This book was released on 2005 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Transverse momentum (PT) distributions for pions, kaons, protons and antiprotons have been measured near mid-rapidity for Au+Au collisions at sNN = 62.4 GeV using the PHOBOS detector at the Relativistic Heavy-Ion Collider (RHIC) in Brookhaven National Laboratory. Particle identification is performed using the PHOBOS Time-of-Flight plastic scintillator walls and specific energy loss in the multi-layer silicon Spectrometer, which is also used for track reconstruction and momentum-determination. The spectra are corrected for all detector-dependent effects, including feed-down from weak decays. At PT 3 GeV/c, protons are measured to be the dominant species of charged hadrons and scale much faster with respect to collision centrality than mesons. This behaviour at 62.4 GeV is found to be remarkably similar to that observed in Au+Au collisions at 200 GeV, an interesting observation which should serve as an important constraint on the various mechanisms which have been proposed to describe particle production over this PT range. Baryon stopping, the transport of baryon number from intial beam rapidity, is explored through the net proton (p - p) yields at mid-rapidity. These results fill a large gap between the SPS and higher RHIC energies and as such form an important set of data for comparing to models of baryon transport mechanisms.

This book was released on 2016-09-01 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis offers an excellent, comprehensive introduction to the physics of the quark–gluon plasma. It clearly explains the connection between theory and experiment, making the topic accessible to non-specialists in this field. The experimental work, which contributes significantly to our understanding of the quark–gluon plasma, is described in great detail. The results described in the final chapters of the thesis provide interesting new ideas about the connection between proton-proton and Pb-Pb collisions. Simone Schuchmann received the 'ALICE Thesis Award 2016' for this excellent work.

Book Charged Particle Transverse Momentum Spectra in Pp Collisions at Sqrt s

Download or read book Charged Particle Transverse Momentum Spectra in Pp Collisions at Sqrt s written by and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The charged particle transverse momentum (pT) spectra are presented for pp collisions at sqrt(s)=0.9 and 7 TeV. The data samples were collected with the CMS detector at the LHC and correspond to integrated luminosities of 231 inverse microbarns and 2.96 inverse picobarns, respectively. Calorimeter-based high-transverse-energy triggers are employed to enhance the statistical reach of the high-pT measurements. The results are compared with both leading-order QCD and with an empirical scaling of measurements at different collision energies using the scaling variable xT = 2 pT/sqrt(s) over the pT range up to 200 GeV/c. Using a combination of xT scaling and direct interpolation at fixed pT, a reference transverse momentum spectrum at sqrt(s)=2.76 TeV is constructed, which can be used for studying high-pT particle suppression in the dense QCD medium produced in heavy-ion collisions at that centre-of-mass energy.

Book excerpt: The pseudorapidity asymmetry and centrality dependence of charged hadron spectra in d+Au collisions at (square root)s{sub NN} = 200 GeV are presented. The charged particle density at mid-rapidity, its pseudorapidity asymmetry and centrality dependence are reasonably reproduced by a Multi-Phase Transport model, by HIJING, and by the latest calculations in a saturation model. Ratios of transverse momentum spectra between backward and forward pseudorapidity are above unity for p{sub T} below 5 GeV/c. The ratio of central to peripheral spectra in d+Au collisions shows enhancement at 2

Book Studies of High Transverse Momentum Phenomena in Heavy Ion Collisions Using the PHOBOS Detector

Download or read book Studies of High Transverse Momentum Phenomena in Heavy Ion Collisions Using the PHOBOS Detector written by Edward Allen Wenger and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 151 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The use of high-pT particles as calibrated probes has proven to be an effective tool for understanding the properties of the system produced in relativistic heavy ion collisions. In this thesis, two such measurements are presented using the PHOBOS detector at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC): 1. The transverse momentum spectra of charged particles produced near mid rapidity in Cu+Cu collisions with center-of-mass energies of 62.4 and 200 GeV per nucleon pair 2. Two-particle correlations with a high transverse momentum trigger particle (pT> 2.5 GeV=c) in Au+Au collisions at ... 200 GeV over the broad longitudinal acceptance of the PHOBOS detector ... In central Au+Au collisions at 200 GeV, the single-particle yields are suppressed at high-pT by a factor of about five compared to p+p collisions scaled by the number of binary collisions. This is typically understood to be a consequence of energy loss by high-pT partons in the dense QCD medium, as such a suppression is absent in d+Au collisions. In Cu+Cu collisions, the nuclear modification factor, RAA, has been measured relative to p+p data as a function of collision centrality. For the same number of participating nucleons (Npart), RAA is essentially the same for the Cu+Cu and Au+Au systems over the measured range of pT, in spite of the significantly different geometries. At high-pT, the similarity between the two systems can be described by simple, geometric models of parton energy loss. Two-particle angular correlations are a more powerful tool for examining how highpT jets lose energy and how the medium is modified by the deposited energy. In central Au+Au collisions, particle production correlated with a high-pT trigger is strongly modified compared to p+p. Not only is the away-side yield much broader in, the nearside peak of jet fragments now sits atop an unmistakable 'ridge' of correlated partners extending continuously and undiminished all the way to = 4.

