Book excerpt: The Legendary All-Natural Recipes Of The Yoruba Peoples Of Western Nigeria, Africa. The Cultural History and Food Practices of the Yorubas Of West Africa The Yoruba tribe are mostly found in the South Western parts of Nigeria. Many of them can also be found scattered along the coast of West Africa especially in Republic of Benin, Togo, and even Ghana. They also have an active population in Brazil The Yorubas are very civilized, well travelled and fun-loving people given to partying and enjoying the good things of life. Their colourful and epic parties are popularly known as “Owambe”. They are known for “owambe” (lavish parties) thrown to celebrate everything from birthdays to naming ceremonies to weddings to chieftaincy titles to burial ceremonies to house warming parties. At the owambe parties, there is usually a display of the Yoruba culture which includes food. The typical Yoruba food is usually eaten with the fingers because the foods are usually soft or pottage-like. Each of the foods taste and feel different. They are taken in small bits with the fingers and used to mop-up soup or the sauce (which are of different types). The food is eaten with the right hand, not the left. There are usually big jugs of water made available on the table to wash your hands with before and after meals. If you do not want to eat with you fingers for whatever reason, a spoon is the eating utensil of choice. Eating with forks and knives are very uncommon. Whenever you are eating in the presence of someone who is not, it is customary to invite that person to join you. The person without food could be a complete stranger but you will still ask them to come eat. You will say come and eat, or “wa jeun.” That person can actually start eating your food if they are really hungry, or they will say “may it go down well” or “a gba bi re.” Many Yorùbá people wait until after they are completely finished eating the meal before drinking. Not everyone does this but most older people that are more familiar with the cultures and traditions do. They will shovel down their food, and then chug down with a drink in a couple of gulps. Eating or drinking while walking is considered bad manners in the Yorubaland. You never see someone walking down the street munching on peanuts and boli (roasted plantain) or peeling bananas, which are the most popular snacks. Even drinking water while walking is not typical. People who were brought up well are expected to sit down when they eat. Cooking is typically a woman’s job in Yorùbáland though many men can also cook great dishes especially in modern times. Traditionally, men planted the yams and did the back-breaking work while a woman’s job was to cook for the family. It is still the same practice in the villages today. Yorubas are recognized globally for having a well-developed culture including in food and entertainment. In this recipe masterpiece, we will be considering some of the unique culinary inventions of the Yoruba tribe.

In this strikingly novel approach to African Philosophy, the author explores a complementary philosophical trend that goes back to those he calls anonymous traditional African philosophers. Based on their thoughts, he articulates a distinctive variant of the principles, method and imperative of complementarity (Ibu anyi danda) around which he builds his system. He anchors his reflection on such ambient concepts as the joy of being (jide k' iji), fragmentation, wholeness, and future reference.

Book Resolving the Prevailing Conflicts Between Christianity and African Igbo Traditional Religion Through Inculturation

Download or read book Resolving the Prevailing Conflicts Between Christianity and African Igbo Traditional Religion Through Inculturation written by Edwin Anaegboka Udoye and published by LIT Verlag Münster. This book was released on 2011 with total page 410 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For not integrating initially some of the good elements in Igbo culture, many Igbo Christians have double personality - Christian personality and traditional personality. They are Christians on Sundays but traditionalists on weekdays. To combat such an anomalous situation, in imitation of Christ's effort at completing what was lacking in the Jewish religion, author Edwin Udoye proposes radical inculturation. His book equally contains many serious theological reflections such that it recommends itself to both theologians and the scholars researching on the religions of the world. Udoye has therefore made a very significant contribution worthy of commendation to both theological and religious studies.

