Special focus is given to identification, prevention, and remediation techniques, and the book bridges the gap between research and application. It covers the fundamentals of cytology and morphology. There is a more practical section describing damage by viruses and bacteria on trees. The habitats of wood fungi are described as well as tree care. Important tree pathogens and wood decay fungi are characterized for prevention and identification. The final section focuses on the positive effects of wood-inhabiting microorganisms.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mycology, the study of fungi, originated as a subdiscipline of botany and was a des criptive discipline, largely neglected as an experimental science until the early years of this century. A seminal paper by Blakeslee in 1904 provided evidence for self incompatibility, termed "heterothallism", and stimulated interest in studies related to the control of sexual reproduction in fungi by mating-type specificities. Soon to follow was the demonstration that sexually reproducing fungi exhibit Mendelian inheritance and that it was possible to conduct formal genetic analysis with fungi. The names Burgetf, Kniep and Lindegren are all associated with this early period of fungal genet ics research. These studies and the discovery of penicillin by Fleming, who shared a Nobel Prize in 1945, provided further impetus for experimental research with fungi. Thus began a period of interest in mutation induction and analysis of mutants for biochemical traits. Such fundamental research, conducted largely with Neurospora crassa, led to the one gene: one enzyme hypothesis and to a second Nobel Prize for fungal research awarded to Beadle and Tatum in 1958. Fundamental research in biochemical genetics was extended to other fungi, especially to Saccharomyces cerevisiae, and by the mid-1960s fungal systems were much favored for studies in eukaryotic molecular biology and were soon able to compete with bacterial systems in the molecular arena.

Book Handbook of Industrial Mycology

Download or read book Handbook of Industrial Mycology written by Zhiqiang An and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2004-08-30 with total page 785 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Several excellent books have been published that address one or more aspects of the diverse field of industrial mycology, but none of them cover the entire process of fungal bioactive metabolites discovery. Until now. The Handbook of Industrial Mycology provides, in one volume, an overview of recent developments in industrial mycology with emphasis on the discovery of bioactive metabolites and, most importantly, their underlying biology and genetics. Two additional features distinguish this book from other books in the field: 1) most chapters are prepared using experimental data to illustrate theories and 2) the authors provide methodologies and experimental protocols in their chapters. Presenting a comprehensive overview of recent advances, the book provides a framework of basic methods, tools, and organizational principles for channeling fungal germplasm into the academic, pharmaceutical, and enzyme discovery laboratories. It covers the complex range of processes involved in the discovery, characterization, and profiling of bioactive fungal metabolites. The book includes examples of several recently marketed fungal metabolites and explores the impact of fungi on applications in the pharmaceutical, food and beverage, agricultural, and agrochemical industries.

Book The Sirex Woodwasp and its Fungal Symbiont

Download or read book The Sirex Woodwasp and its Fungal Symbiont written by Bernard Slippers and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-10-20 with total page 307 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Sirex woodwasp, Sirex noctilio, is the most important invasive alien insect pest of Pinus plantations in the Southern Hemisphere. It now also threatens pines in North America. This book brings together the worldwide knowledge of researchers from Universities and Government institutions, as well as forest industry practitioners that have worked on the pest. Importantly, it is the first comprehensive treatment of the subject since S. noctilio was discovered outside its native range around 1900. The book covers all aspects of the biology and management of S. noctilio, including aspects of the insects’ taxonomy, general life history, host-plant relationships, population dynamics, chemical ecology and symbiosis with the fungus Amylostereum areolatum. The book also contains a comprehensive synthesis of the history and current status of the pest and worldwide efforts to control it, including biological control, silviculture and quarantine.

Download or read book Resupinate Aphyllophorales of India written by M.H. Hakimi and published by Scientific Publishers. This book was released on 2013-07-01 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present book has great Mycological significance and will update the knowledge of Resupinate Aphyllophorales of Maharashtra, which presently lacks in the scenario of Indian Mycology. This book will be of immense help for further studies and investiga-tions. Taking into consideration the taxonomic study of Wood Rotting Fungi, this kind of approach is studied for the first time for understanding thoroughly the compilation of the Resupinate Aphyllophorales from a particular region. This book will facilitate further understanding of important pathogens from the vegetation of Maharashtra. The major work deals with the species studied from the family Corticiaceae with non-poroid hymenium; Polyporaceae and Hymenochaetaceae with poroid hymenium. Main aim is to provide an entry point for the students in to the World of Aphyllophorales. The book is supplemented with an index of genera, index of hosts/ substrata along with fungi recorded thereon and the list of references. Through this book readers are going to get a comprehensive guide of Resupinate Aphyllophorales. The present book would prove useful to Mycologist, Plant pathologists, Plant Biotechnologists and also to research students and teachers alike in the disciplines of Mycology and Plant Pathology.
