Book excerpt: Women, Sex, and Marriage in Early Modern Venice is the first study to investigate systematically the moral policies of both Church and State in the age of Counter-Reformation confessionalisation in Venice. Examining ecclesiastical and civil lawsuits related to illicit sex, broken marriage promises and disrupted marriages of artisan and ordinary women and men, Daniela Hacke can convincingly show how central sexual morality was to the patriarchal society of sixteenth and seventeenth century Venice. Drawing on a wide range of archival sources, the author skilfully reconstructs what gender difference meant in daily life, in courtship rituals, marital disputes, and in sexual relations. In the streets and in the courts, women and men fought not only over proper gender behaviour within and outside marriage, but also about the meaning of conjugality and of domestic patriarchy. Neighbours played an active role in mediating between distressed partners and between children and parents. Their interventions and perceptions reveal much about the moral values and the networks of support within a fascinatingly heterogeneous community such as early modern Venice. The study makes important contributions to the fields of gender history, social history and the history of crime and sexuality.

Book excerpt: This well-researched book explains why the Catholic Church continues to teach marital indissolubility and addresses the numerous contemporary challenges to that teaching. It surveys the patristic witness to marital indissolubility, along with Orthodox and Protestant views, as well as historical-critical biblical exegesis on the contested biblical passages. It also surveys the Catholic tradition from the Trent through Benedict XVI, and it examines a Catholic argument that the Catholic Church's teaching can and should change. Then it explores Amoris Laetitia, the papal exhortation from Pope Francis on marriage, and the various major responses to it, with the issue of marital indissolubility at the forefront. Finally, it retrieves Aquinas's theology of marital indissolubility as a contribution to deepening current theological discussions. The author argues that Amoris Laetitia upholds the traditional Catholic teaching that a valid and consummated Christian marriage is absolutely indissoluble, in accord with the teachings of Jesus and the Apostle Paul, as solemnly and authoritatively taught by the Council of Trent and affirmed by later popes and the Second Vatican Council. He says that Amoris Laetitia should be interpreted and implemented in light of the doctrine of marital indissolubility: implementations that undermine this doctrine should be avoided. Levering says that numerous contemporary Catholic theologians and biblical scholars are mistakenly turning the indissolubility of marriage into contingent dissolubility based upon whether the spouses continue to act in loving ways toward each other. The sacrament's gift of objective indissolubility is thereby undermined. Fortunately, the main interpreters of Amoris Laetitia, whose views have been approved by Pope Francis, insist that the Apostolic Exhortation does not change the doctrine of marital indissolubility in any way.

Historian Sir Noel Malcolm takes this document as a point of departure to explore the lives of the entire Bruni family, whose members included an archbishop of the Balkans, the captain of the papal flagship at the Battle of Lepanto--at which the Ottomans were turned back in the Eastern Mediterranean--in 1571, and a highly placed interpreter in Istanbul, formerly Constantinople, the capital of the Eastern Roman Empire that fell to the Turks in 1453. The taking of Constantinople had profoundly altered the map of the Mediterranean. Questo canone che riguarda il divorzio per causa di adulterio, ha una storia e un testo assai complesso. E' considerato il documento piu solenne del magistero ecclesiastico almeno avanti le dichiarazioni del Concilio Vaticano II ed e percio che i teologi fanno a esso riferimento: gli uni per sostenere che il matrimonio e indissolubile, anche ne caso dell'adulterio, gli altri per dire che lo stesso Concilio di Trento non ha voluto definire una simile asserzione. Esiste una monografia del P. Fransen sull'origine e il senso del canone si e pensato di accettare le conclusioni di questo teologo e partendo da queste vedere in quale senso la Chiesa e gli autori cattolici si sentirono legati dal canone tridentino. Ma dopo i primi studi sull'argomento ci si accorse che non tutte le conclusioni del Fransen erano accolte pacificamente e anzi che almeno alcune di esse non mancavano di fondamento; per questo si e ripreso in mano lo studio del canone stesso cercando di utilizzare piu fonti. Questo lavoro e stato reso possibile dalla pubblicazione degli Acta, Diaria, Litterae, Tractatus riguardanti il Concilio pubblicazione curata dalla Societa Goerresiana: cosi il metodo dell'ermeneutica storica qui seguito puo portare a buoni risultati e dare la vera portata di un canone, quale i Padri conciliari vi attribuirono.
