Book If We Walk Far Enough We Shall Sometime Come to Someplace

Download or read book If We Walk Far Enough We Shall Sometime Come to Someplace written by Hunter Mattel and published by Hunter Mattel. This book was released on 2022-01-02 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since childhood I've always felt a kinship with Dorothy and her friends. I think that's probably true for many queer people. Dorothy was torn from her colourless world and thrown into the vibrant land of Oz. She was forced to make a journey and on the way found not only herself but a chosen family. The Scarecrow, Lion and Tinman went on a journey to find something that they had inside them all along. The Land of Oz and it's inhabitants have always had a very special place in my heart and have given me great comfort through hard times. It has inspired me to write this collection of poems that I hope you will enjoy.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It's the summer of 1983. Ronald Reagan is in the White House, Princess Leia is on magazine covers, and Thea Knox is on the road. Fresh out of college, Thea is driving solo from California to New York. Her plan is to house-sit for her parents for the summer, but they sell her childhood home on a whim, leaving Thea (once again) to her own devices. She takes a detour to visit her Aunt Wendy in Merdale, a college town nestled in the Kansas prairie. Unlike Dorothy, Thea's adventure begins when she arrives in Kansas. Thea is immediately surrounded by her aunt's group of friends, including Julie, a bookstore owner; Nick, Julie's carpenter boyfriend; Bob, a stoner wildlife rehabilitator; and Amira, a lawyer who works with runaway girls. When she finds herself in love at first sight with Jimmy Ward, a local with a hazy past, Thea decides to extend her stay. Not everyone welcomes her into the fold, however, and Thea's own past--including her distant best friend and erstwhile boyfriends on either coast--is nipping at her heels. When she discovers a terrible secret that could upend Jimmy's world, the spell of happiness she has woven in this unlikely place threatens to break. This compelling coming-of-age novel explores the search for identity, love, friendship, and home, and celebrates the magic and mystery that exist in even the most ordinary places.

Together, Dorothy and her friends the Scarecrow, the Tin Woodman, and the Cowardly Lion set off on a fantastic journey down the yellow brick road in search of the wonderful Wizard. To celebrate the hundredth anniversary of the publication of this classic American tale, Michael Hague re-illustrated the jacket, which, along with the book's cover, has been newly designed. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A wife and medical professional reflects on the loss of her husband in a series of reflections that reveal the emotional stages of grief and healing. Although grief and loss are universal human conditions, the idea of losing those we love is still greatly feared, largely undiscussed, and certainly not prepared for. It is no wonder people feel alone and isolated in their feelings and thoughts when loss comes to them. Longtime nurse and Red Cross volunteer Susan Beth Hassmiller is no stranger to death. Not only has she experienced the suffering of death alongside her patients, but she was blindsided by the physical and emotional toll of loss in her personal life when her husband was fatally injured in an accident. Resetting is written in a daily diary format in which Susan opens a very private window to the actual feelings and thoughts she lived through during her grief process. Raw and gripping, Resetting reveals a profound understanding of the human experience of death. By sharing her perspective as a wife, widow and medical professional, Susan helps those who going through grief gain a new perspective and a greater understanding of death, while also offering ideas on how to help those who are experiencing bereavement—from words to say to providing support.

Book Class Clowns

    Book Details:
  • Author : Jonathan A. Knee
  • Publisher : Columbia University Press
  • Release : 2016-11-29
  • ISBN : 0231543336
  • Pages : 289 pages

