Book Identification of Ecologically and Biologically Significant Areas EBSAs in the Canadian Arctic

Download or read book Identification of Ecologically and Biologically Significant Areas EBSAs in the Canadian Arctic written by Jake C. Rice and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A national science advisory meeting was held June 14-17, 2011 at the Delta Hotel in Winnipeg. The primary objective of this peer-review meeting was to identify marine Ecologically and Biologically Significant Areas (EBSAs) in the Canadian Arctic using Fisheries and Oceans Canada EBSA Criteria. A primary working paper summarised the information from a large number of sources and provided the basis for the related science advice. In addition, meeting participants provided further supplementary information. Once the relevant Arctic EBSAs were identified, their national or global significance was determined. This Arctic EBSA exercise is part of Canada's ongoing commitment to building a national network of marine protected areas.

Download or read book Proceedings of the Regional Peer Review of the Re evaluation of Ecologically and Biologically Significant Areas EBSAs in the Eastern Arctic Biogeographic Region of the Canadian Arctic written by and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Proceedings of the regional peer review of the re-evaluation of Ecologically and Biologically Significant Areas (EBSAs) in the Eastern Arctic Biogeographic Region of the Canadian Arctic; January 27-29, 2015. [...] During the re-evaluation of the Beaufort Sea EBSAs, a description of the confidence (level of knowledge and source of data) for each of the features evaluated against the EBSA criteria was included to provide context. [...] On top of the shelf the water is colder and below, on the slope, the temperature increases. [...] The troughs are extensions of the fiords that allow the intrusion of warmer water offshore deep water from Baffin Bay or Davis Strait and change the composition of the communities that are there. [...] The boundaries of the Scott Inlet EBSA include the inlet and extend seaward along the trough edge to the shelf break.

Book Eco units and Potential Priority Conservation Areas in the Western Arctic Bioregion

Download or read book Eco units and Potential Priority Conservation Areas in the Western Arctic Bioregion written by and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 19 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The process to plan a network of marine protected areas in the Canadian Arctic was initiated in the Western Arctic Bioregion. A biogeographic classification system was developed to divide the Western Arctic Bioregion into types of habitats or ecosystems referred to as eco-units. The Bioregion was divided into 18 eco-units. Dominant ecosystem features, sea-ice data, bathymetric data, sills and water mass information were the primary inputs used to delineate the eco-units. The Western Arctic Bioregion currently contains 22 areas identified during previous science peer reviews as being ecologically and biologically significant.

Book Identifying and Comparing Important Areas for Marine Sustainable Use and Conservation

Download or read book Identifying and Comparing Important Areas for Marine Sustainable Use and Conservation written by Sofie Van Parijs and published by Frontiers Media SA. This book was released on 2024-05-24 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The ocean is under increasing threat from the expansion of human activities. The combined impacts of these threats as well as the potential impacts of climate change and ocean acidification have placed thousands of species at risk of extinction, and have impaired the structure, function, productivity and resilience of marine ecosystems. Currently, some parts of the world's oceans are significantly impacted, yet are without any form of effective management. Only a small proportion of the oceans are within protected area systems. Globally, measures are being taken to increase protection and sustainable management, but application is uncoordinated and not always effective. In order to support effective policy action by countries and competent international and regional organizations, it is critical to build a sound understanding of the most ecologically and biologically important ocean areas that support healthy marine ecosystems so that the necessary steps to ensure the long-term function and resilience of these systems can be taken.

Download or read book Arctic Marine Governance written by Elizabeth Tedsen and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-10-01 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Arctic region plays an important role in regulating the world’s climate and is also highly impacted by climate change, with average temperatures rising almost twice as fast as the rest of the world and sea ice melting much faster than previously predicted. These rapid changes will have significant impacts on human activity in the region and on the Arctic marine environment. This book draws on the results of the 2008-2009 Arctic TRANSFORM project, funded by the European Commission‘s Directorate General of External Relations, which engaged experts in a transatlantic discussion on the roles of the European Union and United States in light of the Arctic’s changing climate and political and legal complexities. . The book addresses the significant changes and developments in the marine Arctic, with descriptions and recommendations reflecting the current governance environment. A comprehensive overview of environmental governance and sustainable development in the Arctic is created. Chapters explore impacts and activities by sector, looking at fisheries, shipping, and offshore hydrocarbon in the Arctic, and at policy options and strategies for improving marine governance in the region. A particular focus is given to the roles of the European Union and United States and opportunities for cooperation to enhance Arctic environmental governance. .

Book Refinement of Information Relating to Ecologically and Biologically Significant Areas EBSAs Identified in the Newfoundland and Labrador NL Bioregion

Download or read book Refinement of Information Relating to Ecologically and Biologically Significant Areas EBSAs Identified in the Newfoundland and Labrador NL Bioregion written by and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Oceans Program in the NL Region sought identification and/or clarification of the particular sub areas for each EBSA identified in the NL Bioregion. [...] For both of these processes, the EBSAs were described with the inclusion of a corresponding map, however the data layers that were used to aid in the identification processes were not specifically requested, and in the case of the LOMA EBSAs, the subcomponents were not geospatially identified or described in detail. [...] This may be a reference to the general pattern that cod spend their summers on the shelf and then move to the edges along the slope in the winter. [...] With no reference to a particular area along the shelf, a note was included in the atlas to indicate the importance of the shelf edge for cod migration. [...] Initially the marine mammal spatial layer covered a section of the tail of the banks and the northeast shelf slope, but was modified to include the shelf edge connecting the two areas.
