However, research indicates that professional development opportunities oriented to help teachers enhance the learning experience of high-performing or gifted students are scant. Classroom teachers do not receive adequate support to identify giftedness which contributes to misconceptions and stereotypical beliefs causing many potentially gifted students to unidentified and deprived of adequate differentiated instruction. Expectedly, a large number of those are ELL's whose lack of English language proficiency sometimes hinders their options to be found eligible. Since educators are the primary referral source to gifted programs, educating them is a priority. This project presents two professional development workshops. One is designed to assist educators in the timely identification of giftedness in ELLs, and provide them with differentiated instructional strategies to meet their needs. The second will help parents become familiar with the traits and needs of gifted children to enhance their learning experience at home. These workshops are intended to contribute to closing the gap that results in the underrepresentation of ELLs in gifted programs.
