Book excerpt: The true story of how a group of talented volleyball players learned to put their egos aside, became a team, and changed the sport of volleyball forever. In the early 1980s, a golden generation of volleyball players joined the U.S. men’s national team. With the Olympics coming to Los Angeles in 1984, the pressure was on to build a winning program around these exceptional athletes. But could a group of individuals put aside their egos and play as a true team to achieve Olympic gold in their home country? In If Gold Is Our Destiny: How a Team of Mavericks Came Together for Olympic Glory, Sean P. Murray shares the incredible story of how a group of free-spirited players and their demanding coach captured the heart of a nation and became one of the greatest indoor volleyball teams of all time. As the team struggled leading up to the Olympics, head coach Doug Beal mandated a highly controversial three-week Outward Bound hike across one hundred miles in the Canyonlands and Abajo Mountains in Utah. Murray details all the internal strife and heartwarming triumphs from this unprecedented trip, as players and coaches learned to cooperate and trust one another. He reveals how the team used this newfound trust to implement an innovative approach to volleyball that changed not only their success on the court but the sport itself on a global scale. Featuring original interviews with players, coaches, and staff, along with a foreword by three-time gold medal champion Karch Kiraly, If Gold Is Our Destiny delivers an inside look at what it takes for a group of talented individuals to overcome their differences, build a culture of excellence, and become the best in the world.

Download or read book Go to Your Destiny written by Alvin Harrison and published by Hyperion. This book was released on 2000-12-01 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1995, Identical Twin Brothers Calvin and Alvin Harrison were living in their car; within a year, they were competing for spots on the United States Olympic Track and Field Team. And their dream was only beginning. Alvin won an Olympic gold medal in the 4 x 400-meter relay in 1996, and four years later in Sydney, Australia, the identical twin brothers each ran a leg on the gold-medal-winning 4 x 400-meter relay team. All told, the Harrisons have won three Olympic gold medals and a silver despite a shared life marked by tragedy and misfortune. Together, Alvin and Calvin persevered and are now poised to become the greatest tandem in the history of international track and field. Their story starts in an Orlando hospital room with a teenage mother giving birth to premature twins. Alvin Harrison came first, followed by his identical twin brother, Calvin, two minutes later. By the time Calvin passed into the world, doctors had pronounced his older brother dead. At that instant, and with a cry Calvin later described as a call to God, Alvin started breathing again and a remarkable story of courage, tenacity and spirit began to take shape. They recall "playing with the wind" as children and waking up with their grandmother Lucille, praying over them. Despite a house full of uncles, aunts, sisters and the occasional parent, Alvin and Calvin were drawn to the strong presence of their grandmother, who passed her spirituality on to them. Their "visions" of future events and situations have been a part of their lives for as long as they can remember, their ability to communicate with each other non-verbally is as natural to them as walking or talking. Though they would bounce between Florida and Northern California for more than 10 years starting at age 12, Alvin and Calvin never lost touch with each other. And once they were able to finally live with their father, Albert, in Salinas, California, he provided stability and support that they hadn't known while growing up in a crime-ridden Orlando ghetto. When their father returned to Florida, the twins stayed in California and became high school track and field phenoms despite living on their own and spending most days looking for a place to sleep. Then in 1995, while living in their car on a hill in the Northern California town of Hollister for more than three months, Alvin and Calvin read the entire Bible. When they emerged, the brothers decided to make a run for the 1996 United States Olympic Team. Incredibly, after more than a year of inactivity, Alvin qualified for the team with Calvin missing by only 7/1000ths of a second. Four years later -- and against the backdrop of the tragic loss of loved ones -- the brothers qualified for the 2000 U.S. Olympic Team. Alvin won a silver medal in the 400 meters, and the brothers brought home gold with each running a leg on the 4 x 400-meter relay. Alvin and Calvin Harrison now tell the story of a run -- equal parts inspiring and unbelievable -- that started at birth and may well end as the greatest duo in the history of international track and field.

The Lord has given us freewill, but not every path will lead to the desired outcome. How do we guard our paths? Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This would be easier if I were writing about someone else. Then I could change it, fatten up the thin parts and leave out the dull ones, turning them twice like frayed collars and cuffs, making them over into something more romantic than they really were, but then the remembering would be neither so painful, nor so sweet. I suppose you can't have one without the other. . . Evangeline Glennon knows plenty about life's highs and lows. Still, she feels lucky, surrounded as she is by people who care deeply: Papa, who's never lost his Irish brogue or the twinkle in his eye; endlessly practical, generous Mama; and steadfast best friend Ruby. Romance would be too much for a girl like Eva to expect. Then again, love has a tendency to find those who aren't looking for it. . . Out of a clear blue sky, a dashing young aviator makes an impossibly gentle landing in Papa's Oklahoma wheat field. After taking her up in his plane, "Slim" leaves Eva with an exhilarating new perspective--and an even more precious gift that changes her forever. But that's only the beginning. The world is changing, too--and only the strongest in body and spirit will weather what is to come. Now, while tracing from afar the progress of the brave young barnstormer she knew so briefly, Eva stitches her heart and soul into intricate quilts whose images take extraordinary form from the heartbreak and joy of parallel lives. . . "A lyrical, lush, and lovely novel from a clever and talented new writer." --Jane Green "A gripping, heartwarming story. . .complete with fascinating characters and a page-turning plot." --Dorothy Garlock Marie Bostwick Skinner was born and raised in the Northwest.
