Devant la grande diversité des phénomènes sociaux, une théorie générale est-elle pensable ? A partir d'une étude comparative des quatre systèmes de représentation de la reproduction humaine et à la suite de ses travaux sur les Na de Chine, en commençant par réfuter les thèses principales avancées en anthropologie de la parenté, fondées entièrement ou en partie sur le biologique (celles de Henri Morgan, Emile Durkheim, Arnold van Gennep, Claude Levi-Strauss et David Schneider), l'auteur tente ici de formaliser un système de la parenté qui clarifie les notions de " culture ", d'"ethnie " et de " société " et qui distingue les caractéristiques de l'objet des sciences naturelles, d'un côté, de celles de l'objet des sciences sociales, de l'autre. En repensant ainsi l'approche anthropologique selon la triple et très nette distinction du biologique, du culturel et du social, Hua Cai montre que la parenté (consanguinité plus affinité, dans le vocabulaire anthropologique) est totalement culturelle et sociale. Il en vient par là à avancer de nouvelles propositions épistémologiques qui remettent en question un certain rationalisme occidental et serait utiles, selon toute apparence, aux autres sciences humaines et sociales.

Book excerpt: This book investigates the interface of ethnicity with occupation, empirically observed in luxury international hotels in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. It employs the two main disciplines of anthropology and sociology in order to understand the root causes and meaning of ethnicity at work within the hospitality industry sector. More specifically, it observes social change in a multi-ethnic and non-secular society through an ethnographic study located in a micro organisation: the Grand Hotel. At the individual level, this research shows how identity shifts and transformation can be mediated through the consumption and manipulation of food at the workplace. In addition, it combines an ambitious theoretical discussion on the concept of ethnicity together with empirical data that highlights how ethnicity is lived on an everyday basis at a workplace manifesting the dynamics of cultural, religious and ethnic diversity. The book presents the quantitative and qualitative findings of two complementary surveys and pursues an interdisciplinary approach, as it integrates methodologies from the sociology of organisations with classic fieldwork methods borrowed from ethnology, while combining French and Anglo-Saxon schools of thoughts on questions of identity and ethnicity. The results of the cultural contact occurring in a westernised pocket of the global labour market – in which social practices derive from the headquarters located in a society where ethnicity is self-ascribed – with Malaysian social actors to whom ethnicity is assigned will be of particular interest for social scientists and general readers alike.

It is the subject of recurrent investigations and reflections within the special mechanism of the African Union, the Working Group on Elderly Persons and Persons with Disabilities of the African Commission on Human and Peoples' Rights. But how are an individual's identity-based conflicts transformed and redefined? Identity is a specific form of social capital, hence contexts where multiple identities obtain necessarily come with a hierarchy, with differences, and hence with a certain degree of hostility. The contributors to this book examine the rapid transformation of identity hierarchies affecting Iran, Pakistan and Turkey, a symptom of political fractures, social-economic transformation, and new regimes of subjectification. They focus on the state's role in organizing access to resources, with its institutions often being the main target of demands, rather than competing social groups. Such con- texts enable entrepreneurs of collective action to exploit identity differences, which in turn help them to expand the scale of their mobilization and to align local and national conflicts. The authors also examine how identity-based violence may be autonomous in certain contexts, and serve to prime collective action and transform the relations between communities.
