05-10 with total page 633 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1957, this classic work has guided generations of scholars through the arcane mysteries of medieval political theology. Throughout history, the notion of two bodies has permitted the postmortem continuity of monarch and monarchy, as epitomized by the statement, “The king is dead. Long live the king.” In The King’s Two Bodies, Ernst Kantorowicz traces the historical dilemma posed by the “King’s two bodies”—the body natural and the body politic—back to the Middle Ages. The king’s natural body has physical attributes, suffers, and dies, as do all humans; however the king’s spiritual body transcends the earth and serves as a symbol of his office as majesty with the divine right to rule. Bringing together liturgical works, images, and polemical material, Kantorowicz demonstrates how early modern Western monarchies gradually began to develop a political theology. Featuring a new introduction and preface, The King’s Two Bodies is a subtle history of how commonwealths developed symbolic means for establishing their sovereignty and, with such means, began to establish early forms of the nation-state.

Book Foundations of the Conciliar Theory The Contribution of the Medieval Canonists from Gratian to the Great Schism

Download or read book Foundations of the Conciliar Theory The Contribution of the Medieval Canonists from Gratian to the Great Schism written by Tierney and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2021-12-06 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A major problem which occupied thinkers in the later Middle Ages was the question of the internal structure of the Church and the proper interrelationship of its members. This book is an account of those canonistic theories of Church government which contributed to the growth of the conciliar theory, and which were formulated between Gratian's Decretum (c. 1140) and the Great Schism (1378). It is concerned particularly with the juristic development of the fundamental conciliar doctrine, the assertion that the universal Church was superior to the Church of Rome, with a consequent denial of the Pope's supreme authority. Foundations of the Conciliar Theory is considered by many to be one of those rare books that significantly influenced twentieth century medieval studies. Now again available in a new enlarged edition, it will continue to be an indispensable work for all those interested in Church history and the Middle Ages.
