Book Marxism and History

    Book Details:
  • Author : S. H. Rigby
  • Publisher : Manchester University Press
  • Release : 1998
  • ISBN : 9780719056123
  • Pages : 336 pages

Download or read book Marxism and History written by S. H. Rigby and published by Manchester University Press. This book was released on 1998 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Marx's theory of history is often regarded as the most enduring and fruitful aspect of his intellectual legacy. His "historical materialism" has been the inspiration for some of the best historical writing in the works of scholars such as Eric Hobsbawm, E.P.Thompson, Rodney Hilton and Robert Brenner. S.H. Rigby establishes Marx's claims about social structure and historical change, discusses their use in his own and his followers' writings, and assesses the validity of his theories. He argues that Marx's social theories were profoundly contradictory and that Marxism has proved most useful when it is seen as a source of questions, concepts and hypotheses rather than as a philosophy of historical development.

Book Karl Marx s Theory of History

Download or read book Karl Marx s Theory of History written by G. A. Cohen and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2020-05-05 with total page 471 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1978, this book rapidly established itself as a classic of modern Marxism. Cohen's masterful application of advanced philosophical techniques in an uncompromising defense of historical materialism commanded widespread admiration. In the ensuing twenty years, the book has served as a flagship of a powerful intellectual movement--analytical Marxism. In this expanded edition, Cohen offers his own account of the history, and the further promise, of analytical Marxism. He also expresses reservations about traditional historical materialism, in the light of which he reconstructs the theory, and he studies the implications for historical materialism of the demise of the Soviet Union.

Book Theories of Ideology

Download or read book Theories of Ideology written by Jan Rehmann and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2013-07-25 with total page 358 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How to explain the hegemonic stability of neoliberal capitalism even in the midst of its crises? The emergence of ideology theories marked a re-foundation of Marxist research into the functioning of alienation and subjection. Going beyond traditional concepts of ‘manipulation’ and ‘false consciousness’, they turned to the material existence of hegemonic apparatuses and focused on the mostly unconscious effects of ideological practices, rituals and discourses. Jan Rehmann reconstructs the different strands of ideology theories ranging from Marx to Adorno/Horkheimer, from Lenin to Gramsci, from Althusser to Stuart Hall, from Bourdieu to W.F. Haug, from Foucault to Butler. He compares them in a way that a genuine dialogue becomes possible and applies the different methods to the ‘market totalitarianism’ of today’s high-tech-capitalism.

Download or read book Marxism and Ideology written by Ferruccio Rossi-Landi and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 1990 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ferruccio Rossi-Landi was one of Italy's foremost Marxist theorists. In Marxism and Ideology, which represents the culmination of his life's work, he goes further than any writer to illuminate the complex issues raised by the concept of `ideology'. Through its penetrating analysis of the intimate relationship between language, consciousness, and power, his treatise not only offers a valuable review of the history of the notion of ideology and the debate surrounding it, but represents an original and comprehensive revision of the classicMarxist theory of ideology. While retaining the conceptual framework of historical materialism, the author takes on board three major developments in post-war human sciences: the recognition of Marxism's shortcomings as a predictive and strictly empirical system of thought, the relativism whichhas invaded every academic discipline, and the emergence of semiology and linguistics as major fields of enquiry. In the hands of Rossi-Landi, Marxism becomes both a finely-tuned analytical tool for investigating ideology and a fully fledged ideology in its own right.

Book Imaginary Relations

Download or read book Imaginary Relations written by Michael Sprinker and published by The. This book was released on 1987 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book sets out to clarify the nature of the aesthetic as a category within the theory of historical materialism. It opens with an analysis of Marx's brief discussion of Greek art in the Grundrisse, moves through a series of readings of specifically bourgeois texts, including those of Ruskin, G.M. Hopkins, Nietzsche and Henry James, and then to the terrain of Marxism in the concepts of history underwriting the work of Fredric Jameson and Jean-Paul Sartre. Sprinkler detours through the recent works of Perry Anderson to set the stage for a systematic consideration of the theoretical itinerary and continuing relevance of the contributions of Louis Althusser. Imaginary Relations is a cogently argued attempt to shift the terrain of Marxist theorizing about art from the domain of ideology considered as simply false consciousness to a concept of art which makes aesthetic texts sources of empirical data about the real, historical world.

Download or read book The German Ideology written by Karl Marx and published by Martino Fine Books. This book was released on 2011-06-01 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 2011 Reprint of 1939 Edition. Parts I & III of "The German Ideology." Full facsimile of the original edition, not reproduced with Optical Recognition Software. Originally published by the Marx-Engels Institute in Moscow in 1939. "The German Ideology" was written by Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels circa 1846, but published later. The original edition was divided into three parts. Part I, the most significant, is perhaps the classic statement of the Marxist theory of history and his much cited "materialist conception of history." Since its first publication, Marxist scholars have found Part I "The German Ideology" particularly valuable since it is perhaps the most comprehensive statement of Marx's theory of history stated at such length and detail. Part II consisted of many satirically written polemics against Bruno Bauer, other Young Hegelians, and Max Stirner. These polemical and highly partisan sections of the "German Ideology" have not been reproduced in this edition. We reprint Parts I & Parts III only. Part III treats Marx & Engels' conception of true socialism and is reprinted in its entirety. Part II has not been reprinted in this edition in order to produce a small and inexpensive book which contains the gist of the "German Ideology." Appendix contains the "Theses on Feuerbach." Index of authors, with scholarly citations and footnotes.
