From its inception, the participation in online courses has continued to grow exponentially as many brick and mortar higher educational institutions have expanded their online programs. As students are autonomous and independent learners within these environments, it is important to investigate their motivation and self-regulation as these variables affect their academic success. Substantial research has demonstrated self-efficacy and academic success are related, but less is known about the role of self-regulation in relation to self-efficacy and academic outcomes in online classrooms. This study explored how self-efficacy and selfregulation impact academic outcome in fully online courses. Subjects were 563 undergraduate and graduate students enrolled in asynchronous online classes at the University of Georgia. Students responded to surveys on motivational beliefs, self-efficacy and metacognitive selfregulation subscales via the Motivated Strategies for Learning Questionnaire (MSLQ) and an additional survey that probed for task value and self-efficacy in an online environment. Academic outcome was measured by the students’ final end of course grades. Contrary to expectations, results indicated none of the demographic or subscale measures significantly correlated to academic outcome. Thus, the proposed mediation model of self-efficacy leading to self-regulation, which then impacts academic outcome was not able to be performed due to lack of fit. The study included high achieving students and a narrow margin of academic outcomes, which made teasing out self-efficacy and self-regulation effects amongst the sample difficult. While self-regulation has been identified as an important factor in student success in online courses throughout the literature, the findings of this study reflect a weak relationship between self-regulation learning and academic outcome in a sample of high achievers.

The most widely used predictors of college achievement, which heavily influence retention, are prior ability measurements, such as students' high school grade point average and SAT scores. It is possible that other, less commonly examined, variables exist that better explain retention. Survey data were collected from 589 first-year college students to examine predictors of 4-, 5- and 7- year college retention and graduation rates. Variables included the use of learning strategies, aspects of motivation (task value, self efficacy, test anxiety), adherence to goal orientation (mastery, performance approach, performance avoidance), prior achievement measures (high school GPA and SAT scores), first-semester college GPA, and demographic variables (gender, race, on-campus living situation). Students completed the Motivated Strategies for Learning Questionnaire (MSLQ) and the Patterns of Adaptive Learning Scales (PALS). Results of multiple hierarchical logistic regressions indicated that the strongest predictors of college graduation include race, high school GPA, having a mastery goal orientation, and first-semester college GPA. Implications for high stakes college admissions decisions are discussed.

Book excerpt: In recent years, educators have become increasingly concerned with students' attempts to manage their own learning and achievement efforts through activities that influence the instigation, direction and persistence of those efforts. In 1989, Zimmerman and Schunk edited the first book devoted to this topic. They assembled key theorists offering a range of perspectives on how students self-regulate their academic functioning. One purpose of that volume was to provide theoretical direction to ongoing as well as nascent efforts to explore academic self-regulatory processes. Since that date, there has been an exponential surge in research. This second volume on academic self-regulation offers the fruits of the first generation of research. It also addresses a number of key issues that have arisen since then such as how self-regulation differs from such related constructs as motivation and metacognition, and whether students can be taught self-regulatory skills. The contributors reveal an interesting, uplifting, and at times, disturbing picture of how students grapple with the day-to-day problems of achieving in circumstances with inherent limitations and obstacles. This volume provides insight into the source of students' capabilities to surmount adversities -- the origins of their self-initiated processes designed to improve learning, motivation, and achievement. The text is organized on the basis of a conceptual framework that analyzes academic self-regulation into four major dimensions. That model is presented in the first chapter, and key processes that influence each of these dimensions are discussed by prominent researchers in the chapters that follow. Because each chapter is written to follow a common format, this work provides a level of continuity and parsimony normally found only in authored textbooks.

Book excerpt: There is a growing disconnect between youth's expectations to attend and graduate from college on the one hand and their ability to follow through on these plans on the other. This discrepancy is pronounced at the community college, especially among low-income, first-generation, and underrepresented students. What is missing in the current community college literature is an investigation of the role of agency in facilitating transfer among community college students. Based on theoretical work, low-structured environments like the community college require a substantial amount of individual agency to attain long-term goals (Heckhausen et al., 2010). Thus, students must depend heavily on their own internal, motivational resources to reach their educational goals.Two studies examined motivational and self-regulatory strategies, specifically goal engagement and compensatory secondary control (composed of goal adjustment and self-protection), among community college students aspiring to transfer. Goal engagement strategies aid in the successful pursuit of goals, while compensatory secondary control strategies are responses to setbacks or obstacles in goal pursuit. Study 1 assessed students within one year of transferring to a university, while Study 2 assessed first-year community college students over a two-year period. Participants included 163 students in Study 1 and 193 students in Study 2 from two local community college districts. The sample was largely comprised of women and was ethnically diverse.Regression-based analyses investigated the impact of motivational and self-regulatory strategies on academic behavior, transfer-related behavior, transfer outcomes, well-being and satisfaction variables. Across Study 1 and Study 2, goal engagement strategies were associated with positive outcomes. Compensatory secondary control strategies had fewer significant relationships with variables of interest and relationships were negative. Additionally, the interaction between compensatory secondary control and selective primary control (a goal engagement subscale) influenced transfer behaviors and outcomes. Significant ethnic differences emerged in goal engagement with Latino students reporting higher levels of goal engagement than Asian American or European American students, despite poorer academic performance and taking longer to transfer to a university. The results of both studies can be used to implement cost-effective and short-term psychological interventions that maximize students' motivational resources and facilitate transfer to a university.