Book Ups and Downs with a Bit of Strange

Download or read book Ups and Downs with a Bit of Strange written by Evan Warren Sangaline and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Experimental results from the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) Beam Energy Scan (BES) on identified particle spectra of [pi]+(−), K+(−), and p-(p) at mid-rapidity are presented. Au+Au collisions at center-of-mass energies of [squareroot]sNN=7.7, 11.5, 19.6, 27.0, 39.0, and 62.4 GeV are analyzed using data recorded by the Solenoidal Tracker at RHIC (STAR) detector. The resulting spectra are used to construct measurements of the nuclear modification factor R(CP), Bjorken energy density, and central event baryon enhancement as a function of collision energy. These measurements address the onset of deconfinement and help to bridge the gap between Super Proton Synchrotron (SPS) energies and top RHIC energy.

Book Particle Ratios at High Transverse Momentum in Pp Collisions At Sqrt S

Download or read book Particle Ratios at High Transverse Momentum in Pp Collisions At Sqrt S written by and published by . This book was released on 1983 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The production of identified charged particles in pp collisions at .sqrt.s = 63 GeV with an identified high p/sub T/ trigger particle emitted in the central region is studied. The measurements were performed at the CERN ISR using the Axial Field Spectrometer. Trigger particle ratios, sigma(.pi./sup + -/)/ sigma(all/sup + -/), sigma(K/sup + -/) and sigma(p/sup + -/)/sigma(all/sup + -/) are presented for p/sub T/ from 5 GeV/c to 8 GeV/c. In addition sigma(.pi./sup + -/)/sigma(all/sup + -/) is presented in the p/sub T/ region from 2.5 GeV/c to 4.5 GeV/c. The charge compensation in the hemisphere containing the trigger particle is shown to depend strongly on the identity of the trigger particle and on the identity of the associated particles. 13 references.

Book Study of Parton Energy Loss in Heavy Ion Collisions Using Charged Particle Spectra Measured with CMS

Download or read book Study of Parton Energy Loss in Heavy Ion Collisions Using Charged Particle Spectra Measured with CMS written by Austin A. Baty and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 245 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The phenomenology of the strong nuclear force is still not well understood at low momentum transfers and requires experimental input to constrain. Collisions of heavy ions at the Large Hadron Collider provide a unique opportunity to explore this kinematic region because they create a novel form of matter: the quark-gluon plasma (QGP). Using the CMS detector, spectra of charged particles originating from protonproton (pp), proton-lead (pPb), and lead-lead (PbPb) collisions at a center of mass energy per nucleon pair ( [square root of SNN) of 5.02 TeV are examined as a function of transverse momentum and centrality. Nuclear modification factors and fragmentation functions are constructed from these spectra. By comparing to pp collision reference spectra, a puzzle concerning previous measurements in pPb collisions is clarified. A strong suppression of particle production observed in PbPb collisions is also quantified. Finally, collisions of xenon nuclei are also studied to constrain the path length dependence of parton energy loss. The strength of energy loss is found to increase with both [square root of SNN and the average path length through the QGP. Comparisons to theoretical models and previous measurements indicate that the path length dependence is between linear and quadratic, as expected from a combination of collisional and radiative energy loss mechanisms.

Book From QCD based Hard scattering to Nonextensive Statistical Mechanical Descriptions of Transverse Momentum Spectra in High energy Pp and Pp u00AF Collisions

Download or read book From QCD based Hard scattering to Nonextensive Statistical Mechanical Descriptions of Transverse Momentum Spectra in High energy Pp and Pp u00AF Collisions written by and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Transverse spectra of both jets and hadrons obtained in high-energy $pp$ and $p\bar p $ collisions at central rapidity exhibit power-law behavior of $1/p_Tn̂$ at high $p_T$. The power index $n$ is 4-5 for jet production and is slightly greater for hadron production. Furthermore, the hadron spectra spanning over 14 orders of magnitude down to the lowest $p_T$ region in $pp$ collisions at LHC can be adequately described by a single nonextensive statistical mechanical distribution that is widely used in other branches of science. This suggests indirectly the dominance of the hard-scattering process over essentially the whole $p_T$ region at central rapidity in $pp$ collisions at LHC. We show here direct evidences of such a dominance of the hard-scattering process by investigating the power index of UA1 jet spectra over an extended $p_T$ region and the two-particle correlation data of the STAR and PHENIX Collaborations in high-energy $pp$ and $p \bar p$ collisions at central rapidity. We then study how the showering of the hard-scattering product partons alters the power index of the hadron spectra and leads to a hadron distribution that can be cast into a single-particle non-extensive statistical mechanical distribution. Lastly, because of such a connection, the non-extensive statistical mechanical distribution can be considered as a lowest-order approximation of the hard-scattering of partons followed by the subsequent process of parton showering that turns the jets into hadrons, in high energy $pp$ and $p\bar p$ collisions.
