Whether you're restoring a classic car, building a custom hot rod, or fine-tuning a race engine, this book provides practical insights and step-by-step instructions. It's a comprehensive guide that delves into the intricate world of IDF carburetors. From sizing them correctly for your specific application to setting them up for optimal performance, and even blow-through IDF turbo setups, this book covers it all. With detailed instructions and expert tips, readers will learn how to fine-tune IDF carburetors to perfection. Moreover, the book provides valuable insights on troubleshooting and fixing common issues that may arise, making it an indispensable resource for any enthusiast looking to unleash the full potential of their vehicle's performance. "...Several books have been written about Weber carburetors, but this book dives deeper and is extremely comprehensive. It's a technical reference book that covers them from top to bottom, inside and out. If someone wants to learn how to tune Weber carburetors, this book is a great place to start. The principles of the IDF carburetor as described here can be applied to the IDAs as well. The author starts by providing a brief history of Weber carburetors and he even explains what the letter designations mean for the various carburetors. I don't think that has ever been explained before. It was new information for me, even after working with Weber carburetors for 45 years. The depth of his research, as well as his knowledge and passion for the subject, are most impressive. After reading this book, it occurred to me that nothing needed to be added. He has included diagrams, exploded views, charts-you name it; it's all here. He's done a great job..." - Jim Inglese

Book VW Air Cooled Engines

Download or read book VW Air Cooled Engines written by Dr. John F. Kershaw and published by CarTech Inc. This book was released on 2023-02-15 with total page 145 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The VW Beetle (officially the Volkswagen Type 1) needs no introduction. Manufactured and marketed globally by Volkswagen from 1938 to 2003, more than 21 million were produced and sold around the world. The car was extremely popular in the US and Europe during the 1950s and 1960s. However, increasing competition from Japanese, American, and European manufacturers as well as stiffening demands for better safety and emissions contributed to a sharp decline in sales in the early 1970s. The Beetle was manufactured in much smaller numbers in Germany until the late 1970s, when production shifted to Brazil and Mexico, where operating cost was a large factor in keeping the Beetle alive. While simple and fun, the Beetle had simply become outdated. Of course, the enthusiast market did not see it that way. Aficionados loved the simplicity in the design as well as its aesthetics, and they enjoyed tinkering with the mechanicals of their Beetles, Buses, Type 3 models, and Karmann Ghias. There was (and still is) no shortage of options when customizing your Beetle, and for many, extracting as much performance out of the air-cooled flat-4 was the way to go. Not only does it remedy the issue of keeping up with modern traffic but Beetles also respond really well to modifications and have a robust aftermarket to support them. In VW Air-Cooled Engines: How to Build Max Performance, VW veteran Dr. John F. Kershaw lays the groundwork for getting the most possible power for your desired use and application. Covered here are all the various power levels and components. This includes rotating assemblies, cylinder heads, the cams and valvetrain, engine blocks, ignitions systems, fuel injection, carburetors and induction, exhaust, sources for parts, and even turbos and superchargers. Are you looking for just a little more power to keep up with traffic or maybe a streetable high-performance machine? Perhaps you are interested in a little street/strip action or even all-out racing applications. All of your options are examined in this book. Add it to your air-cooled library today.

Book Ford 351 Cleveland Engines

Download or read book Ford 351 Cleveland Engines written by George Reid and published by CarTech Inc. This book was released on 2013 with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ford's 351 Cleveland was designed to be a "mid-sized" V-8 engine, and was developed for higher performance use upon its launch in late 1969 for the 1970 models. The Cleveland engine addressed the major shortcoming of the Windsor engines that preceded it, namely cylinder head air flow. The Windsor engines just couldn't be built at the time to compete effectively with the strongest GM and Mopar small-block offerings, and the Cleveland engine was the answer to that problem. Unfortunately, the Cleveland engine was introduced at the end of Detroit's muscle car era, and the engine, in pure Cleveland form, was very short lived. It did continue on as a low compression passenger car and truck engine in the form of the 351M and 400M, which in their day, offered little in the way of excitement. Renewed enthusiasm in this engine has spawned an influx of top-quality new components that make building or modifying these engines affordable. This new book reviews the history and variations of the 351 Cleveland and Ford's related engines, the 351M and 400M. Basic dimensions and specifications of each engine, along with tips for identifying both design differences and casting numbers are covered. In addition, each engine's strong points and areas of concern are described in detail. Written with high performance in mind, both traditional power tricks and methods to increase efficiency of these specific engines are shared. Also, example builds of 400-, 500-, and even 600-hp engines are highlighted, so you can model your build after any of these powerhouses, depending on your intended use. With the influx of aftermarket parts, especially excellent cylinder heads, the 351 Cleveland as well as the 351M and 400m cousins are now seen as great engines to build. This book will tell you everything you need to know to build a great street or competition engine based in the 351 Cleveland platform.

