Book Anaerobic Digestion of Solid Waste II

Download or read book Anaerobic Digestion of Solid Waste II written by J. Mata-Alvarez and published by IWA Publishing. This book was released on 2000-05-31 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the last decade much progress has been made in anaerobic digestion of solid waste: advances in research and development, construction of new plants, more favourable legislation. Key features of this progress are reported in these proceedings. While the selected papers cover a wide range of work on 'solid' organic wastes, there is a particular focus on the organic fraction of Municipal Solid Waste (MSW). Many landfills are set to close and there is a significant increase in separate collection of MSW. Biological treatments can maximise recycling and recovery of its components; anaerobic digestion, with its high energy recovery and limited environmental impact, is frequently the most cost-effective of these treatments. The future of anaerobic digestion of solid wastes is increasingly seen in the integration of this unique unit process in overall sustainable waste treatment. In Life Cycle Analysis anaerobic digestion offers several interesting features: energy recovery (a particularly important factor in third world countries); and a significantly lower contribution to global warming. Problems remain (as for all types of wastes treatments), particularly concerning the fate of micro-pollutants and overall end-product quality, but anaerobic digestion offers major potential in the long-term environmental management. These proceedings offer an unrivalled authoritative view of the present and future of anaerobic digestion of solid waste.

Book Decentralised Sanitation and Reuse

Download or read book Decentralised Sanitation and Reuse written by Piet Lens and published by IWA Publishing. This book was released on 2001-03-01 with total page 652 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Adopting a multi-disciplinary approach, Decentralised Sanitation and Reuse places public sanitation in a global context and provides a definitive discussion of current state-of-the-art sanitation technologies. It shows how these technologies can be implemented to integrate domestic waste and wastewater treatment in order to maximize resource recycling in domestic practice. Decentralised Sanitation and Reuse presents technical solutions for on-site collection and transport of concentrated waste streams, and focuses on the compromise between reliability and minimal water wastage. A whole range of available sustainable technologies, both low and high-tech, to treat concentrated (black water) and diluted (grey water) streams are addressed in detail from the fundamental scientific and engineering points of view. Sociological, economic and, particularly, environmental and public health aspects are essential issues within this book. The necessity of new infrastructure implementation and the resulting challenges for a good number of economic branches are illustrated with examples from architecture and town planning. Decentralised Sanitation and Reuse will be an invaluable resource for a wide academic and professional readership active in the fields of environmental protection and public sanitation. Book Small Bioreactors for Management of Biodegradable Waste

Download or read book Small Bioreactors for Management of Biodegradable Waste written by Pranas Baltrėnas and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-06-01 with total page 381 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume discusses how small bioreactors can produce useful biogas and compost from biodegradable waste. The authors identify which biodegradable wastes are optimal for small bioreactors, and how these choices can be used to increase bioreactor productivity. Additionally, readers will learn about how the amount and composition of biogas is estimated, the concentration of biodegradable waste that needs to be supplied to a bioreactor, the development of small bioreactors including the ratio of cost to the obtained benefits, and the nature of biodegradable wastes generated by both small farms and large food industry enterprises. The beginning chapters explain what biodegradable waste is, show how to predict how much waste an enterprise will produce, and elaborate the characteristics of the biogas which is generated from biodegradable waste in small bioreactors. Then the book discusses the types of small bioreactors and how to select the optimal bioreactor for a given case. Bioreactor performance is analyzed on both an economical and production efficiency basis, with experimental results provided on the quantity and quality of the biogas produced. The final chapters address how small bioreactors can be incorporated into small biogas plants, and the potential use of small bioreactors in countries with high demand for alternative energy using the case of Lithuania. The audience for this work includes specialists in biodegradable waste management and utilization enterprises, designers, and academics, researchers and students engaged in environmental engineering.
