These presentations were complemented by invited lectures from Stephen Feiner and Ron Azuma, two key researchers in the area of Augmented Reality. The book gives a good overview of the state of the art in Augmented Reality and Virtual Environment research. The special focus of the Workshop was Augmented Reality, reflecting a noticeable strong trend in the field of Virtual Environments. Augmented Reality tries to enrich real environments with virtual objects rather than replacing the real world with a virtual world. The main challenges include real time rendering, tracking, registration and occlusion of real and virtual objects, shading and lighting interaction, and interaction techniques in augmented environments. These problems are addressed by new research results documented in this book. Besides Augmented Reality, the papers collected here also address levels of detail, distributed environments, systems and applications, and interaction techniques.

With the advance of computer networks and hardware technology, parallel and distributed processing has become a key technology which plays an imp- tant part in determining future research and development activities in many academic and industrial branches. It provides a means to solve computati- ally intensive problems by improving processing speed. It is also the only - ableapproachtobuildinghighlyreliableandinherentlydistributedapplications. ISPA2004 provided a forum for scientists and engineers in academia and ind- try to exchange and discuss their experiences, new ideas, research results, and applications about all aspects of parallel and distributed computing. There was a very large number of paper submissions (361) from 26 countries and regions, including not only Asia and the Paci?c, but also Europe and North America. All submissions were reviewed by at least three program or technical committee members or external reviewers. It was extremely di?cult to select the presentations for the conference because there were so many excellent and interesting submissions. In order to allocate as many papers as possible and keep the high quality of the conference, we ?nally decided to accept 78 regular papers and 38 short papers for oral technical presentations. We believe that all of these papers and topics not only provide novel ideas, new results, work in progress and state-of-the-art techniques in this ?eld, but also stimulate the future research activities in the area of parallel and distributed computing with applications.

This workshop brought together researchers interested in the technical issues of supporting communities. This workshop was the third in the DCW series. The ?rst two, entitled D- tributed Computing on the Web, took place in 1998 and 1999 at the University of Rostock, with proceedings published by the University of Rostock Press. This year, the workshop also incorporated the ISLIP (International Symposium on Languages for Intensional Programming) symposium. The ISLIP symposia have taken place every year since 1988, and have led to two volumes published by World-Scienti?c (Intensional Programming I, 1995, and Intensional Progr- ming II, 2000). While the two conferences emerged from di?erent needs, their focus merged to such an extent that it became clear that a joint conference promised to o?er great opportunities.