Book Healing Insanity a Study of Igbo Medicine in Contemporary Nigeria

Download or read book Healing Insanity a Study of Igbo Medicine in Contemporary Nigeria written by Patrick E. Iroegbu and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2010-06-08 with total page 557 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Healing Insanity: A Study of Igbo Medicine in Contemporary Nigeria is an original and in-depth study on endogenous medical system in an African society. It is craftily written and provides solid insight, through case studies and theory, into how insanity affects patients and the society. Particularly, it explores various collective representations and strategies regarding insanity and healing as it examines the healing institutions, healers, and ritual cults. The central question is, given the patterns of healing, how do the Igbo shape the incidence and symptoms of insanity, define its aetiology, and provide healers with culture-specific resources and skills to address this illness? The focus became increasingly centred on bodily semantics and endogenous knowledge systems and practices. Dr. Patrick Iroegbus work is a very valuable and rare study and has appeared at a desirable time. It is, for an African society, a comprehensive study of the many ways Igbo people, in their practical, routinelike attitudes and body-centred experiences, as well as in their more reflective aetiologic knowledge and healing institutions, relate to the phenomenon of insanity, or ara, in the cultural parlance. As the first of its kind, reminiscent of, and assured by, the various remarks of Igbo scholars and leaders at various meetings and discourses, the task this work has set out to accomplish is a very brave one. The authors account of his fieldwork experiences and adopted techniques illustrates his initiation, revealing him as a genuine ethnographer who is a friend of people and at ease with his field. With both the far-seeing and inspiring analysis of Igbo medicine, life, and culture accounted for in the work, the book stands out for ethnographers, teachers, students, leaders, policymakers, and the general public. This is a book that deserves to be read as it shapes the critical path toward understanding ways of healing insanity in a culture-specific context, crosscutting perspectives for a relationship between indigenous healing and the biomedical sphere. Prof. Ren Devisch (Africa Research Centre, University of Leuven) This book is written with a clear purpose for everyone to readto understand and heal insanityand indeed provides a thick piece of cultural philosophy and vernacular of Igbo medicine in hopes of putting cultural wisdom in pursuit of integral health care development. Prof. Pantaleon Iroegbu (Professor of Philosophy, Major-Seminary, Ekpoma, January 2006) To read this book, as I did, is to get the benefit of Dr. Patrick Iroegbus ethnographic insight for an archetypical African healing system in Igboland. It offers a fascinating theory of symbolic release that speaks of African symbolic action and knowledge system. Dr. Paul Komba, Esq. (University of Cambridge)

Book Afro Igbo Mmad and Thomas Aquinas S Imago Dei

Download or read book Afro Igbo Mmad and Thomas Aquinas S Imago Dei written by Venatius Chukwudum Oforka and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2016-06-25 with total page 473 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In our modern and globalised world, the concept of human dignity has gained a haloed status and plays a decisive role in assessing the moral integrity of every human being. It provides a necessary foundation for the on-going human rights struggles. For the idea of human dignity ensures that our ever-growing complicated world wears a human face and that human beings are respected as absolute values in themselves. Afro-Igbo Mmad? and Thomas Aquinas' Imago Dei: An Inter-cultural Dialogue on Human Dignity attempts to expand the discourse on the concept of human dignity, which appears to have been parochially founded on the principles of Western cultures and ideologies. To deparochialise this discourse, it proposes an inter-cultural dialogue towards establishing common principles that define the foundation of human dignity, even when the approaches of diverse cultures to this foundation differ. The Afro-Igbo Mmadu and Thomas Aquinas' Imago Dei is, therefore, a model of such inter-cultural dialogue. It hosts a profound dialogue between the concept of Mmad? among the Igbo people of eastern Nigeria (Africa) and the concept of Imago Dei according to Thomas Aquinas of western European culture. The study discusses the rich values in these cultural concepts and acknowledges them as veritable tools for establishing human dignity as a universal and inalienable character of human beings. It, nonetheless, highlights the low points in these cultures that are discordant with this universal and inalienable character. The dialogue establishes that these two cultures could complementarily enrich one another and in this way mutually augment their shortcomings towards a more globalised and reinforced foundation of human dignity and the defence of the dignity of every individual human being.
