Book Watching the Door

Download or read book Watching the Door written by Kevin Myers and published by Catapult. This book was released on 2009-04-01 with total page 287 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Kevin Myers was a young, wide-eyed, and naive outsider thrust into the thick of the conflict in Northern Ireland as it teetered on the brink of civil war. Quickly absorbed into the local community and privy to the secrets of both the Protestant and Catholic paramilitaries, Myers gained a unique perspective into both sides of the sectarian violence. Devoid of any political agenda, Myers describes the streets of Belfast at its bloodiest with searing clarity, capturing every inch of the city's disturbing violence. Flirting with death at every turn, Myers comes of age as the world around him falls apart, fueled by the psychotic rage, senseless murder, and unrelenting terror that surround Northern Ireland's loyalist gangs, paratroopers, police force, and, of course, average citizen. Part unofficial history, part personal memoir, Watching the Door is raw, provocative, and darkly funny, offering an unbridled account of sex, death, and violence in Northern Ireland by one of its most dynamic witnesses.

Book excerpt: NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER Based on a decade of research and reporting--as well as access to the Replacements' key principals, Paul Westerberg and Tommy Stinson--author Bob Mehr has fashioned something far more compelling than a conventional band bio. Trouble Boys is a deeply intimate portrait, revealing the primal factors and forces that shaped one of the most brilliant and notoriously self-destructive rock 'n' roll bands of all time. Beginning with riveting revelations about the Replacements' troubled early years, Trouble Boys follows the group as they rise within the early '80s American underground. It uncovers the darker truths behind the band's legendary drinking, showing how their addictions first came to define them, and then nearly destroyed them. A roaring road adventure, a heartrending family drama, and a cautionary showbiz tale, Trouble Boys has deservedly been hailed as an instant classic of rock lit.

With accessible, easy-to-understand language, Nutt ensures that readers recognize why alcohol can have such a negative influence on our bodies and our society. In the vein of This Naked Mind,Drink? isn't preachy; it simply gives readers clear, evidence-based facts to help them make the most informed choices about their consumption.

Book Living Underneath Tables and Other Modern Fables

Download or read book Living Underneath Tables and Other Modern Fables written by Gunnar Jensen and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2012-08-23 with total page 165 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I always wanted to write a book where I call the general populace a bunch of limp dicks and desiccated pussies; however, my editor refused to publish anything so honest. Luckily, I am the master of work-arounds. So, in the guise of modeling hard-dickitude and wet-pussiness, I managed to trick my editor into publishing this memoir by concealing my recriminations inside stories. Follow me as I take Kerouac's On the Road beneath a table. Oddly enough, there were nearly as many drug dealers, sexpots, and weirdoes in an "empty" room at a reception hall as there were if you had hitchhiked across America in the late 1940s. While hiding from both management and low-lifes alike, I secreted myself behind the white shroud of a skirted table. Beneath this table, I found friendship, love and a workable philosophy on how to live life. Lying prone beneath a rectangular skirted table, I learned, ironically enough, how to think outside the box. Also, I've never actually had an editor.

Book A Driver s Manual CAR For Drunk Drivers

Download or read book A Driver s Manual CAR For Drunk Drivers written by Maurice "Mo" Murray and published by Author House. This book was released on 2013-09-30 with total page 143 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: CONCISE CAR® the rubrics of CAR® are similar to other Cognitive Apprenticeship Methodology's: "Watch It Do It Know It." CAR's unique power to facilitate recovery is derived by adding the ingredients of "The Way of Analogy" and "The Concept of the Singular." You might want to start by first reading Chapter 5 in "Bingo": the chair's fixed, relax and sit in it as a way to preempt any confusion about how "The Way of Analogy" is being used in "Relationship Associations." Here is the traditional (Thomas Aquinas) "Way of Analogy": Red is Red: and yet a horse is Red, with a "horsey" Redness. CAR® melds this with "The Concept of the Singular" [i.e. Remember Philosophy 101. the Universal Chair of the Greeks was the perfect chair; then came "the Particular" chair (Lounge Chairs); then came "the Singular" chair (your Dad's old Morris chair with the cigar burns on the right arm)] to get its synergism. CAR® is a "Singular Analogous Relationship Driven" Recovery modality and as such, less easily defined than experienced. CAR® methodology is already at work "within" you even before you start to read these books. You already know (you are ultimately aware) that you are "within the answer." "The 'Good News' is... you are in Recovery now!" This is proclaimed at the beginning of all three books. "The first step in the acquisition of wisdom is silence, the second listening, the third memory, the fourth practice, the fifth teaching others." Solomon Ibn Gabriol Respectfully submitted... Book Domesticating Drink

  • Author : Catherine Gilbert Murdock
  • Publisher : JHU Press
  • Release : 2003-03-04
  • ISBN : 0801870224
  • Pages : 381 pages

Download or read book Domesticating Drink written by Catherine Gilbert Murdock and published by JHU Press. This book was released on 2003-03-04 with total page 381 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Selected by Choice Magazine as an Outstanding Academic Title The period of prohibition, from 1919 to 1933, marks the fault line between the cultures of Victorian and modern America. In Domesticating Drink, Murdock argues that the debates surrounding alcohol also marked a divide along gender lines. For much of early American history, men generally did the drinking, and women and children were frequently the victims of alcohol-associated violence and abuse. As a result, women stood at the fore of the temperance and prohibition movements and, as Murdock explains, effectively used the fight against drunkenness as a route toward political empowerment and participation. At the same time, respectable women drank at home, in a pattern of moderation at odds with contemporaneous male alcohol abuse. During the 1920s, with federal prohibition a reality, many women began to assert their hard-won sense of freedom by becoming social drinkers in places other than the home. Murdock's study of how this development took place broadens our understanding of the social and cultural history of alcohol and the various issues that surround it. As alcohol continues to spark debate about behaviors, attitudes, and gender roles, Domesticating Drink provides valuable historical context and important lessons for understanding and responding to the evolving use, and abuse, of drink.
