Book Cultural Competence of Senior Baccalaureate Nursing Students

Download or read book Cultural Competence of Senior Baccalaureate Nursing Students written by Silvia Imanda and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this descriptive study was to examine students' perceived confidence to provide culturally competent care. The literature showed a lack of empirical studies investigating the confidence of nurses and nursing students in providing culturally competent care. Therefore, the research question was, "What are Southwest Missouri senior baccalaureate student nurses' self-perceptions of their competence in providing cultural care for diverse ethnic clients?" A convenience sample of baccalaureate nursing students, enrolled during the fall 2009 semester, from two universities in Southwestern Missouri were recruited for this study. Students completed the Bernal and Froman's Cultural Self-efficacy Scale (CSES). This study found that the participants' self-perceived cultural knowledge, concepts, patterns, and transcultural nursing skills ranged between 3 (neutral) and 4 (moderate confidence) on the Likert scale 1 to 5. Based on the computed subscales of the CSES, the score of the total self-efficacy was 194.53, which means the participants rated themselves as neutral to moderately competent. The study found that there is a minimal increase in the self-perceived confidence levels of cultural competence compared to other studies in the Midwest.

Book Culture Counts

Download or read book Culture Counts written by Ariel Starr Tate and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As cultural diversity becomes increasingly significant in the field of nursing, so does its inclusion in accredited Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) and Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) programs. An analysis of one university's school of nursing program curriculum was conducted to measure the cultural awareness and competency of nursing students progressing through BSN and ADN accredited programs, using the Cultural Awareness Scale (CAS) survey and a qualitative survey. Results indicated BSN students and senior level students score higher on average compared to ADN students and junior level students respectively. However, low means overall and only 15% to 18% of participants stating they felt very prepared to provide culturally competent care suggested a lack of effectiveness and need for further investigation by the school of nursing to make necessary improvements in their cultural awareness and competency curriculum.

Book Cultural Awareness of BSN Students in a Southern California University

Download or read book Cultural Awareness of BSN Students in a Southern California University written by Susan Noreen Staub and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Background The purpose of this study is to formulate a better understanding of cultural awareness, and the importance knowledge of different cultures has for health care providers working with diverse patients. The objective of the research is to identify cultural awareness of health care providers so that knowledge of different cultures can have a positive effect on healthcare delivery. Definitions of cultural awareness by theorists will be discussed, and a literature review of multiple journal articles will continue to clarify the definition of cultural awareness. The results of previous research on cultural awareness will be reviewed. Leininger, a nurse, and innovator in the field of transcultural nursing, developed a culture-specific model of the theory that is and is proposed to guide this study. Research Question: "What is the level of cultural awareness among nursing students in a Southern California University?" Methods: The study design proposed is a quantitative, descriptive, cross-sectional design to assess the level of cultural awareness among senior-level nursing students. The cultural awareness scale (CAS) is a self-administered research instrument designed to measure cultural awareness in nursing students. The CAS will be the instrument used for this study along with a demographic questionnaire provided to the BSN students. The study will be conducted using paper and pencil during a traditional BSN senior-level course at a School of Nursing. Key Words: Cultural competency, cultural awareness, cultural diversity, cultural knowledge, transcultural, nursing care, nursing students.

Book Cultural Competency of Nursing Faculty Teaching in Baccalaureate Nursing Programs in the U S

Download or read book Cultural Competency of Nursing Faculty Teaching in Baccalaureate Nursing Programs in the U S written by Nadiah Baghdadi and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 141 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It has been decades since the concept of cultural competency was introduced in the literature, yet nursing faculty still show low levels of cultural competence. The purpose of this study was to assess the level of cultural competence among nursing faculty teaching in collegiate schools of nursing in the U.S. and to identify and examine demographic factors that are associated with the cultural competence level of nursing faculty. The study design was a descriptive, correlational, non-experimental survey design with a sample of nursing faculty (n=461) teaching in Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE) accredited baccalaureate nursing programs in the U.S. Data were collected using "Cultural Diversity Questionnaire for Nurse Educators Revised" CDQNE-R. The guided theoretical framework of this study was Campinha-Bacote's (2010) Process of Cultural Competence in the Delivery of Healthcare Services Model. Statistical analysis was done with SAS 9.3© (SAS Institute Inc., Cary, NC). The overall cultural competence (OCC) mean score for the study sample =166.3 ± 19.5 indicating that nursing faculty who teach at BSN programs across the U.S. have a moderate level of cultural competence. The highest indexes were for the Cultural Knowledge Subscale M= 43.53 ± 6.2, and the Cultural Teaching Behaviors Subscale M= 42.10 ± 4.98. The low indexes were for the Cultural Skills Subscale M= 31.53 ± 4.41, and the Cultural Encounter Subscale M =22.50 ± 4.42. Regression analysis found that selected demographic variables were predictive of OCC mean score. These variables included residing in a different country, language other than English, nursing specialty, highest degree attained, cultural continuing education, including cultural content in current nursing program, level of incorporating cultural content in current program, and assessing student needs and were significantly predictive of OCC mean score after adjusting for race, age group, and gender. The study also found that the transcultural teaching behaviors subscale was significantly associated with the OCC scale, adjusting for all other variables. The explained variance for the models ranged from 39% to 86%. Future studies are needed to identify factors that contribute to cultural competence from faculty and student perspectives; to identify the best-standardized evaluation tool to assess students' cultural competence levels; and to identify the best educational strategies to teach cultural competency in nursing education programs.

