Book The Making of a Conservative Environmentalist

Download or read book The Making of a Conservative Environmentalist written by Gordon K. Durnil and published by Indiana University Press. This book was released on 2001-11-09 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: " Durnil's attack on chlorine is] one of the single boldest environmental policy ideas of the 1990's.... The message is that if someone as conventional and as conservative as Mr. Durnil can latch on to one of the great social transformations of the American century, then so can every other Republican in the country." --New York Times Book Review "This is a serious, thoughtful book. If they would read it, the phoney 'conservatives' now performing in the center ring in Congress might be shamed into mending their ways. --Village Voice Literary Supplement "Here comes a thoughtful, experienced conservative with impeccable Republican credentials a dedicated environmentalist with a different point of view. A thoughtful, readable mandate."--Ken Bode, Moderator, Washington Week in Review

Book Meander

    Book Details:
  • Author : Margaret Wooster
  • Publisher : State University of New York Press
  • Release : 2021-08-01
  • ISBN : 1438484690
  • Pages : 210 pages

Download or read book Meander written by Margaret Wooster and published by State University of New York Press. This book was released on 2021-08-01 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Meander tells the story of the Great Lakes region's experiment in restoring a complicated natural system of flowing water. Drawing on her own experience as a watershed planner, teacher, and Great Lakes activist, Margaret Wooster describes the language, history, and failures of many of our water management policies. She then turns to Buffalo Creek to teach us how the Great Lakes work—from a "hill made of water" to a cut-off oxbow to a buried delta transitioning from two centuries of industrialization. Wooster explores how, on the Niagara Frontier especially, traditional ecological knowledge and Indigenous values were suppressed by colonial rules of settlement. The ecosystem value of physical integrity—or connectivity between upstream and down, surface flow to aquifer, river to land was never fully unpacked. While our management policies often sever them, these connections are key to Buffalo Creek and Great Lakes recovery and resilience. Wooster leaves us with the idea that it is up to us, the people who live along these flows and in their watersheds, to learn as much as we can about these connections and to use our local authorities to "make room for rivers" and protect our planet's circulatory system for future generations.

Book The Earth Charter Ecological Integrity and Social Movements

Download or read book The Earth Charter Ecological Integrity and Social Movements written by Laura Westra and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-06-20 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Earth Charter is a declaration of fundamental ethical principles for building a just, sustainable and peaceful global society, with ecological integrity as a major theme. This book provides a series of analyses of ecological integrity as it relates to the Earth Charter, social movements and international law for human rights. It is shown how the Earth Charter project began as a United Nations initiative, but it was carried forward and completed by a global civil society initiative. The drafting of the Earth Charter involved the most inclusive and participatory process of its time ever associated with the creation of an international declaration. This process is the primary source of its legitimacy as a guiding ethical framework. The Earth Charter was finalized and then launched in 2000 and its legitimacy has been further enhanced by its endorsement by over 6,500 organizations, including many governments and international organizations. In the light of this legitimacy, an increasing number of international lawyers recognize that the Earth Charter is acquiring the status of a soft law document. The book also shows the strong connection between ecological integrity and social justice, particularly in the defence of indigenous people, and includes contributions from both the North and the global South, specifically from Central and South America.

Book excerpt: Nigerian Gods is an enlightening and sobering review of the impact of the introduction of the three main Abrahamic religions on Nigeria's traditional religions, culture and way of life, viewed through the prism of its eleven largest and two of the smallest ethnic groups. Kome Otobo, gives here a factual and acute description and presentation of the main characteristics of the major ethnic groups in Nigeria - historical background and socio-political structures, demography, traditional religions, differing impacts of Judaism, Christianity, Islam, and major occupations and modes of existence - which should serve to propel all to a fuller assessment of the complexities of the directions which a Post-Covid-19 World is tending rapidly, ethnically and racially exploited differences jumping to the fore to question erstwhile dominant political ideologies and political arrangements based on them.

Book Theology and Narrative

    Book Details:
  • Author : the late Hans W. Frei
  • Publisher : Oxford University Press
  • Release : 1993-09-23
  • ISBN : 0195360079
  • Pages : 281 pages

Download or read book Theology and Narrative written by the late Hans W. Frei and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 1993-09-23 with total page 281 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hans W. Frei (1922-1988) was one of the most influential American theologians of his generation. Early in his career he drew attention to the importance of biblical narratives; he helped make Karl Barth once again a creative voice in contemporary theology; and he served as a model of what his colleague, George Lindbeck, has called "postliberal theology." This volume collects ten of Frei's lectures and essays, many of them never before published. Addressing audiences of theologians, biblical scholars, and literary critics, Frei explores the implications of his work for hermeneutics and Christology, and discusses Barth, Schleiermacher, and his own teacher, H. Richard Niebuhr. William Placher has provided an introduction to Frei's life and work, and the volume ends with an essay by George Hunsinger on Frei's significance for theology today. This collection provides an unrivaled introduction to Frei's work.

Book Empirical statistical Downscaling

Download or read book Empirical statistical Downscaling written by Benestad Rasmus E and published by World Scientific Publishing Company. This book was released on 2008-09-23 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Empirical-statistical downscaling (ESD) is a method for estimating how local climatic variables are affected by large-scale climatic conditions. ESD has been applied to local climate/weather studies for years, but there are few — if any — textbooks on the subject. It is also anticipated that ESD will become more important and commonplace in the future, as anthropogenic global warming proceeds. Thus, a textbook on ESD will be important for next-generation climate scientists.
