Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Incorporation of particular components with specialized properties allows one to tailor the end product's properties. For instance, the sensitivity, burning behavior, thermal or mechanical properties or stability of energetic materials can be affected and even controllably varied through incorporation of such ingredients. This book examines particle technologies as applied to energetic materials such as propellants and explosives, thus filling a void in the literature on this subject. Following an introduction covering general features of energetic materials, the first section of this book describes methods of manufacturing particulate energetic materials, including size reduction, crystallization, atomization, particle formation using supercritical fluids and microencapsulation, agglomeration phenomena, special considerations in mixing explosive particles and the production of nanoparticles. The second section discusses the characterization of particulate materials. Techniques and methods such as particle size analysis, morphology elucidation and the determination of chemical and thermal properties are presented. The wettability of powders and rheological behavior of suspensions and solids are also considered. Furthermore, methods of determining the performance of particular energetic materials are described. Each chapter deals with fundamentals and application possibilities of the various methods presented, with particular emphasis on issues applicable to particulate energetic materials. The book is thus equally relevant for chemists, physicists, material scientists, chemical and mechanical engineers and anyone interested or engaged in particle processing and characterization technologies.

Book The Effects of Metallized Fuel Composition on the Combustion Characteristics of Solid Fuel Ramjets

Download or read book The Effects of Metallized Fuel Composition on the Combustion Characteristics of Solid Fuel Ramjets written by Adonis Karadimitris and published by . This book was released on 1986 with total page 79 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Experiments investigated the effects of metallized fuel composition on the combustion characteristics of solid fuel ramjets (SFRJ). Metallized fuels were burned in a two dimensional SFRJ motor under conditions similar to actual flight conditions proposed for solid fuel ramjets. Pressure, air inlet temperature and flowrate measurements were taken using an automatic data acquisition system. High speed motion pictures were taken of the interior or the combustor during the burning of the solid fuel through two viewing windows located in the recirculation zone and just prior to the aft mixing chamber where the boundary layer was more fully developed. Tests were conducted at mass fluxes of 0.2 and 0.5 lbm sq in. sec, with pressures ranging from 57 to 200 psia and with a nominal inlet air temperature of 1100 R. Most fuel surfaces had a characteristic shedding of small, unignited flakes. The flakes are thought to be binder material, and were more prevalent at lower pressures. Occasional shedding of large surface layers was observed, especially during motor shutdown. Metallic surface agglomerations appeared to interact strongly with these irregular surface layers. Large magnesium particles exhibited the expected bright ignition characteristics. Boron particles were not observed, apparently because they were smaller than the resolution limits of the motion pictures. (Theses).

Book Fuel Rich Solid Propellant Boron Combustion

Download or read book Fuel Rich Solid Propellant Boron Combustion written by M. K. King and published by . This book was released on 1984 with total page 21 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Single particle boron ignition and combustion models developed in earlier phases of this program have been utilized and extended to treatment of boron cloud ignition, oxidizer depletion effects on cloud combustion time, laminar flame speeds in boron dust clouds, agglomerate ignition, and the effects of halogens, lithium fluoride coatings, and metal coatings on particle ignition. In addition, they have been utilized in a modular combustor model (well-stirred reactor followed by a two-dimensional mixing zone) of boron slurry combustion. Critical deficiencies in knowledge of processes of condensation of various boron oxides/hydroxides have been defined and an experiment to better quantify and understand these processes has been designed. An experimental program for definition of kinetics of boron oxide liquid plus water vapor (important to boron particle ignition) has been carried out. A comprehensive data base of ignition and combustion times for small (10 to 50 micron) boron particles in various wet and dry environments has been developed and a limited experimental study of the effects of LiF coatings on boron ignition performed. Finally, experiments aimed at characterizing dominant processes is boron solid-fuel ramjet combustion, utilizing a windowed slab burner, have been accomplished. (Author).

Book Studies of the Ignition and Combustion of Boron Particles for Air Augmented Rocket Applications

Download or read book Studies of the Ignition and Combustion of Boron Particles for Air Augmented Rocket Applications written by and published by . This book was released on 1974 with total page 106 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The objective of the present work has been to characterize the nature of the primary exhaust from fuel-rich motors containing boron, and to study its ignition and combustion characteristics, especially as compared to the known information for pure boron. Section II of the present report describes (a) the rocket-motor firing program in which the condensed exhaust (CE) from two different composite ammonium perchlorate propellants was collected, and (b) the results of thermodynamic computations for these formulations. Sections III and IV contain the results of the physical (microscopy, density measurement) and chemical analyses of the CE. Section V deals with combustion of the CE. Finally, Sections VI and VII report the results of modeling studies describing the ignition of single boron particles in hot gas streams and propagation of flames in boron-oxygen-nitrogen dust clouds.

Book A Comparison of Solid Fuel Ramjet Flow Characteristics and Combustion Behavior

Download or read book A Comparison of Solid Fuel Ramjet Flow Characteristics and Combustion Behavior written by Brian Andrew Binn and published by . This book was released on 1979 with total page 83 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An experimental investigation was conducted to determine if there is a relationship between the cold flow characteristics of velocity, pressure distribution, and turbulence intensity and the reacting flow performance and combustion characteristics of a solid fuel ramjet. The effects of configuration and air flow changes on the above characteristics were examined. Average regression rates and combustion efficiencies were not significantly affected by changes in configuration. These variations in test conditions significantly affected the center-line turbulence intensity but not the near-wall turbulence intensity in cold flow. The use of bypass resulted in decreases in regression rate and efficiencies for all cases. Attainable performance appears to be most strongly related to near-wall turbulence intensity/mixing and to the amount of fuel reaching the aft mixing chamber. (Author).