Book Culturally Competent Compassion

Download or read book Culturally Competent Compassion written by Irena Papadopoulos and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-04-17 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bringing together the crucially important topics of cultural competence and compassion for the first time, this book explores how to practise ‘culturally competent compassion’ in healthcare settings – that is, understanding the suffering of others and wanting to do something about it using culturally appropriate and acceptable caring interventions. This text first discusses the philosophical and religious roots of compassion before investigating notions of health, illness, culture and multicultural societies. Drawing this information together, it then introduces two invaluable frameworks for practice, one of cultural competence and one of culturally competent compassion, and applies them to care scenarios. Papadopoulos goes on to discuss: how nurses in different countries understand and provide compassion in practice; how students learn about compassion; how leaders can create and champion compassionate working environments; and how we can, and whether we should, measure compassion. Culturally Competent Compassion is essential reading for healthcare students and its combination of theoretical content and practice application provides a relevant and interesting learning experience. The innovative model for practice presented here will also be of interest to researchers exploring cultural competence and compassion in healthcare.

Book Cultural Competence

Download or read book Cultural Competence written by Erin N. Bradley and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 83 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The population in the United States is progressively taking on a new appearance. Cultural and racial groups are consistently experiencing dramatic increases in population status. International migrants are entering our borders in record numbers in hopes to build brighter futures for themselves and forthcoming generations. If current demographic trends continue, by the end of the 21st century, non-Hispanic Whites will no longer represent the mainstream population. In the midst of changes in our population come changes in the spectrum of health care consumers. Minority populations are known to experience higher rates of illness, disease, disability, and mortality. Considering these factors, it can be concluded that minority groups constitute a substantial percentage of health care patrons. Therefore, it is critical for all schools of nursing to focus on the topic of diversity throughout curricula. In order to graduate nursing students who are prepared to deliver culturally competent services in professional health care vocations, it is essential for educators to provide students with abundant opportunities in nursing programs to expand their knowledge and understanding of intercultural differences, strengthen intercultural abilities, and heighten their personal awareness of diverse cultures. For the purposes of this study, levels of self-reported cultural competence among sophomore, junior, and senior nursing students, as well as nursing faculty members at Kent State University at Stark College of Nursing (KSU-S CON) will be evaluated. Thus, the following research questions will be assessed: How effective do sophomore nursing students, junior nursing students, senior nursing students, and nursing faculty feel they are in delivering competent care to patients of diverse backgrounds? Furthermore, could the KSU-S CON improve the current educational nursing curricula by developing a more extensive domain devoted to transcultural nursing?

Book Perceived Cultural Competence Among Nursing Students

Download or read book Perceived Cultural Competence Among Nursing Students written by Tracy M. Allen and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 84 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Provision of culturally competent care has become an essential component of professional nursing practice. Using Campinha-Bacote's model of cultural competence, this descriptive study evaluates whether associate degree in njursing (ADN) students have higher levels of perceived cultural competence at the time of graduation (second-semester sophomores) than students in their first semester (freshmen). The Inventory for Assessing the Process of Cultural Competence among Healthcare Professionals - Revised (IAPCC-R) was used to collect self-reported data from participants attending a two-year ADN nursing program in southwestern North Carolina. IAPCC-R scores were significantly higher for sophomores than for freshmen. Analysis determined grade level as the primary factor influencing scores. This study helps expand the use of the IAPCC-R to the ADN population. [author abstract slightly modified].
