Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A bold retelling of the history of lying in medieval and early modern Europe Is it ever acceptable to lie? This question plays a surprisingly important role in the story of Europe's transition from medieval to modern society. According to many historians, Europe became modern when Europeans began to lie—that is, when they began to argue that it is sometimes acceptable to lie. This popular account offers a clear trajectory of historical progression from a medieval world of faith, in which every lie is sinful, to a more worldly early modern society in which lying becomes a permissible strategy for self-defense and self-advancement. Unfortunately, this story is wrong. For medieval and early modern Christians, the problem of the lie was the problem of human existence itself. To ask "Is it ever acceptable to lie?" was to ask how we, as sinners, should live in a fallen world. As it turns out, the answer to that question depended on who did the asking. The Devil Wins uncovers the complicated history of lying from the early days of the Catholic Church to the Enlightenment, revealing the diversity of attitudes about lying by considering the question from the perspectives of five representative voices—the Devil, God, theologians, courtiers, and women. Examining works by Augustine, Bonaventure, Martin Luther, Madeleine de Scudéry, Jean-Jacques Rousseau, and a host of others, Dallas G. Denery II shows how the lie, long thought to be the source of worldly corruption, eventually became the very basis of social cohesion and peace.

Book After 50 Years of Ministry

Download or read book After 50 Years of Ministry written by Bob Russell and published by Moody Publishers. This book was released on 2016-05-13 with total page 245 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “If I had my entire life to live over, I’d choose to be a preacher again. It’s been extremely rewarding and gratifying. But I could do ministry a lot better if given a second try. As I look back on my forty years at Southeast Christian Church in Louisville, KY, I wish I had a mulligan. This book lists seven things I’d do differently and seven I’d do about the same. They are written in hopes they’ll be a source of encouragement for those growing weary and losing heart. I pray my observations will inspire others to conclude, ‘If he can do it, I can, too.’ In this book I share both the joys and sorrows of my ministry, both the successes and failures. I’m going to be as transparent as possible in hopes that it will encourage ministers to stand firm in the faith and be faithful unto death. If just one minister is motivated to pick up the sword of the Spirit and re-enter the battle, it will be well worth the effort.” — Bob Russell

Book The Road between Us The Elder and the Atheist Two Spiritual Journeys

Download or read book The Road between Us The Elder and the Atheist Two Spiritual Journeys written by Tom Saunders and published by Covenant Books, Inc.. This book was released on 2021-09-08 with total page 137 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tom and Jason met over twenty years ago under circumstances that should have severed any chance they would develop any kind of a personal relationship, let alone a close friendship. Yet their paths continued to cross, and over time, the answer to why this happened would be made very clear to both of them and hopefully become a lesson for many others as well. Jason believed in science. He thought scholarship and the human capacity for learning and reason could provide every answer about life and the human condition; however, there was a tiny ember of belief he dismissed many years earlier that always remained... Tom believed in God, to what extent he wasn’t even sure. Jason grew up in a very religious family. Tom hardly went to church at all but believes Jesus is God’s Son and died to make salvation available to all that would receive the gift He offers, but he always struggled with the orthodoxy taught by religion and tradition... Jason became a business owner and the founder and president of the Mid-Michigan Atheist and Humanist Group. Tom became a chaplain and an elder (pastor) after more than twenty-two years of military service. This book is about the unlikely friendship that changed the course of their lives and the worldviews of both Jason and Tom, a story of two people with completely different trajectories for their lives that converge to teach all of us that we don’t have to be of like minds, come from the same backgrounds, or even share the same values to not just get along but to be close friends. This book illustrates the value of thoughtful listening and mutual respect and how, when put into practice, these attributes make it possible to learn something about ourselves, what we believe, and why we believe it. Share this journey with Jason and Tom with an open heart and mind, and chances are, you will discover something about yourself along the way...

