It explores both the philosophical and theoretical levels, focusing on deconstructing and re-evaluating the concept of ‘Chineseness.’ At a social and experiential level, it concentrates on how successive generations of early migrants experience, negotiate and express their Chinese identity. The diasporic literature has taken up the idea of hybrid identity construction largely in relation to first- and second-generation migrants and to the sojourner’s sense of roots in a diasporic setting somewhat lost in the debate over Chinese diasporas and identities are the experiences of long-term migrant communities. Their experiences are usually discussed in terms of the melting-pot concepts of assimilation and integration that assume ethnic identification decreases and eventually disappears over successive generations. Based on ethnography, fieldwork and participant observation on multi-generational Australian-born Chinese whose families have resided in Australia from three to six generations, this study reveals a contrasting picture of ethnic identification.

As a significant theoretical contribution to the theory of transnational family formation in contexts where restrictive immigration policies result in members of multigenerational families living across different countries, this book will be of interest to academics in the fields of sociology, anthropology, race and ethnic studies as well as Asian and Chinese studies.

Book excerpt: This dissertation project is an examination of how 2nd generation Chinese American children's cultural identity is constructed and reconstructed through a geographic lens across children's everyday space including home, school and community. Interdependent relationships are also examined between cultural structures and children's agency when children's space is considered geographically, and collectively at various levels. Drawing upon a multidisciplinary perspective, this project analyzes immigrant children's cultural identity in a middle class ethnoburb context in a southern city in the U.S. Building on structuration theory, the notion of children's agency, and the geographical interpretation of identity and social boundaries, this study asks: how children's life is culturally structured at home, in school and community; if there is any, how children's agency is enacted through social interactions within their environment at those places; and how cultural structure and agency as well as space are interdependent, explaining the discourse of 2nd generation immigrant children's construction of cultural identity. Through online survey, in-depth interviews, observations and field notes, ethnographic data was collected on 30 participating children and their parents, community leaders, institutional officials, local event organizers and other relevant adults at children's everyday spaces of homes, school and various community locations. Analysis of the data demonstrated that these children's everyday life is differently structured at home, school and community in terms of cultural orientation, and children have to frequently compare, reinterpret and switch back and forth between different cultural expectations and norms to make sense of their social world, expressing their sense of cultural identity. It was highlighted that the resistance between cultural structures and children's agency across space are ever changing, reflecting children's sense of belonging to their ethnic and national identities "here and now". The results imply that immigrant children's childhood experience can be seen as a reflection of social structures simultaneously at local, national and global levels.

Most of our interviewees, even if they have been living in Australia for many years, struggle to convey their cultural identity. This project is a precursor to further research on this fascinating universal issue for immigrants.

Book excerpt: This book focuses on the transmission of ethnic identity across three generations of Italian-Australians, specifically Italian-Australians of Calabrian descent in the Adelaide region of Australia. Simone Marino analyzes ethnographic data collected over a three-year period to consider individual, familial and community cultural practices, as well as societal influences on ethnic identity transmission, in order to present generational differences in the understandings of Italian-Australian identity. Among other factors, the role of community events, community networks, and cultural practices associated with being Italian-Australian are examined. The transmission of ethnic identity is analysed through the lens of sociological theories, including Sayad's concept of double absence and Bourdieu's ideas of habitus and cultural capital, and is considered at the macro, meso, and micro spheres of social life. Ultimately, Marino’s study reveals clear generational differences amongst Italian-Australians: the first generation, those who arrived from Italy, manifest a condition of feeling absent, the second generation present a condition of ‘in-between-ness’, between the world of their immigrant parents and that of Australians, and the third generation experience a sense of ethnic revival.
