Book Ignition of Nonmetallic Materials by Impact of High Pressure Oxygen III

Download or read book Ignition of Nonmetallic Materials by Impact of High Pressure Oxygen III written by D. Janoff and published by . This book was released on 1991 with total page 15 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The gaseous oxygen pneumatic impact test has been used by NASA to evaluate the suitability of nonmetallic materials in high-pressure oxygen systems. Several studies have been conducted in the past few years to evaluate the repeatability and applicability of the test. These studies showed that the test has an unacceptable degree of variability. It was recommended that new methods be developed for evaluating the suitability of materials for use in high-pressure oxygen systems. A modified pneumatic impact test was developed and evaluated which addresses the problems of the test currently used by NASA. The test system modifications included a view-ported specimen chamber to view ignition, larger volume between the impact valve and the specimen, ability to adjust pressurization time, and a modified specimen size. Test procedure modifications included subjecting the specimen to a single impact (the current NASA test method required 5 impacts per specimen). The ignition properties appeared to be controlled by the autogenous ignition temperatures of the specimen materials. The modified test allowed the prediction of ignitions that have occurred in component tests and in field incidents that the method currently used by NASA would not have predicted. It is recommended that pneumatic impact ignition tests be performed on components in their use configuration, and that thermochemical methods be used for batch/lot qualification of materials.

Book Ignition of Nonmetallic Materials by Impact of High Pressure Oxygen II

Download or read book Ignition of Nonmetallic Materials by Impact of High Pressure Oxygen II written by LJ. Linley and published by . This book was released on 1989 with total page 15 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The gaseous oxygen pneumatic impact test is used to evaluate the suitability of nonmetallic materials for use in high-pressure oxygen systems. The test was evaluated by testing the reactivity of four materials over a range of impact pressures. The evaluation also investigated the effect of valve opening time and other test variables on the frequency of reaction. The variability of the data obtained for each test material was too large for the test method to be capable of distinguishing other than gross differences in the reactivity of materials. No relation was found between this variability and changes in valve opening time and other test variables. The materials studied were found to be unacceptable for use as reference standards. Because of the high variability of the test data, it is recommended that new methods be developed for evaluating the suitability of materials for use in high-pressure oxygen systems.

Book Ignition of Nonmetallic Materials by Impact of High Pressure Gaseous Oxygen

Download or read book Ignition of Nonmetallic Materials by Impact of High Pressure Gaseous Oxygen written by FJ. Benz and published by . This book was released on 1988 with total page 15 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The pneumatic impact test has long been used to screen nonmetallic materials for oxygen service. This method is also used to rank batches or lots of particular materials. A study has been made to evaluate the sources of variability in the test and to determine the mechanism of ignition. The results of the study show that much of the variability in test data observed in the past can be eliminated by better control of system cleanliness, tightening the specifications for the opening time of the high-speed valve, and conducting tests over a wide range of pressures and using the logistic statistical model to analyze the data. Though the mechanism of ignition was not determined conclusively, it is probably heating of the oxygen initially in the test chamber by adiabatic compression; heating of gases trapped in void spaces within the material could also be important. Further research is recommended to determine if batch or lot control has any value and if specimen preparation and conditioning significantly affect the test results.

Book Safety Design for Space Systems

Download or read book Safety Design for Space Systems written by Gary Eugene Musgrave and published by Butterworth-Heinemann. This book was released on 2009-03-27 with total page 988 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Progress in space safety lies in the acceptance of safety design and engineering as an integral part of the design and implementation process for new space systems. Safety must be seen as the principle design driver of utmost importance from the outset of the design process, which is only achieved through a culture change that moves all stakeholders toward front-end loaded safety concepts. This approach entails a common understanding and mastering of basic principles of safety design for space systems at all levels of the program organisation. Fully supported by the International Association for the Advancement of Space Safety (IAASS), written by the leading figures in the industry, with frontline experience from projects ranging from the Apollo missions, Skylab, the Space Shuttle and the International Space Station, this book provides a comprehensive reference for aerospace engineers in industry. It addresses each of the key elements that impact on space systems safety, including: the space environment (natural and induced); human physiology in space; human rating factors; emergency capabilities; launch propellants and oxidizer systems; life support systems; battery and fuel cell safety; nuclear power generators (NPG) safety; habitat activities; fire protection; safety-critical software development; collision avoidance systems design; operations and on-orbit maintenance. - The only comprehensive space systems safety reference, its must-have status within space agencies and suppliers, technical and aerospace libraries is practically guaranteed - Written by the leading figures in the industry from NASA, ESA, JAXA, (et cetera), with frontline experience from projects ranging from the Apollo missions, Skylab, the Space Shuttle, small and large satellite systems, and the International Space Station - Superb quality information for engineers, programme managers, suppliers and aerospace technologists; fully supported by the IAASS (International Association for the Advancement of Space Safety)