Book The Plan We Need for Security Peace and Justice

Download or read book The Plan We Need for Security Peace and Justice written by George Skoglund and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2008-06 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Our search for security, peace, and justice continues to be an individual and a collective challenge. The Old Testament experiences of the patriarch Job and the New Testament experiences of the apostle Paul provide a framework for understanding the hope that enriches our lives under God's care. The plan we need recognizes that we have choices to make. We have decisions that influence the direction of our lives. To find security, peace, and justice, we need a plan to form and keep a right relationship with God. When we lose control over the decisions that set security, peace, and justice in our lives, we can feel like a pile of broken pieces. To have security, peace, and justice, we need to live in fellowship with God. When our purpose and direction in life meet God's requirements, we please God. With Jesus Christ as our Savior and the Holy Spirit as our Helper, God provides the support we need to find rest and renewal. The foundation of our happiness now and our hope for the future is our salvation and the joy of sharing our beliefs with others. When our thoughts and actions are in keeping God's will for us, we can access the possibilities and power that God makes available to us as mature members in God's family. This book is for anyone who feels disconnected from God. For people dealing with loneliness, fear, despair, and anger, "The Plan We Need for Security, Peace, and Justice" describes a systematic way to become a functioning part of the body of Christ and to complete the connection with God.

Book Dictionary of the Old Testament Wisdom Poetry and Writings

Download or read book Dictionary of the Old Testament Wisdom Poetry and Writings written by TREMPER LONGMAN III and published by Inter-Varsity Press. This book was released on 2020-05-21 with total page 1581 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Old Testament books of wisdom and poetry carry themselves differently from those of the Pentateuch, the histories or the prophets. The divine voice does not peal from Sinai, there are no narratives carried along by prophetic interpretation nor are oracles declaimed by a prophet. Here Scripture often speaks in the words of human response to God and God's world. The hymns, laments and thanksgivings of Israel, the dirge of Lamentations, the questionings of Qohelet, the love poetry of the Song of Songs, the bold drama of Job and the proverbial wisdom of Israel all offer their textures to this great body of biblical literature. Then too there are the finely crafted stories of Ruth and Esther that narrate the silent providence of God in the course of Israelite and Jewish lives. This third Old Testament volume in IVP's celebrated "Black Dictionary" series offers nearly 150 articles covering all the important aspects of Job, Proverbs, Ecclesiastes, Psalms, Song of Songs, Lamentations, Ruth and Esther. Over 90 contributors, many of them experts in this literature, have contributed to the 'Dictionary of the Old Testament: Wisdom, Poetry and Writings'. This volume maintains the quality of scholarship that students, scholars and pastors have come to expect from this series. Coverage of each biblical book includes an introduction to the book itself as well as separate articles on their ancient Near Eastern background and their history of interpretation. Additional articles amply explore the literary dimensions of Hebrew poetry and prose, including acrostic, ellipsis, inclusio, intertextuality, parallelism and rhyme. And there are well-rounded treatments of Israelite wisdom and wisdom literature, including wisdom poems, sources and theology. In addition, a wide range of interpretive approaches is canvassed in articles on hermeneutics, feminist interpretation, form criticism, historical criticism, rhetorical criticism and social-scientific approaches. The 'Dictionary of the Old Testament: Wisdom, Poetry and Writings' is sure to command shelf space within arm's reach of any student, teacher or preacher working in this portion of biblical literature.

Book Morning and Evening Meditations from the Word of God

Download or read book Morning and Evening Meditations from the Word of God written by Michael J. Akers and published by WestBow Press. This book was released on 2014-03-18 with total page 768 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are many devotional books available containing brief, daily inspirations that benefit all who read them. This book is different in two respects. The first is obvious: it contains two readings per day—732 in all. The second, more important difference is that the author wanted to do more than offer inspiration; this would make this book no different than so many others. The messages in the book are study sketches in that the content is not only inspirational, but also educational, challenging, and encouraging. Most of these writings were based on author Michael J. Akers’s teaching of adult Bible studies for more than thirty years and learning what really brought adults to want to deepen their knowledge and application of the Word of God.