Download or read book Class Clowns written by Jonathan A. Knee and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2016-11-29 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The past thirty years have seen dozens of otherwise successful investors try to improve education through the application of market principles. They have funneled billions of dollars into alternative schools, online education, and textbook publishing, and they have, with surprising regularity, lost their shirts. In Class Clowns, professor and investment banker Jonathan A. Knee dissects what drives investors' efforts to improve education and why they consistently fail. Knee takes readers inside four spectacular financial failures in education: Rupert Murdoch's billion-dollar effort to reshape elementary education through technology; the unhappy investors—including hedge fund titan John Paulson—who lost billions in textbook publisher Houghton Mifflin; the abandonment of Knowledge Universe, Michael Milken's twenty-year mission to revolutionize the global education industry; and a look at Chris Whittle, founder of EdisonLearning and a pioneer of large-scale transformational educational ventures, who continues to attract investment despite decades of financial and operational disappointment. Although deep belief in the curative powers of the market drove these initiatives, it was the investors' failure to appreciate market structure that doomed them. Knee asks: What makes a good education business? By contrasting rare successes, he finds a dozen broad lessons at the heart of these cautionary case studies. Class Clowns offers an important guide for public policy makers and guardrails for future investors, as well as an intelligent exposé for activists and teachers frustrated with the repeated underperformance of these attempts to shake up education.

Book The Song of Significance

Download or read book The Song of Significance written by Seth Godin and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2023-05-30 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A soulful re-envisioning of what work and leadership can be, from the visionary mind of renowned author and thought leader, Seth Godin The Song of Significance is a rousing contemplation on work: why it is the way it is, why it’s gotten so bad, what all of us–especially leaders–can do to make it better. Economic instability and the rise of remote work have left us disconnected and disengaged. Alarmed managers are responding with harsh top-down edicts, layoffs, surveillance and mandatory meetings. Workers are responding by quiet quitting and working their wage. But it doesn't have to be this way. Through 144 provocative stanzas, legendary business author Seth Godin gets to the heart of what ails us; he shows what’s really at the root of these trends, and challenges us to do better in ways that matter. The choice is simple. We can endure the hangover of industrial capitalism, keep treating people as disposable, and join in the AI-fueled race to the bottom. Or we come together to build a significant organization that enrolls, empowers, and trusts everyone to deliver their best work, no matter where they are. This is a book to share with bosses and co-workers, to discuss and put to action. No matter what our role, it’s within our power to change. Because, as Godin writes, “Humans aren’t a resource. They are the point.”

Book These Precious Days

Download or read book These Precious Days written by Ann Patchett and published by HarperCollins. This book was released on 2021-11-23 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The beloved New York Times bestselling author reflects on home, family, friendships and writing in this deeply personal collection of essays. "The elegance of Patchett’s prose is seductive and inviting: with Patchett as a guide, readers will really get to grips with the power of struggles, failures, and triumphs alike." —Publisher's Weekly “Any story that starts will also end.” As a writer, Ann Patchett knows what the outcome of her fiction will be. Life, however, often takes turns we do not see coming. Patchett ponders this truth in these wise essays that afford a fresh and intimate look into her mind and heart. At the center of These Precious Days is the title essay, a surprising and moving meditation on an unexpected friendship that explores “what it means to be seen, to find someone with whom you can be your best and most complete self.” When Patchett chose an early galley of actor and producer Tom Hanks’ short story collection to read one night before bed, she had no idea that this single choice would be life changing. It would introduce her to a remarkable woman—Tom’s brilliant assistant Sooki—with whom she would form a profound bond that held monumental consequences for them both. A literary alchemist, Patchett plumbs the depths of her experiences to create gold: engaging and moving pieces that are both self-portrait and landscape, each vibrant with emotion and rich in insight. Turning her writer’s eye on her own experiences, she transforms the private into the universal, providing us all a way to look at our own worlds anew, and reminds how fleeting and enigmatic life can be. From the enchantments of Kate DiCamillo’s children’s books (author of The Beatryce Prophecy) to youthful memories of Paris; the cherished life gifts given by her three fathers to the unexpected influence of Charles Schultz’s Snoopy; the expansive vision of Eudora Welty to the importance of knitting, Patchett connects life and art as she illuminates what matters most. Infused with the author’s grace, wit, and warmth, the pieces in These Precious Days resonate deep in the soul, leaving an indelible mark—and demonstrate why Ann Patchett is one of the most celebrated writers of our time.
