Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Mountain Idylls: And Other Poems When the above words were written by Solo mon, King of Israel, about three thousand years ago, they were possibly inspired by the existence even at that early period of an extensive and probably overweighted literature. The same literary conditions are as true to day as when the above truism emanated from that most wonderful of all human intellects. Every age and generation, as well as every chang ing religious or political condition, has brought with it its own peculiar and essentially differing current literature, which, as a rule, continued a brief season, and then vanished, perishing with the age and conditions which called it into be ing; leaving, however, an occasional volume, masterpiece, or even quotation, to become classic and in the form of standard literature survive for generations, and in many instances for ages. Poetry has always occupied a unique posit.on in literature; and though from a pecuniary stand point usually unprofitable, it enjoys the decided advantage of longevity. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Israel in Egypt: A Poem With the desire, apparently, to render more easily credible those extraordinary events, the Plagues of Egypt, - some of the commentators on the Book of Exodus have laid much stress on the fact, that they are all, in kind, such phenomena only as have not infrequently been known in that country. They say, for example, that, at certain seasons, the Nile assumes a reddish color, resembling blood: that the rivers, at times, produce immense numbers of frogs: that the Egyptians have frequently been afflicted with small vermin on their bodies: that immense swarms of flies occasionally pester them, filling the houses, and the air: that a murrain among cattle has often destroyed thousands; and grievous boils have been equally fatal among men: that most violent storms of hail have caused great destruction: that clouds of locusts have wrought havoc through the land: that, at certain times, during a peculiar wind, the air has become fearfully dark; and that pestilences have suddenly carried off numbers who, up to the hour of attack, had been in full vigor. In this way are the ten plagues represented as natural events merely; and, so far, easily credible. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The Early Poetry of Israel in Its Physical and Social Origins Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Early Poetry of Israel in Its Physical and Social Origins Classic Reprint written by George Adam Smith and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-13 with total page 120 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Early Poetry of Israel in Its Physical and Social Origins These three Lectures with their Introduction were delivered in London before the British Academy towards the close of 1910, but till this summer I have been unable to prepare them for the press. In the Introduction I recount the materials available for the illustration of the subject; but it was not possible to cover the whole range of these within three hours. I have, therefore, much to add to what was actually spoken. Some of the discussion of technical questions in Lecture I required expansion; and I desired to give in Lecture III as full a translation as was possible of all the poetical passages relevant to the subject. Where it is necessary to quote the original I have done so, for the sake of those who are ignorant of Hebrew, in the letters of our own alphabet. The details of this transliteration are given on page 1 and at the top of page 4; I may say here that in the transliteration of single words in Lecture III and its notes, I have not thought it necessary always to mark the softer forms of the letters b, g, d, k, p, and t. The name of the God of Israel is given as Yahweh, except in the translation of Deborah's song, where, as in our English version, it appears as The Lord. What is said on pages 84, 85 as to the translation of the Song of Deborah, and the division of it into lines, and its rhythms, is applicable to all the translations offered in these Lectures. In connection with the discussion of rhythms and parallelism in Lecture I, the reader should consult Professor G. B. Gray's paragraphs (44-57) on 'The Poetical Forms of the Prophetic Literature' in his 'Commentary on the Book of Isaiah, i-xxxix, ' in the International Critical Commentary, 1912. I cannot live in pleasure while they faint In pain. Princess. How like a dream the past floats back: it seems But yesterday when I lay tossing upon My couch of pain, a torpor creeping through Each nerve, a fever coursing through my veins And there I lay, dreaming of lilies fair, Of lotus flowers and past delights, and all The bright, glad hopes, that give to early life Its glow and flush; and thus day after day Dragged its slow length along, until, one morn, The breath of lilies, fainting on the air, ifloated into my room, and then I longed once more To gaze upon the Nile, as on the face Of a familiar friend, whose absence long Had made a mournful void within the heart. I summoned to my side my maids, and bade Them place my sandals on my feet, and lead Me to the Nile, where I might bathe my weary Limbs within the cooling flood, and gather Healing from the sacred stream. I sought my favorite haunt, and, bathing, found N ew tides of vigor coursing through my veins. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
