Book Overview of rural poverty in Latin America and the Caribbean

This book was released on 2019-09-12 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Panorama of Rural Poverty in Latin America and the Caribbean 2018, published by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), addresses the important challenges faced by the region in developing its rural territories to achieve the targets of the Sustainable Development Goals by 2030, particularly SDG 1 to end poverty in all its forms everywhere. After many years of progress, poverty and extreme rural poverty in the region have started to increase again. This is worrying news for countries of the region and the international community because, if they do not return to the path of rural poverty reduction, millions of people will be excluded from the opportunity to contribute to the development of their families, communities and countries. The 33 Member States of the United Nations in the region have pledged their commitment to eradicating rural poverty by 2030 and, despite the recent trend, it is still possible to achieve this goal. This report also highlights the persistence of significant gaps between rural and urban areas, which is incompatible with sustainable and equitable development. Of the 169 targets of the Sustainable Development Goals, 132 require actions that must be carried out in rural territories.

This report provides a multi-dimensional analysis of poverty in the country, using both quantitative and qualitative data, as well as examining the impact of government policies and spending on the poor. Policy options and priorities for poverty reduction strategies are identified under the key challenges of building opportunities and assets, reducing vulnerabilities, improving institutions and empowering communities.

Book Using an Asset based Approach to Identify Drivers of Sustainable Rural Growth and Poverty Reduction in Central America

Download or read book Using an Asset based Approach to Identify Drivers of Sustainable Rural Growth and Poverty Reduction in Central America written by Paul Siegel and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2005 with total page 33 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The asset-based approach considers links between households' productive, social, and locational assets; the policy, institutional, and risk context; household behavior as expressed in livelihood strategies; and well-being outcomes. For sustainable poverty reducing growth, it is critical to examine household asset portfolios and understand how assets interact with the context to influence the selection of livelihood strategies, which in turn determine well-being. Policy reforms can change the context and income-generating potential of assets. Investments can add new assets or increase the efficiency of existing household assets, and also improve households' risk management capacity to protect assets. After all is said and done, a household's asset portfolio will determine whether growth and poverty reduction can be achieved and sustained over time. The asset-based framework is amendable to different analytical techniques. Siegel suggests combining quantitative and qualitative spatial and household level analyses (and linked spatial and household level analyses) to deepen understanding of the complex relationships between assets, context, livelihood strategies, and well-being outcomes. This paper--a joint product of the Environmentally and Socially Sustainable Development Vice Presidency and the Rural Development Family, Latin America and the Caribbean Region--is part of a larger effort in the Bank to strengthen analyses and strategies for rural development, and address policy issues and investment priorities"--World Bank web site.

Book Rural Poverty Reduction

Download or read book Rural Poverty Reduction written by Ruben G. Echeverría and published by . This book was released on 1998 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This document proposes a menu of strategic approaches and options for reducing rural poverty in Latin America and the Caribbean, combining the Bank's own experiences and those of other organizations in designing options and instruments for use in programs carried out with the support of the Bank. The proposals made in this document are consistent with a number of strategic initiatives already drawn up or in preparation by the Bank, in particular those aimed at poverty reduction (IDB 1997), promotion of microenterprises (IDB 1996a), development of indigenous communities, rural finance (IDB 1998a), and sustainable agriculture (IDB 1998a). Thus, a number of the alternatives presented here are already being applied by the Bank in several of its activities. Depending on the needs of each country, one or more of the options discussed could be used to define a rural poverty reduction agenda on a case-by-case basis. The flexibility of these approaches makes it possible to apply them to specific problems at the national, regional and even municipal level.
