Book Forests to Climate Change Mitigation

Download or read book Forests to Climate Change Mitigation written by Md. Danesh Miah and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2010-10-01 with total page 108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Today, the effect of global climate change is clear to all. It is clearly dangerous in developing countries such as Bangladesh. The industrial revolution caused major changes in technology, socio-economy and cultures in the late 18th and early 19th century, beginning in Britain and spreading throughout the world. The technology dominated economy was mostly dependent on energy produced from fossil fuel, which still holds true today. It is well known that fossil fuel burning has increased the GHGs to the atmosphere, thus creating global warming. Among the GHGs, the concentration of CO2 has been confirmed as the largest. Terrestrial ecosystems are clearly influencing the concentration of GHGs in the atmosphere. Greenhouse gases are constantly entering and leaving the atmosphere. Actively growing trees and other plants absorb CO2 from the atmosphere, combine it with water through photosynthesis and create sugars and more stable carbohydrates. Through this process, trees capture and store atmospheric CO2 in vegetation, soils and biomass products. The Kyoto Protocol, in 1997, explored a flexible mechanism, CDM (Clean Development Mechanism) where Annex I and non-Annex I parties interact for climate change mitigation. Forestry activities have been considered important in the arena of climate change as they act both as a sink and sources of carbon. The purpose of this book is to highlight the means of efficiently reducing global warming through forestry options in Bangladesh and the positive implications of CDM.

Book Community Based Forest Management CBFM in Bangladesh

Download or read book Community Based Forest Management CBFM in Bangladesh written by Tapan Kumar Nath and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-07-27 with total page 187 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book is immensely beneficial to the readers to have a clear understanding of various CBFM practices prevailing in Bangladesh.Providing a comprehensive and critical analysis of success stories concerning several CBFM practices in different forest areas of Bangladesh, together with their respective strengths and weaknesses, it identifies sharing authority to take decision by the community as one of the main weaknesses. The other main weakness is the lack of beat level authority to coordinate with community for making the process vibrant. The book determines that it is the community patrol group which is most effective under the co-management system, yet the general body and executive committee of the co-management system are composed of different stakeholders, each of which is subject to their own work pressures, and are not as effective as claimed. There is a need to empower communities living in and around forests, and to create ownership of the forests so that they can feel that the forests around them are by the community and for the community.

Download or read book Seedling Growth Performance of Cassia fistula Linn Using Climate Change Scenarios for Bangladesh written by Mohammad Ullah and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2008-09-17 with total page 11 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scientific Study from the year 2008 in the subject Forestry / Forestry Economics, , language: English, abstract: Abstract Climate is a key factor which determines the distribution of plants and animals. The time has come to identify the indigenous and/or exotic forest tree species considering nationally viable and adaptable to future climate change. A need may exist to develop the management techniques with experimental settings to facilitate the survival and make best use of suitable species as well. The aim of the study was to assess the early growth performance of Cassia fistula using Climate change scenarios for Bangladesh. The experiment was conducted in the nursery and tree propagation laboratory of Institute of Forestry and Environmental Sciences, University of Chittagong, Bangladesh from April 2008 to June 2008. The experiment was conducted under existing temperature; low, mid and high temperature scenarios. The highest average height (13.05 cm) and collar diameter (1.53 cm) of Cassia fistula was found in low temperature scenario followed by existing temperature; mid and high temperature scenarios respectively. Also, average leaf number (21) was developed in low temperature scenario followed by existing (11); high (4) and mid (3) temperature scenarios respectively. The indigenous forest tree species of Bangladesh Cassia fistula may not survive in the natural forest when the temperature of Bangladesh will be rise and the species will go to vulnerable to extinct condition.

Book Confronting Climate Uncertainty in Water Resources Planning and Project Design

Download or read book Confronting Climate Uncertainty in Water Resources Planning and Project Design written by Patrick A. Ray and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2015-08-20 with total page 149 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Confronting Climate Uncertainty in Water Resources Planning and Project Design describes an approach to facing two fundamental and unavoidable issues brought about by climate change uncertainty in water resources planning and project design. The first is a risk assessment problem. The second relates to risk management. This book provides background on the risks relevant in water systems planning, the different approaches to scenario definition in water system planning, and an introduction to the decision-scaling methodology upon which the decision tree is based. The decision tree is described as a scientifically defensible, repeatable, direct and clear method for demonstrating the robustness of a project to climate change. While applicable to all water resources projects, it allocates effort to projects in a way that is consistent with their potential sensitivity to climate risk. The process was designed to be hierarchical, with different stages or phases of analysis triggered based on the findings of the previous phase. An application example is provided followed by a descriptions of some of the tools available for decision making under uncertainty and methods available for climate risk management. The tool was designed for the World Bank but can be applicable in other scenarios where similar challenges arise.

