Book Identity and Language Learning

Download or read book Identity and Language Learning written by Bonny Norton and published by Multilingual Matters. This book was released on 2013-10-04 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Identity and Language Learning draws on a longitudinal case study of immigrant women in Canada to develop new ideas about identity, investment, and imagined communities in the field of language learning and teaching. Bonny Norton demonstrates that a poststructuralist conception of identity as multiple, a site of struggle, and subject to change across time and place is highly productive for understanding language learning. Her sociological construct of investment is an important complement to psychological theories of motivation. The implications for language teaching and teacher education are profound. Now including a new, comprehensive Introduction as well as an Afterword by Claire Kramsch, this second edition addresses the following central questions: - Under what conditions do language learners speak, listen, read and write? - How are relations of power implicated in the negotiation of identity? - How can teachers address the investments and imagined identities of learners? The book integrates research, theory, and classroom practice, and is essential reading for students, teachers and researchers in the fields of language learning and teaching, TESOL, applied linguistics and literacy.

Book English Learners Identity Formation and School Learning

Download or read book English Learners Identity Formation and School Learning written by Megan Byrne and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The English Language Learner (ELL) population is increasing in the United States. Thus, the demand to understand the unique ways in which ELLs learn has become vital to the education system. It is no longer acceptable to thrust ELLs into a self-help environment and it is no longer conceivable to ignore the value of language and culture. In an attempt to seek better teaching methods for ELLs, I first frame language on the world context for ELLs. Language bias, linguistic imperialism, and dialect stereotype are three notions that ooze into the classroom context and may cause ELLs to understand English in a particular way as well as marginalize their language and culture. Next, I investigate some of the individualized ways in which multiethnic and multilingual adolescents form their identities based on their unique experiences. Identity development affects student learning in a variety of ways when students are dealing with social repercussions of ethnic identities, intersectionality, and imagined communities. After discussing the ELL identity, I describe the ways in which teacher attitude and pedagogy can affect student identity development and thus student achievement. Discrimination, privilege, and ethnocentrism are factors in identity development and may negatively affect the way students react and cope in a classroom. Next, I interview some middle-school ESL students in order to gain insight into authentic experiences. The data revealed clear connections between teacher mindset, school culture, and student attitude on learning. Finally, I conclude that there are several strategies that teachers can begin to adapt that will improve the ELL experience in school. Teachers can improve their classroom tremendously by validating students outside of the classroom, using culture as a resource, teaching language through content, involving parents, and seeking professional development. Then, ELLs can form positive self-identities and have an excellent education.

Book Supporting Cultural Identity in Language Acquisition of Early English Language Learners

Download or read book Supporting Cultural Identity in Language Acquisition of Early English Language Learners written by Delrose Smith-Stewart and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 66 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Understanding cultural elements is as important as understanding language. It is a known fact that early childhood age is the most suitable time to start second language learning. The learning of another language provides the most effective tool for penetrating the barrier of a single language and a a single culture. As a result, this study is intended to discuss how teachers can support culture in the language acquisition of early ELLs. Notably, Shepard (2004) stated that teachers as social beings construct the world of teaching and learning according to their values and dispositions. With that in mind this study attempts to provide regular education teachers with research-based evidence of strategies and activities that will help ELLs in their language acquisition. The relationship between language and culture will also be pointed out, thus, providing teachers with initial steps for accommodating English language learners (ELLs) in their classrooms and providing a culturally responsive environment that caters to the needs of the diverse learners. Additionally, strategies for supporting and integrating culture in language acquisition in the classroom will be described. The study recommended that teachers of ELLs should support culture in the language learning and development of the learners.
