Book excerpt: These Proceedings summarize the relevant discussions and key conclusions that resulted from the Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO), Canadian Science Advisory Secretariat (CSAS) Regional Peer Review meeting of February 11-12, 2015, at the Pacific Biological Station in Nanaimo, B.C. One working paper was presented for peer review on identifying Ecologically and Biologically Significant Areas (EBSAs) in the Offshore Pacific Bioregion. In-person and web-based participation included Fisheries and Oceans Canada staff from the Science Sector and Oceans Management plus external participants from First Nations, academia, Environment Canada, consultants, and non-governmental organizations. As part of Canada's commitment to identifying and protecting Ecologically and Biologically Significant Areas (EBSAs) within its territorial waters, an assessment of habitat features in the Offshore Pacific Bioregion was completed and reviewed. Six areas or features (hydrothermal vents, seamounts, the continental slope, abyssal/bathypelagic waters, and two pelagic/surface features) were assessed against eight EBSA criteria established by Fisheries and Oceans Canada and the Convention on Biological Diversity. Five EBSAs were identified by consensus based on the review of the working paper and associated EBSA criteria scores. The conclusions and advice resulting from this review will be provided in the form of a Science Advisory Report.

Book Reassessment of the Ecologically and Biologically Significant Areas EBSAs in the Pacific Northern Shelf Bioregion

Download or read book Reassessment of the Ecologically and Biologically Significant Areas EBSAs in the Pacific Northern Shelf Bioregion written by and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 22 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "DFO has developed guidance for the identification of Ecologically and Biologically Significant Areas (EBSAs), and has endorsed the scientific criteria used by the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) for identifying EBSAs. EBSAs in the Pacific Northern Shelf Bioregion (NSB) were identified in 2006 and peer reviewed in 2012. DFO Oceans Sector of the Ecosystems Management Branch has requested DFO Science to review previously identified EBSAs in the NSB using available biological data. The information arising from this Canadian Science Advisory Secretariat Regional Peer Review can be used to support the refinement of existing EBSA boundaries, and help to inform MPA network planning in the NSB, including the Pacific North Coast Integrated Management Area Plan"--Context, p. Book Identification of Ecologically and Biologically Significant Areas EBSAs in the Canadian Arctic

Download or read book Identification of Ecologically and Biologically Significant Areas EBSAs in the Canadian Arctic written by Jake C. Rice and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A national science advisory meeting was held June 14-17, 2011 at the Delta Hotel in Winnipeg. The primary objective of this peer-review meeting was to identify marine Ecologically and Biologically Significant Areas (EBSAs) in the Canadian Arctic using Fisheries and Oceans Canada EBSA Criteria. A primary working paper summarised the information from a large number of sources and provided the basis for the related science advice. In addition, meeting participants provided further supplementary information. Once the relevant Arctic EBSAs were identified, their national or global significance was determined. This Arctic EBSA exercise is part of Canada's ongoing commitment to building a national network of marine protected areas.

Book Refinement of Information Relating to Ecologically and Biologically Significant Areas EBSAs Identified in the Newfoundland and Labrador NL Bioregion

Download or read book Refinement of Information Relating to Ecologically and Biologically Significant Areas EBSAs Identified in the Newfoundland and Labrador NL Bioregion written by and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Oceans Program in the NL Region sought identification and/or clarification of the particular sub areas for each EBSA identified in the NL Bioregion. [...] For both of these processes, the EBSAs were described with the inclusion of a corresponding map, however the data layers that were used to aid in the identification processes were not specifically requested, and in the case of the LOMA EBSAs, the subcomponents were not geospatially identified or described in detail. [...] This may be a reference to the general pattern that cod spend their summers on the shelf and then move to the edges along the slope in the winter. [...] With no reference to a particular area along the shelf, a note was included in the atlas to indicate the importance of the shelf edge for cod migration. [...] Initially the marine mammal spatial layer covered a section of the tail of the banks and the northeast shelf slope, but was modified to include the shelf edge connecting the two areas.

Book Eco units and Potential Priority Conservation Areas in the Western Arctic Bioregion

Download or read book Eco units and Potential Priority Conservation Areas in the Western Arctic Bioregion written by and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 19 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The process to plan a network of marine protected areas in the Canadian Arctic was initiated in the Western Arctic Bioregion. A biogeographic classification system was developed to divide the Western Arctic Bioregion into types of habitats or ecosystems referred to as eco-units. The Bioregion was divided into 18 eco-units. Dominant ecosystem features, sea-ice data, bathymetric data, sills and water mass information were the primary inputs used to delineate the eco-units. The Western Arctic Bioregion currently contains 22 areas identified during previous science peer reviews as being ecologically and biologically significant.

Book Ecological Overview Summary for the Peel Sound Ecologically and Biologically Significant Area EBSA

Download or read book Ecological Overview Summary for the Peel Sound Ecologically and Biologically Significant Area EBSA written by Karen M Dunmall and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 79 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "In 2011, Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) identified Peel Sound as an Ecologically and Biologically Significant Area (Peel Sound EBSA) based on Narwhal use and, to a lesser extent, Beluga use. The EBSA provides valuable aggregation, rearing and (inferred) foraging habitat for the Somerset Island summering stock of the Baffin Bay Narwhal population and meets both the aggregation and fitness consequences criteria required by DFO for EBSA designation. The area is also utilized by a portion of the Eastern High Arctic-Baffin Bay Beluga population in summer. Although the Peel Sound EBSA is not well studied, this report includes a summary of available information, and identifies key habitat areas and knowledge gaps to provide an Ecosystem Overview for Peel Sound and surrounding area"--Abstract, p. vii.