Book Climate Change and Forest in Bangladesh

Download or read book Climate Change and Forest in Bangladesh written by Siddiqur Rahman and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2012 with total page 60 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Forest tree species showed authentic response to climate change. Trees in the Forest are macro organisms according to their size, thus affected more than other microorganisms. Forest trees response to climate change in their growth, survivability, spatial distribution, adaptation and mitigation of climate change. Forest growth, especially tree species growth is affected due to climate change induced phenomena like elevated temperature, salinity intrusion, changed precipitation and humidity etc. Tree species might be dislocated to other habitat area from their own. This spatial shift may be conducted in association with temporal passage of time. Forest tree species are also subversive to survivability. Tree species may experience adverse survival condition at both initial and mature stage. Morphological adaptation to changed climate can impose altered growth, changed phenology, fruiting pattern, elongation in seed dormancy etc. Future forest tree species in Bangladesh might experience all these misappropriation in near future. As natural resources do not tolerate any sharp change, an alteration in climatic condition of Bangladesh would thus be harmful to its growth and development.

Book Forest conservation in protected areas of Bangladesh

Download or read book Forest conservation in protected areas of Bangladesh written by Mohammad Shaheed Hossain Chowdhury and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-07-15 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book dealt with a number of issues under the broad subject matter of protected area focusing on the policy of collaborative management as a means to augment the forest conservation activities and enhance community development in Bangladesh. Studies covered in the book emerged with the success stories of protected area co-management, both in terms of community development and biodiversity conservation. Significant level of development was noticed in the socio-economic conditions of the surrounding communities. Empowerment and improved social dignity of women participants signifies the initiation of co-management approach. The principles of participatory governance were found reasonably well reflected in legal and policy frameworks. Based on the lessons from the studies, a general metaphysical model, namely ‘Spider-web model of protected area co-management’ has been developed that can be potentially applicable in countries where local communities rely heavily on protected areas.

Book Spatial Distribution of Gmelina Arborea in Bangladesh

Download or read book Spatial Distribution of Gmelina Arborea in Bangladesh written by Md. Siddiqur Rahman and published by . This book was released on 2015-06-03 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Research paper from the year 2015 in the subject Forestry / Forestry Economics, grade: 1, course: Forestry, language: English, abstract: Depending on which factors control spatial distribution of forest tree species, climate and edaphic are the two most scheming one those act together to locate tree species diversity. Species spatial arrangements determined by these two factors plotted in a Geographic Information System (GIS) showed relevance with what dendro-ecological studies marked for major forest tree species. As forest tree species has very close correlation with climate factors in their distribution and growth, methodological approach regarding using these two factors applied on a native tree species of Bangladesh: Gmelina arborea Roxb. Studied species is a promising one growing naturally in evergreen and deciduous forests of Bangladesh. Not only found in natural forests, it has been planted widely in all plantation sites throughout the country. Present study is to identify potential productive area of Gmelina arborea in Bangladesh considering climate and soil factors favourable to its growth. Geographic Information System (GIS) is a key tool to plot favourable plantation areas matching temperature, rainfall, soil types and topographic factors for the species studied. Results depicted that Gmelina arborea might grow well in Eastern part of the country especially in North-Eastern and South Eastern part of Bangladesh. This may be due to higher temperature and rainfall on that part and favourable sandy loam soil for the species there. These proposed potential plantation areas fall in tropical evergreen and semi-evergreen forest of the country, known to be its natural habitat. By this study it would be easier to identify Gmelina's distribution in forest ecosystems that may determine which silvicultural treatments are suitable for it to grow towards a normal growing stock.

Book Framing ecosystem based adaptation to climate change

Download or read book Framing ecosystem based adaptation to climate change written by Mokhlesur Rahman and published by IUCN. This book was released on 2014-01-01 with total page 55 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The recent increase in exposure to natural hazards among the communities of Bangladesh is linked to the new generation of threats posed by climate variability and change resulting from anthropogenic activity. Adaptation is not a new approach, but there are still a number of challenges inherent in adaptation and in building resilience to climate-induced threats. This documents emphasizes the adoption of ecosystem-based adaptation (EbA) to climate change: restoration, enhancement, conservation and wise use of natural resources with the engagement of local communities so as to enable natural ecosystems to function properly and deliver services, which in turns builds societal resilience to the impacts of climate change. This report describes six different types of EbA currently being practiced in the coastal zone of Bangladesh, and an analysis is made in line with the ecosystem services derived from such ecosystem-based interventions. Finally, the report suggests approaches for effective planning, design and implementation of EbA schemes aimed at building social-ecological resilience.

This book was released on 2017-01-12 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Unless action is taken now to make agriculture more sustainable, productive and resilient, climate change impacts will seriously compromise food production in countries and regions that are already highly food-insecure. The Paris Agreement, adopted in December 2015, represents a new beginning in the global effort to stabilize the climate before it is too late. It recognizes the importance of food security in the international response to climate change, as reflected by many countries prominent focus on the agriculture sector in their planned contributions to adaptation and mitigation. To help put those plans into action, this report identifies strategies, financing opportunities, and data and information needs. It also describes transformative policies and institutions that can overcome barriers to implementation. The State of Food and Agriculture is produced annually. Each edition contains an overview of the current global agricultural situation, as well as more in-depth coverage of a topical theme."
