Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The date, the time, the place are obscure, but of what we can be certain is that the Beggar Poet is in no position to call himself a "noble person" or a "superior man." He lives his life as would a mendicant writer or a solitary seeker--one who has tasted love, joy, and the depths of human despair. Like most of us, really. In fashioning his life to the changes of the I Ching, each of the sixty-four hexagrams, he is faced with challenges and riddles, thresholds to broach, subtle variations of insight from which, by living through them sincerely and with an unrelenting gaze, he can be said to be living an evolving revelation of consciousness. Anyone who has taken time to turn the pages of the I Ching will realize that as well as discovering uplifting and spiritually profound moments, there are those we truly fear and spend our lives trying to avoid. Instead of trying to maintain constantly a higher spiritual eminence--a perfect sense of proportion--we come to know by experience, if Heaven wills and for only brief interludes in an otherwise fulfilling life, its opposite, making our luminous spiritual flights all the more poignant and precious.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book argues that the most profound and far-reaching effects of Buddhism on Chinese culture occurred at the level of practice, specifically in religious rituals designed to cure people of disease, demonic possession, and bad luck. This practice would leave its most lasting imprint on the liturgical tradition of Taoism. In focusing on religious practice, the book provides a corrective to traditional studies of Chinese religion, which overemphasize metaphysics and spirituality.

Book excerpt: Literary Nonfiction. Film. Religion & Spirituality. How does one participate (read and write) from within the membranous precinct between our multiple bodies, from within the larger rhizomic field of resonances, where much is sounding and also unsounded? By employing various "divinatory generators" (instructions, methods, trances), the essays in IDEAL SUGGESTIONS: ESSAYS IN DIVINATORY POETICS genuflect to practices that celebrate engagement with uncertainty while cultivating strategies through which one might collaborate with both rupture and rapture.

Appendices provide lists of deities and spirits and of numerous identified ritual remedies and supports that are an essential element of a still vibrant Tibetan culture.
Download or read book Augury written by Eric Pankey and published by Milkweed Editions. This book was released on 2017-11-14 with total page 107 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From award-winning poet and author of Crow-Work, a collection exploring the presence of the divine in the seemingly ordinary. The ancient Romans practiced augury, reading omens in bird’s flight patterns. In the poems of Augury, revelation is found in nature’s smallest details: a lizard’s quick movements, a tree scarred by lighting, the white curve of a snail’s shell. Here the sensory world and the imagined one collide in unexpected and wonderful ways, as Pankey scrutinizes the physical for meaning, and that meaning for truth. With uncommon grace, each of Pankey’s precise lyrics advances our shared ontological questions and expresses our deepest contradictions. In a world of mystery, should we focus on finding meaning or creating it? How can the known—and the unknown— be captured in language? Augury is a masterful and magical collection from a poet of stirring intelligence, “a book of stones unstitched from the wolf’s belly.” Praise for Augury “A darkly luminous book by a poet at the height of his considerable poetic power.” —Kathy Fagan, author of Moving & St. Rage “This is a book I will keep close at hand, alongside the best work of Montale, Dickinson, Celan, and Stevens. This is a book one will turn to again and again.” —Rebecca Dunham, author of Cold Pastoral “Each ethereal image he weaves into his work is delicately curated, whittled down through his attention to sound. . . . Pankey’s poems destabilize as they straddle time and place, and he looks askance at the narrow way in which language is often viewed.” —Publishers Weekly
Download or read book Arcadian Grace written by Stephen Falconer and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2021-10-14 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From prehistory until now there are moments worth discovering poetically: the incarnation of the Word into flesh, the search for the meaning of suffering, the revelation of love in a look, Christ’s descent into hell, the onslaught of death, the abundance of life. Arcadian Grace means to witness a multitude of thoughts and events which happened through various cultures, with the intention of serving a relevance to our lives in the twenty-first century. We still seek out quietude as would a T’ang Dynasty poet on the shores of West Lake, our aspiration to rise, if only for an instant, into levels far surpassing the concrete, capable of being cracked, would meet the expectation evinced in a transcendentalist philosopher’s highest excursion, our despair at seeing wanton destruction, a theologian’s in the Second World War. And does the Spirit today, in the miasma of despair and confusion, reach us with the real power of light and love? The reality found through this adventure of time is that it does.

Download or read book Divination s Grasp written by Richard Werbner and published by Indiana University Press. This book was released on 2015-11-15 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “A work of rare depth and profound insight that is destined to become a classic in African Studies and the anthropology of religion.” —Paul Stoller, author of Yaya’s Story: The Quest for Well-Being in the World Richard Werbner takes readers on a journey though contemporary charismatic wisdom divination in southern Africa. Beginning with the silent language of the divinatory lots, Werbner deciphers the everyday, metaphorical, and poetic language that is used to reveal their meaning. Through Werbner’s skillful interpretations of the language of divination, a picture of Tswapong moral imagination is revealed. Concerns about dignity and personal illumination, witchcraft, pollution, the anger of dead ancestors, as well as the nature of life, truth, cosmic harmony, being, and becoming emerge in this charged African setting. “Werbner’s Divination’s Grasp documents a long and distinguished career in the service of anthropology. It will be a touchstone for anthropological studies of divination for years to come.” —American Ethnologist “Richard Werbner’s superb account of moral imagination and the poetics of divination grasps the density of its subject, matching the insights of the diviner with those of the ethnographer. The book takes its place among the very best works of Africanist anthropology as a new classic in the tradition of ethnographic divination and a necessary reminder of live and deep traditions of African wisdom.” —Michael Lambek, University of Toronto Scarborough