Book Ford 429 460 Engines

Download or read book Ford 429 460 Engines written by Jim Smart and published by CarTech Inc. This book was released on 2021-12-20 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Learn to make incredible horsepower from Ford’s most powerful big-block engine design. For years, Ford relied on the venerable FE big-block engine design to power its passenger cars, trucks, and even muscle cars—and why not? The design was rugged, reliable, amortized, and a proven race winner at Le Mans and drag strips across the country. However, as is always the case with technology, time marches on, and Ford had a new design with many improvements in mind. Enter the 385 family of engines (also known as the “Lima” big-block). Produced from 1968–1998, the 385-series engines were used in multiple applications from industrial trucks to muscle cars and luxury cruisers. In Ford 429/460 Engines: How to Build Max Performance, which was written by Ford expert Jim Smart, all aspects of performance building are covered, including engine history and design, induction systems, cylinder heads, the valvetrain, camshaft selection, the engine block, and rotating assemblies. The best options, optimal parts matching, aftermarket versus factory parts, budget levels, and build levels are also examined. The 429/460 engines are a good platform for stroking, so that is covered here as well. Whether you want to build a torque-monster engine for your off-road F-150, a better-preforming version of a 1970s-era smog motor for your luxury Lincoln, or an all-out high-horsepower mill for your muscle car, this book is a welcome addition to your performance library.

Book Ford Small Block Engines How to Build Max Performance

Download or read book Ford Small Block Engines How to Build Max Performance written by Jim Smart and published by CarTech Inc. This book was released on 2024-05-15 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Learn how to get the most horsepower out of the popular small-block Ford with this all-new full-color guide. The attention of the performance aftermarket has turned to the Coyote platform and swaps, but Ford is a little different than GM and Chrysler in that regard. The sheer size of the Coyote engine is problematic because it is very difficult to fit into any vehicle with shock towers. However, the shock-tower cars are often the most popular cars to modify. As such, the small-block Ford remains a viable option for making a large amount of horsepower in a much more affordable package. In Ford Small-Block Engines: How to Build Max Performance, Ford expert Jim Smart covers all of the major components, including crankshafts, rods and pistons, camshafts, the valvetrain, oiling systems, intakes, carburetors, ignition systems and exhaust systems. Featured are the latest street heads from AFR, Dart, Ford Performance, Edelbrock, and other prominent manufacturers. Aftermarket blocks are also covered extensively from a variety of manufacturers, such as Ford Performance, Dart, Speedmaster, Bill Mitchell Products, and World Products. The basic design of this engine is more than 60 years old, but the aftermarket for this powerplant has grown over the years and is still growing. While the Coyote engine family has earned a strong following, the original Ford small-block engine retains just as strong of a following, with the massive number of these engines still in use throughout the hobby. Whether you want to get started on your build or you just want to learn about the small-block Ford’s capabilities, this book will make a great addition to your library.

Book A Generative Theory of Relevance

Download or read book A Generative Theory of Relevance written by Victor Lavrenko and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2008-11-14 with total page 211 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A modern information retrieval system must have the capability to find, organize and present very different manifestations of information – such as text, pictures, videos or database records – any of which may be of relevance to the user. However, the concept of relevance, while seemingly intuitive, is actually hard to define, and it's even harder to model in a formal way. Lavrenko does not attempt to bring forth a new definition of relevance, nor provide arguments as to why any particular definition might be theoretically superior or more complete. Instead, he takes a widely accepted, albeit somewhat conservative definition, makes several assumptions, and from them develops a new probabilistic model that explicitly captures that notion of relevance. With this book, he makes two major contributions to the field of information retrieval: first, a new way to look at topical relevance, complementing the two dominant models, i.e., the classical probabilistic model and the language modeling approach, and which explicitly combines documents, queries, and relevance in a single formalism; second, a new method for modeling exchangeable sequences of discrete random variables which does not make any structural assumptions about the data and which can also handle rare events. Thus his book is of major interest to researchers and graduate students in information retrieval who specialize in relevance modeling, ranking algorithms, and language modeling.
