Book IDENTIFYING TEACHER EMOTIONAL SOCIAL COMPETENCIES THAT PREDICT POSITIVE NEGATIVE RELATIONSHIPS WITH STUDENTS

Download or read book IDENTIFYING TEACHER EMOTIONAL SOCIAL COMPETENCIES THAT PREDICT POSITIVE NEGATIVE RELATIONSHIPS WITH STUDENTS written by Justin R. Fults and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 129 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Teacher emotional-social competencies may bare some connection to student perceptions of the quality of relationships with their teachers. Student perceptions of these relationships with teachers may in turn influence student affective and cognitive outcomes in meaningful ways. Teachers with emotional-social deficiencies face challenges in establishing a desirable and productive learning environment for their students. The strength of the relationships between a teacher and the students within their classroom has been identified as being one of the single most influential contributors towards student cognitive and affective outcomes. The purpose of this study was to investigate the correlations that exist amongst teacher emotional-social competencies using the EQi 2.0 and student perceptions of teacher behavior along two dimensions of the Model for Interpersonal Teacher Behavior (MITB). These dimensions (Influence and Proximity) map student perceptions of their relationships with teachers. This study sought to identify a set of teacher EQi scales that best predict student perceptions of teacher Influence and Proximity. The results of the study indicated that all five EQi composite (Self-Perception, Self-Expression, Interpersonal, Decision Making, and Stress Management) and nine subscales (Self-Regard, Emotional Self-Expression, Assertiveness, Interpersonal Relationships, Social Responsibility, Problem Solving, Flexibility, Stress Tolerance, and Optimism) revealed statistically significant positive relationships with teacher Influence. The EQi composite scale of Interpersonal significantly predicts teacher Influence as did the subscale of Social Responsibility.

Book Social Emotional Learning and Student Teacher Relationship

Download or read book Social Emotional Learning and Student Teacher Relationship written by Kimberly L. Palazzo and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 69 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study is to see if social emotional learning will improve student and teacher relationship. Most research looks at the effects of restorative practice, yet, during the implementation, specific aspects such as social emotional learning are left out. The survey questions were created to help find the gap in research as to whether or not social emotional learning helps students establish good rapport with adults on campus, particularly with teachers. Since restorative practices is used at this North San Diego County high school, the survey questions were guided to determine if these practices assist in creating a positive relationship between student and teacher. The survey consisted of ten questions on Google Forms and asked questions that identified social emotional learning, student teacher relationships, and overall environment on campus. The interview questions were developed to help provide more detail as to whether restorative practices indeed guide social emotional learning. Overwhelmingly, the data showed that both students and teachers feel that social emotional learning would help students succeed in school. The majority of students and teachers also believe that student and teacher relationships are important, hence, correlates to the significance of social emotional learning to build these bonds. The question then remains how does a school execute a restorative practice program that also teaches social emotional learning? If social emotional learning is taught and teachers have been trained on how to build relationships with their students many things would improve in the school.

This book was released on 2021-06-25 with total page 187 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Establishing a student-centered classroom environment where learning puts students’ interests first is essential for middle school students to learn and thrive. Student success does not simply rely on instruction; it relies on external factors such as school and classroom climate, positive relationships with their teachers and other adults, and a strong sense of belonging with their peers. The young adolescent learner is at a turning point where the need for love, belonging, and acceptance is heightened. Research studies indicate that large percentages of students lack social-emotional competence and believe their teachers do not care about them. Social-emotional learning skills are vital for young adolescents, as are 21st century skills and competencies to prepare them for an information- and technology-driven world. Aligning Social-Emotional and 21st Century Learning in the Classroom: Emerging Research and Opportunities shows teachers practical ways to combine the skills that young adolescents need (social-emotional) and the 21st century skills that they learn to create a culture of success in their middle school classrooms. This book also provides examples of education technologies that teachers can use to promote 21st century learning in their classroom. Highlighting a wide range of topics such as communication skills, critical thinking, social media, and emotional intelligence, this book is crucial for teachers, school administrators, instructional designers, K-12 educators, curriculum developers, academicians, researchers, and students.

Book PROMOTING POSITIVE TEACHER CHILD INTERACTIONS THROUGH IMPLEMENTATION OF A SOCIAL EMOTIONAL LEARNING CURRICULUM WITH PERFORMANCE FEEDBACK

Download or read book PROMOTING POSITIVE TEACHER CHILD INTERACTIONS THROUGH IMPLEMENTATION OF A SOCIAL EMOTIONAL LEARNING CURRICULUM WITH PERFORMANCE FEEDBACK written by Elizabeth S. Barker and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although the nature of teacher-child relationships is a known factor in academic and social success, little research has focused on methods to improve these relationships at the classwide level. Social emotional learning has been proposed as a method to improve child social skills, a significant factor in promoting positive interpersonal relationships. In addition, teacher performance feedback has been shown to increase use of effective behavior management practices. However, no research to date has examined the effects of a comprehensive intervention involving delivery of a social emotional learning curriculum with performance feedback on the proportion of positive and negative teacher-child interactions observed in the classroom. Using a single subject ABCBC reversal design, this study examined the effects of Strong Start: K-2 with performance feedback on a measure of teacher-child interactions. A combination of curriculum delivery and performance feedback was found to increase positive interactions and decrease negative interactions as measured by an adapted version of the Teacher Coder Impressions Inventory (TCI; Webster-Stratton et al., 2008).

