Book excerpt: This first monograph of Igor & Marina gathers most important paintings made by the couple over the last twelve years. Classically trained in St. Petersburg, Russia, since 1997 the artists live and work in the United States. Their work is represented by galleries in New York, San Francisco, London. Igor's specialty is a subtle sense of color, a wonderful appreciation for the tactile nature of paint, canvas, other materials and intuition in playing with abstract images. Marina, on the other hand, possesses a remarkable talent for figurative art and reshaping neo-classical images that are based on the appreciation of West European and Russian Old Masters. Igor & Marina uniquely combine contemporary artistic language with historical heritage, inviting the viewer to enter their invented world, and, after that, to a journey through it. Their mastery of painting is imbued with deep humanity and strives for beauty that remains with viewers for a long time.

Book excerpt: Closing the gap between the contemporary Russian novel and the masterpieces of the early Soviet avant-garde, this masterful mixture of prose and poetry, excerpts from private letters and diaries, and quotes from newspapers and NKVD documents, is a unique amalgam of documentary, philosophical novel, and black humor. Revolving around three central characters—a composer; his lover, Vera; and Vera's husband, a naval officer intercepting enemy communications—we are made witness to the inhuman conditions prevailing during the Siege of Leningrad, against a background of starvation and continuous bombing. In their wild attempts to survive, the protagonists hold on to their art, ideals, and sentiments—hoping that these might somehow remain uncorrupted despite the Bolsheviks, Nazis, and even death itself.

Download or read book Living Gender after Communism written by Janet Elise Johnson and published by Indiana University Press. This book was released on 2006-12-12 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How has the collapse of communism across Europe and Eurasia changed gender? In addition to acknowledging the huge costs that fell heavily on women, Living Gender after Communism suggests that moving away from communism in Europe and Eurasia has provided an opportunity for gender to multiply, from varieties of neo-traditionalism to feminisms, from overt negotiation of femininity to denials of gender. This development, in turn, has enabled some women in the region to construct their own gendered identities for their own political, economic, or social purposes. Beginning with an understanding of gender as both a society-wide institution that regulates people's lives and a cultural "toolkit" which individuals and groups may use to subvert or "transvalue" the sex/gender system, the contributors to this volume provide detailed case studies from Belarus, Bosnia, the Czech Republic, Poland, Romania, Russia, and Ukraine. This collaboration between young scholars -- most from postcommunist states -- and experts in the fields of gender studies and postcommunism combines intimate knowledge of the area with sophisticated gender analysis to examine just how much gender realities have shifted in the region. Contributors are Anna Brzozowska, Karen Dawisha, Nanette Funk, Ewa Grigar, Azra Hromadzic, Janet Elise Johnson, Anne-Marie Kramer, Tania Rands Lyon, Jean C. Robinson, Iulia Shevchenko, Svitlana Taraban, and Shannon Woodcock.

Download or read book Drawing Ambience written by Igor Marjanović and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drawing Ambience showcases a selection of drawings from the personal collection of the noted architectural educator Alvin Boyarsky (1928-1990). As chairman of the Architectural Association (AA) in London (1971-1990), Boyarsky accumulated an impressive collection of drawings at a time when the AA produced an extraordinary program of exhibitions and publications rooted in drawing not only as a representational medium but also a form of architecture in its own right. Boyarsky s drawing collection emerged at the confluence of modernism, postmodernism, and other cultural currents worldwide, capturing the work of artists and architects such as Alexander Brodsky and Ilya Utkin, Frank Gehry, Zaha Hadid, John Hejduk, Daniel Libeskind, Mary Miss, OMA, Eduardo Paolozzi, Superstudio, Shin Takamatsu, Bernard Tschumi, and Peter Wilson. The publication features a full-length essay situating Boyarsky s collection in the emergence of architecture as a global discursive discipline as well as close analysis of fifty of the most imaginative, visionary drawings in it. Exquisite reproductions of each of the featured drawings and prints, along with portfolios of limited-edition publications from the AA, are supplemented by close-up and microscopic images, providing an unprecedented opportunity to explore the imaginative spirit of drawing practices central to the magnetic web of conversations in the architectural discourse, both historical and contemporary, including the discipline s renewed interest in the hand as it relates to drawing and making.
