Book Jazz and Postwar French Identity

Download or read book Jazz and Postwar French Identity written by Elizabeth Vihlen McGregor and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 2016-06-23 with total page 291 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the context of a shifting domestic and international status quo that was evolving in the decades following World War II, French audiences used jazz as a means of negotiating a wide range of issues that were pressing to them and to their fellow citizens. Despite the fact that jazz was fundamentally linked to the multicultural through its origins in the hands of African-American musicians, happenings within the French jazz public reflected much about France’s postwar society. In the minds of many, jazz was connected to youth culture, but instead of challenging traditional gender expectations, the music tended to reinforce long-held stereotypes. French critics, musicians, and fans contended with the reality of American superpower strength and often strove to elevate their own country’s stature in relation to the United States by finding fault with American consumer society and foreign policy aims. Jazz audiences used this music to condemn American racism and to support the American civil rights movement, expressing strong reservations about the American way of life. French musicians lobbied to create professional opportunities for themselves, and some went so far as to create a union that endorsed preferential treatment for French nationals. As France became more ethnically and religiously diverse due immigration from Africa, Asia, and the Caribbean, French jazz critics and fans noted the insidious appearance of racism in their own country and had to contend with how their own citizens would address the changing demographics of the nation, even if they continued to insist that racism was more prevalent in the United States. As independence movements brought an end to the French empire, jazz enthusiasts from both former colonies and France had to reenvision their relationship to jazz and to the music’s international audiences. In these postwar decades, the French were working to preserve a distinct national identity in the face of weakened global authority, most forcefully represented by decolonization and American hegemony. Through this originally African American music, French listeners, commentators, and musicians participated in a process that both challenged and reinforced ideas about their own culture and nation.

Book International Manual of Oncology Practice

Download or read book International Manual of Oncology Practice written by Ramon Andrade De Mello and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2019-10-15 with total page 1162 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cancer is a very aggressive disease and currently it has been considered a challenge to oncologists and cancer patients worldwide. Nowadays, several therapeutic strategies had improved toward last decades. Surgery is many times still the best curative treatment, mainly in early stage disease. However, Radiotherapy and chemotherapy acquired a main role in this scenario. Target therapies were introduced for medical oncology practice and are demonstrating a hallmark of a new era in cancer treatment. More recently, immunotherapy has been considered the novel cornerstone in cancer treatment. The 2nd edition of the International Manual of Oncology Practice (iMOP) emerged after the great success of the iMOP 1st edition as a reference for medical oncologists and medical residents in the field. In this edition, several chapters were revised and its addresses from the molecular issues of cancer sciences to the clinical practice in medical oncology. In addition, multiple choice questions and clinical cases were included in the main chapters in order to improve the reader learning. The book focuses systemic treatments in many areas of medical oncology, such as breast cancer, gastrointestinal, thoracic, urological oncology, head and neck tumors, bone tumors, sarcomas and palliative care. The topics herein discussed will provide the readers a step forward in the medical oncology practice understanding and give facilities for help in cancer patient treatments.

Book Immunologic tumor microenvironment modulators for turning cold tumors to hot tumors

Download or read book Immunologic tumor microenvironment modulators for turning cold tumors to hot tumors written by Xin He and published by Frontiers Media SA. This book was released on 2024-05-24 with total page 195 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cancer immunotherapy is based on using the immune system components to fight tumors, without destroying normal cells. Several immunotherapeutic strategies have been investigated and proposed for the treatment of cancers, including cancer vaccines containing tumor antigens that are used to induce immune responses against tumors, monoclonal antibodies against tumor antigens, and immune checkpoint inhibitors. However, many clinical trials have shown that the use of these methods as monotherapy is ineffective in many cases. Many tumors can resist immunotherapy due to the absence or insufficient infiltration of tumors with CD8+ T cells and hence, are called “cold” or non-inflammatory tumors. Cold tumors are characterized by a lack of infiltrating CD8+ T cells, the presence of anti-inflammatory myeloid cells, tumor-associated M2 macrophages, and regulatory T cells. A combination of other cancer therapeutic approaches, such as chemotherapy or immunotherapy with cancer vaccines, could dramatically enhance the efficacy and, eventually, the outcome of the treatment. Despite some success of the immunotherapy of oncological diseases, cold tumors represent one of the main therapeutic challenges for modern immunotherapy. It can be expected that in the near future, treatment algorithms will be developed to adapt the therapeutic strategies to the immune context of the tumor since treatment with checkpoint inhibitors or vaccines alone is not enough for cold tumors. Therefore, using other therapeutic approaches alongside the existing treatment methods can be more reasonable for cold tumors that do not strongly stimulate the immune system or resist against it. To apply targeted treatments such as the use of small molecules, small peptides, hybrid small molecules, biologically active peptides, non-protein isolates of food products or by-products, and every material that is capable of the disturbing immunosuppressive tumor microenvironment (TME) as an adjuvant therapy can reduce the resistance of cold tumors to immunotherapy which is so-called turning them into “warm” tumors. This research topic aims to cover all outstanding advances in immunology, medical chemistry and biochemistry, pharmacology, food engineering and molecular biology of contemporary molecular drug targets involved in cancer treatment and encompasses the following subjects: • Definition and explanation of cold tumors and challenges ahead toward their treatment • Designing and application of small peptides, small molecules, and other similar materials to overcome suppressive TME and break tumors resistance • Extraction and preparation of bioactive peptides or other components derived from natural resources to make cold tumor barriers fragile • Modifications and alterations leading to overcoming cold tumor resistance against cancer vaccines and ICP inhibitors Manuscripts consisting solely of bioinformatics or computational analysis of public genomic or transcriptomic databases which are not accompanied by robust and relevant validation (clinical cohort or biological validation in vitro or in vivo) are out of scope for this topic.

Book Conservation Across Borders

Download or read book Conservation Across Borders written by Charles C. Chester and published by Island Press. This book was released on 2012-02-13 with total page 281 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Conservationists have long been aware that political boundaries rarely coincide with natural boundaries. From the establishment of early "peace parks" to the designation of continental migratory pathways, a wide range of transborder mechanisms to protect biodiversity have been established by conservationists in both the public and private sectors. Conservation Across Borders presents a broad overview of the history of transboundary conservation efforts and an accessible introduction to current issues surrounding the subject. Through detailed examinations of two initiatives, the International Sonoran Desert Alliance (ISDA) and the Yellowstone to Yukon Initiative (Y2Y), the book helps readers understand the benefits and challenges of landscape-scale protection. In addition to discussing general concepts and the specific experience of ISDA and Y2Y, the author considers the emerging concept of "conservation effectiveness" and offers a comparative analysis of the two projects. The book ends with a discussion of the complex relationships among civil society, governments, and international borders. By considering the history, goals, successes, and failures of two divergent initiatives, the book offers important insights into the field of transborder conservation along with valuable lessons for those studying or working in the field.