Book School based Social emotional Development

Download or read book School based Social emotional Development written by Lindsey S. Mantz and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 169 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study investigated the association of grade level, teacher-student relationship quality, student-student relationship quality, and the teaching of social- emotional skills with students' social-emotional competence. It also investigated grade level as a moderator of the associations between teacher-student relationship quality and social-emotional competence and between student-student relationship quality and social-emotional competence. Teacher-student relationship quality also was examined as a moderator of the association between the teaching of social- emotional skills and students' social-emotional competence. Data were gathered from 29,671 students in grades 3-12 from 115 public schools in Delaware. Results of multilevel statistical analyses indicated that beyond the effects of student-level and school-level demographic factors, elementary schools had lower mean social- emotional competence scores than high schools. However, there was no significant difference between the mean social-emotional competence scores of elementary and middle schools. Results demonstrated a positive association between students' perceptions of their social-emotional competence and their perceptions of teacher- student relationship quality, student-student relationship quality, and teaching of social-emotional skills. Although there was no significant difference in the strength of the association of teacher-student relationship quality and social-emotional competence perceptions in the comparison between elementary and middle schools, there was a stronger association in high schools compared to elementary schools. Results also indicated that the association between student-student relationship quality and social-emotional competence perceptions was stronger in elementary schools compared to middle or high schools. Additionally, the study found a stronger relationship between perceptions of social-emotional instruction and social-emotional competence within the context of positively perceived teacher-student relationships as opposed to less positively perceived relationships. Findings of this exploratory study suggest that teacher-student relationships, student-student relationships, and the teaching of social-emotional competencies may be potential avenues for school-based social-emotional development programming for students.

This book was released on 2022 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thirty-two teachers and 71 students from urban middle schools were surveyed to examine the extent to which dimensions of teacher social-emotional capacity (SEC) were associated with teachers' perceptions of building supportive teacher-student relationships (TSRs) with students, especially Black male students (BMSs), and the extent to which these students' perceptions of TSRs were associated with classroom belonging. The study found that teachers high in SEC and in the SEC dimensions Relationship/Social Skills and Responsible Decision Making were less likely than their counterparts to report challenges in building supportive TSRs with all students and that there was a positive association between students' perceptions of supportive TSRs and their sense of classroom belonging. Study findings have potential for closing the opportunity gap for BMSs. Recommendations for practice include targeting teacher professional development to improve teacher SEC overall and in the SEC dimensions Relationship/Social Skills and Responsible Decision Making.

Book Social Emotional Competence and Teacher Stress

Download or read book Social Emotional Competence and Teacher Stress written by Leslie Carole Forcina and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 101 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Author's abstract: Teacher stress and continuing high attrition rates for the teaching profession have significant multiple impacts, although arguably the most important is student achievement. Research indicates that as teacher stress increases to high levels, teacher effectiveness decreases. Attempts to reduce stress have historically focused on organizational or systemic change with minimal success. There remains a clear and distinct call to pursue individual factors that may influence teachers' abilities to moderate stress. Social emotional competence (SEC) is a set of skills that allows individuals to understand themselves, their emotions, the social context as well as relationships and decision making. Existing research has focused on students' levels of SEC. The SEC components of self-awareness and responsible decision making directly impact the appraisal or judgment phase of stress. Therefore, this study examined the individual characteristic of SEC and its relationships with teacher stress and teacher intention to leave. Data were also gathered regarding exposure to the five dimensions of SEC during pre-service training and professional development programs. The researcher developed five instruments to be used in an online survey. This study found that teachers continue to experience a significant degree of stress due to working as a teacher. A very weak negative relationship was found between level of SEC and teacher stress. Multiple regression analysis identified a moderate negative relationship between the SEC component of self-regulation and teacher stress. A weak negative relationship was also found between relationship management and teacher stress. SEC did not moderate the effects of stress on a teacher's intention to leave. A significant relationship was identified between stress and teacher intention to leave. Teachers reported some exposure to social awareness skills, responsible decision making and relationship management during pre-service and professional learning opportunities. The majority of teachers reported no exposure to self-awareness activities or emotional self-regulation strategies.

Book Strategies and Methods of Training Teacher Emotional Competence

Download or read book Strategies and Methods of Training Teacher Emotional Competence written by and published by . This book was released on 2022 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Teaching is an emotional endeavor. That is why teachers must be equipped with skills to manage their emotions as well as emotions of their students. The present research investigates a strategies and methods for a model of training teacher emotional competency. Elementary school teachers (N=78) were asked about their perception of the importance of emotional competencies including emotional self-awareness, emotion regulation, effective emotional expression, identifying and responding to students' emotions, promoting a positive emotional climate in the classroom, using emotions to promote learning, skills to promote student emotional competence, and skills to maintain teacher well-being. They also reported how often they use those competencies and their confidence in applying each competency in the classroom. The teachers were asked about their preferred method of training of emotional competencies. In addition to surveying teachers, individual interviews were conducted with a teacher, school counselor, and a principal to gather more in-depth information regarding training in emotional skills, emotional needs teachers may have, and explore potential barriers for training. Results demonstrated that teachers believe that the emotional competencies are very important for their work, and they use them frequently in the classroom. Teachers also reported that in-person training is most beneficial, and training which is incorporated into other in-service trainings, like training for social-emotional learning, is preferred. Additional methods they endorsed included regular consultation with school counselors or psychologists and a course on emotional intelligence during their preservice teacher training program. The present research also identified evidenced-based strategies for training emotional competencies including didactic trainings, self-reflective activities, mindfulness practices, role plays, and case studies, and a rational for use of strategies is provided for the training model of teacher emotional competence.
