Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Author Jeffrey Cox conducts a thorough and compelling investigation of the Java Sea Campaign, the first major sea battle of the Pacific War, which inflicted huge costs on the Allies and set the stage for Japan's rout across the Pacific and Indian oceans. Few events have ever shaken a country in the way that the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor affected the United States. The Japanese forces then continued to overwhelm the Allies, attacking Malaya with its fortress of Singapore, and taking resource-rich islands in the Pacific in their own blitzkrieg offensive. Allied losses in these early months after America's entry into the war were great, and among the most devastating were those suffered during the Java Sea Campaign, where a small group of Americans, British, Dutch, and Australians were isolated in the Far East – directly in the path of the Japanese onslaught. It would be the first major sea battle of World War II in the Pacific.

Book excerpt: Ever wondered about the connection between psychological and physical illness? We sense that the mind and the body don’t exist in separate spheres, that at some deep level they are fused and interrelate constantly in our daily lives. Finished Business takes our curiosity about this reality to a new level with a passionate focus on two psychosomatic phenomena: fibromyalgia syndrome and an eating disorder. The roots of these conditions are examined in one person’s experience of complex childhood trauma. Employing the interdisciplinary lens offered by the powerful new method of Neuropsychoanalysis, this volume confronts head on the realities of early abuse, lost love, identity dysregulation, and physical illness. Reaching beyond, it forges a means for repair, a healthy autonomy, and an experience of recovery. The memoir of Part One opens up wounds from the past and confronts the demons of childhood. Part Two describes a post-therapy period in which the examined life yields the first fruits of a recovery. Part Three engages some of the most exciting, cutting-edge knowledge of the brain available today and connects critical issues concerning trauma and health with a nascent neuroscience of the whole person. Part Four, titled “Afterthoughts,” deals with memory reconsolidation, epigenetics, dissociation, and the creative unconscious. Finished Business will appeal to those who know the rigors of mind/body challenges, to clinicians, researchers, and indeed, to anyone who has pondered the enigmas of our mesmerizing body/brain/mind existence.

Book Uncomfortable Conversations with a Black Man

Download or read book Uncomfortable Conversations with a Black Man written by Emmanuel Acho and published by Flatiron Books: An Oprah Book. This book was released on 2020-11-10 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: INSTANT NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER An urgent primer on race and racism, from the host of the viral hit video series “Uncomfortable Conversations with a Black Man” “You cannot fix a problem you do not know you have.” So begins Emmanuel Acho in his essential guide to the truths Americans need to know to address the systemic racism that has recently electrified protests in all fifty states. “There is a fix,” Acho says. “But in order to access it, we’re going to have to have some uncomfortable conversations.” In Uncomfortable Conversations With a Black Man, Acho takes on all the questions, large and small, insensitive and taboo, many white Americans are afraid to ask—yet which all Americans need the answers to, now more than ever. With the same open-hearted generosity that has made his video series a phenomenon, Acho explains the vital core of such fraught concepts as white privilege, cultural appropriation, and “reverse racism.” In his own words, he provides a space of compassion and understanding in a discussion that can lack both. He asks only for the reader’s curiosity—but along the way, he will galvanize all of us to join the antiracist fight.

Download or read book Still Summer written by Jacquelyn Mitchard and published by Grand Central Publishing. This book was released on 2007-08-23 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mitchard's 'Still Summer' plunges into terror By Carol Memmott, USA TODAY Secure your life preserver. Tie yourself to the mast. It's late August, but it's still summer, and Jacquelyn Mitchard is taking you on a thrill ride you won't forget. Mitchard made her mark in the literary world in 1996 when TheDeep End of the Ocean was chosen as the first pick for Oprah Winfrey's now-legendary book club. Since then, she has written six other novels, but none matches the suspenseful pitch of Still Summer. It's a tale of terror on the high seas, but this is no Pirates of the Caribbean wannabe. Readers know something terrible is going to happen, but Mitchard ratchets up the suspense by allowing her story to unfold at a leisurely pace. She painstakingly fleshes out her characters, because as readers will discover, their temperaments and personalities are as crucial to the story as the mounting disasters. Tracy Kyle, Holly Solvig and Olivia Montefalco, lifelong friends in their early 40s, charter a yacht and two-man crew for a sailing vacation that will take them from St. Thomas to Grenada. The trip starts out as an innocent adventure in paradise until two accidents in quick succession strand the women without their crew. What else can go wrong? In a word, everything. The engine conks out, the sails are torn, lack of electricity spoils their food and limits their drinking water - and then there's the injury to Holly's leg. Nature's fury, murderous drug dealers and, possibly most deadly of all, their own frailties and secrets are added to the list. Readers will wring their hands with frustration, weep with sadness and second-guess the choices these women make. But since characters must do the bidding of the authors who create them, we can only sit back - or sit on the edge of our seats - and let Mitchard's terror-filled tale wash over us.
