Book excerpt: This title contains the papers presented at the IFAC Conference on Control Applications in Marine Systems (CAMS 2001), held on 18-20 of July 2001 at the University of Strathclyde in Glasgow, Scotland. More than 120 delegates from over 20 countries attended the conference and discussed and exchanged their research results in marine control systems design and applications. The papers in the proceedings cover a wide range of areas including: autopilot systems; dynamic positioning systems; tracking systems; roll stabilization; robotic off-shore systems; ship navigation systems; ship propulsion; traffic guidance and control systems; engine and machinery control systems; safety and fault tolerant control and training and vehicle simulation. There are also papers on underwater vehicle control and high speed ship control which provide an excellent review of the current work in these areas.

Book Vibro Impact Dynamics of Ocean Systems and Related Problems

Download or read book Vibro Impact Dynamics of Ocean Systems and Related Problems written by Raouf A. Ibrahim and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2009-05-27 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The aim of this International Symposium on Dynamics of Vibro-Impact Systems is to provide a forum for the discussion of recent developments in the theory and industrial applications of vibro-impact ocean systems. A special effort has been made to invite active researchers from engineering, science, and applied mathematics communities. This symposium has indeed updated engineers with recent analytical developments of vibro-impact dynamics and at the same time allowed engineers and industrial practitioners to alert mathematicians with their unresolved issues. The symposium was held in Troy, Michigan, during the period October 1-3, 2008. It included 28 presentations grouped as follows: The first group comprises of nine papers dealing with the interaction of ocean systems with slamming waves and floating ice. It also covers related topics such as sloshing-slamming dynamics, and non-smooth dynamics associated with offshore structures. Moreover, it includes control issues pertaining to marine surface vessels. The second group consists of fifteen papers treats the interaction of impact systems with friction and their control, Hertzian contact dynamics, parameter variation in vibro-impact oscillators, random excitation of vibro-impact systems, vibro-impact dampers, oscillators with a bouncing ball, limiting phase trajectory corresponding to energy exchange between the oscillator and external source, frequency-energy distribution in oscillators with impacts, and discontinuity mapping. The third group is covered in four papers and addresses some industrial applications such as hand-held percussion machines, rub-impact dynamics of rotating machinery, impact fatigue in joint structures.

Book excerpt: The meteoric rise of the photovoltaic (PV) industry is an incredible story. In 2013, Google’s investments in PV systems totaled about half a billion dollars and Warren Buffet, one of the famous investors, invested $2.5 billion in the world’s largest PV system in California. These gigantic investments by major financial players were made only 40 years after the first two terrestrial PV companies, Solarex and Solar Power Corporation, were formed in the USA. Back in 1973, the two companies employed 20 people and produced only 500 watts of PV power. Now, just 40 years later, over a million people work in the PV industry. The worldwide capacity of operating PV electric generators equals the capacity of about 25 nuclear power plants. The PV industry is growing at an annual rate of 30 percent, equivalent to about five new nuclear power plants per year. Today, solar electricity is a significant supplier of electricity needs, to the extent that PV is forcing the restructuring of 100-year-old electric power utilities. This book describes how this happened and what lies ahead for PV power generation.

Book Relaxed Barrier Function Based Model Predictive Control

Download or read book Relaxed Barrier Function Based Model Predictive Control written by Christian Feller and published by Logos Verlag Berlin GmbH. This book was released on 2017 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this thesis, we introduce the novel concept of relaxed barrier function based model predictive control and present a comprehensive theoretical and algorithmic framework for the design, analysis, and implementation of relaxed barrier function based MPC approaches. Instead of treating the underlying optimization as an idealized static map, a key motive of the MPC results and algorithms presented in this thesis is to study the interconnected dynamics of controlled plant and iterative optimization algorithm in an integrated barrier function based framework and to analyze the resulting overall closed-loop system both from a systems theoretic and algorithmic perspective. One of the presented main results is a novel class of barrier function based anytime MPC algorithms that guarantee important properties of the closed-loop system independently of the number of optimization algorithm iterations that are performed at each sampling step. The obtained theoretical results are illustrated by various numerical examples and benchmark tests as well as by an experimental case study in which the proposed class of barrier function based MPC algorithms is applied to the predictive control of a self-driving car.
